sometimes it goes like this and struggles, and sometimes it gets to 1000. sometimes it can only reach slower than this. its only happening when its got a load in

Try stretching the spring a little, also is the armature clean and unscratched? Watch the motor spin is there excessive arcing if there is the motor is worn!

Oh dear...

Evening,

Sorry to see your 9534 having a little trouble. I will give you my 2 cents.

1. Check all connections and ensure they are clean.
2. For now you can rule out the timer as this does not appear to be a problem related to it. If the timer was at fault here the spin bursts would be either lost altogether or jittery.
3. Check the brushes, to find out if they make contact, release them and if you feel a springiness in them when you push on them then they are making contact.
4. Clean and check the commutator, the part of the shaft that the brushes make contact with.
5. Module could be faulty, there are ones online for £15.

James.

thanks james

the thing the brushes go on make sense as when i wiggle the wires to the brushes.. it works.. kinda.
so glad the module is so cheap.

Motor

brummybear's profile picture
The commutator is the copper bit that the brush presses against it should be quite shiny it has slots in it the electricity transfers from the brush to the commutator causing it to spin.

It should be shiny and clean with no scratches, it can be cleaned with WD40 sprayed on a cloth and wiping it ( I don't recommend spraying the motor as some of the newer ones use nylon in the bearing as nylon and WD don't like each other)

Pull Gently on the brush and make shure its moving freely and springy..

Supermaticjames is right the control board my be on it's way out and are easy to find and cheep.

Re-fit the motor and run the machine with a lode in, when the motor goes into spin see if there's any arcing from where the brushes sitt againt the commutator. Id there is a LOTT of arcing then the motor needs replacing ( again EBAY quite cheeply)
Let us know how it goes.

Worn

brummybear's profile picture
That looks quite worn try cleaning it as described above but it may be time for a new or reconditioned motor. Make shure the brushes are seated properly. Dose the motor spinn freely when turned?

Post# 614680 , Reply# 21   8/4/2012 at 16:04 (4,281 days old) by boschlover1997 ()
yeah

yeah motor spins fine, although it does slow down quite quickly

Arcing

brummybear's profile picture
If the motor arcs badly when spinning its time to replace it, not replacing it my fry the control board too

Post# 614687 , Reply# 24   8/4/2012 at 16:16 (4,281 days old) by boschlover1997 ()
sure?

so your sure its the armature??

75%

brummybear's profile picture
Thats why refitting and watching it spin with a lode in ( not empty) some arcing is normal but a lot means buggerd armature.

okay whats the best website of getting them from?

Post# 614692 , Reply# 27   8/4/2012 at 16:31 (4,281 days old) by brummybear (Birmingham uk)
Ebay

brummybear's profile picture
Ebay is good, or espares ( Google it) But do refit first after cleaning and watch the motor.

Post# 614696 , Reply# 28   8/4/2012 at 16:43 (4,281 days old) by boschlover1997 ()

okay so i need to take the armature out and give it a clean? and then test it again?

Post# 614698 , Reply# 29   8/4/2012 at 16:50 (4,281 days old) by brummybear (Birmingham uk)
No.

brummybear's profile picture
No Just take a cloth if your fingers are small enough wipe the Copper bit through the hole that the brushes go. Use the shaft of a wooden spoon with a little WD40 on the cloth while turning the motor.

The refit and test

The commutator looks fine to me but you do need to see all round it in case there is a burnt spot or a copper strip poking up. There is a rare fault involving eddy currents which causes the motor to lose power. If that is the problem it will spin fine with the belt removed but slow down with any kind of load applied. If you do need a replacement armature you can use one from a later model such as a First Edition but you have to use your original tacho magnet (the round magnet screwed to the back end of the spindle).

eddy currents.

thats exactly as the fault is. without the belt on its fine, with the belt on and no load, it gets to 1000 slowly and with a load applied it barely gets past slow bosch speed.:)

Post# 614826 , Reply# 33   8/5/2012 at 06:33 (4,280 days old) by boschlover1997 ()

so how do i sort that one out then?

Post# 614834 , Reply# 34   8/5/2012 at 06:53 (4,280 days old) by hotpoint9534 (UK)
Armatures

Replacement armatures are still available for these GEC/GDA motors in the link below.
As a previous poster said, the commutator should be nice and shiny.

everybody, thanks so much for your help. it turns out it was the armature that needed a clean, ive cleaned this and now ive done a wash cycle in the machine and it worked fine. spin cycles are still a little slow but by slow i mean the 500rpm is about 400-450rpm and the 1000rpm final spin starts off at that and ends up at about 950rpm. i only know this because i can just hear it dropping slightly. but its good enough, everything comes out dry enough and it doesnt struggle very much at all.
thank you all so much really appreciate it.
cheers, george.
