So last month I bought my first Filter-Flo ever off of ebay. When it got here it was buyers remorse at it's best. None of what the seller said was true about it working and "tested", "A-1" condition.
Anyway, thanks to assistance from club members and needed parts sent to me courtesy of Yogitunes, I was able to finally get it going and posted some pics in an older thread. It was working and clean, but the cabinet is dented in the front.
then I came across this GE at a thrift store in Leesburg and got to thinking of doing a body swap and blend the two machines together. So I just got back with it this week and I have some pics to share.
This was one of two washers I went on my appliance picking trip to get.

When I got there the manager/owner dropped the price $50 after I told him I had driven in from out of town to get it.
If your ever in Leesburg, Florida, stop by 441 Thrift, very nice people.
Here's a picture of it unloaded and awaiting testing and detailing.

This washer has the back panel installed where the SpotScrubber did not. So I couldn't tell what other changes GE made in this last of the FLo's.
I will remove the back panel for further doner comparability between the two. It's a strong runner with a VERY aggressive agitation. Even though it's a BOL, It's a shame to tear it apart.

I noticed the back panel is just simple pressed cardboard and I've only seen these in 2 conditions, destroyed and water logged. They are also 'Hella' expensive! So I decided to at least coat it with something to prolong the day it needs replaced or I take it off completely.
The only real reason to keep the cover on is for noise reduction and to keep the critters of the 4 and 8 legged variety out of the internals.

...I test fitted the Filter-Flo pan from the SpotScrubber and it fits on the agitator of the newer washer. I understand that the SpotScrubber filter pan is a little larger in diameter, but it fit just the same. I now "need" a standard Filter-Flo pan since it didn't come with one.
Here is an example of the type of cycle lights I wanted to custom add to the washer to indicate water temps and "SpotScrubber" activity.
They are from a Commercial Speed Queen.

I had this 90% full can of spray paint laying around for over 10 years and decided it was finally the day to use it.
I remember that when I had used it prior, the spray valve was defective, causing the paint to build up at the tip and then get spit in a goober-like fashion, ruining any smooth finish you were trying to create. So in this case I used that "defect" to a creative advantage. After all, I was just painting a piece of cardboard.
Here is the panel painted and re installed.

**Question** Why did GE use so many colors of plastic? I wish I had all the plastic in that SEAFOAM green (bleach dispenser, clothes retaining ring, fabric softener dispenser, Etc).
The SpotScrubber has beige, white and seafoam plastic pieces! Look like a pride parade in there.!!

that in this last incarnation the control panel doesn't say "Filter-Flo" anywhere.

Very beautiful machine and you did good leaving it intact. Great job on the painting of the rear panel too. I like your idea of preservation.

Enjoy!

Lovely machine and great to see the insides and all explained, the hoses are in the same position as our Hotpoint models, and very similar parts as well as the cardboard back panel, the spooky thing is the paint you used on the rear panel is the same colourway as the official UK Hotpoint Filter-Flow 1970`s models!!

You would be better off to modify the existing wash tub to fit on the old transmission hub, because among other things the old hub also holds down the oil seal.

Here is a link I used when I had issues with oil leak and worn oil seal, this link is of a canadian beaumark washer which internal is the exact thing of a Filter-flo as it was made by them.....
You can easlily understand once basket is removed that you cannot easily fit the stainless basket in those 3 shaft things that hold it with the 3 bolts.....
Why change it then?

Well, the speeds (guessing that your one is a 1 speed cluch) and all other functions except for the auto-extra rinse will not work in your model, but if you would like to have a new chromed and black console you may change it, I think you could do that, is all about wiring.....
Not sure if you will have the need to adapt or change anything else then.....

Alex

if its just the chrome ends you want changed, that only takes a few minutes.....

you can change over the whole panel, but for now, you won't have two speeds until you install a two speed clutch, and the activation solenoid......easily done

and of course, the water level may have to be adjusted, since the new panel comes from an ExLarge machine, and yours is a standard capacity, but again, easily done...

worth a shot!

Yes, I have a once speed clutch. And as Yogi's keen eye pointed out to me, this machine is of the standard capacity and would involve a more significant parts changeover from the original XL capacity SpotScrubber.
It is all cherry inside and out and would be a shame to tear it apart. But if I did keep it the panel would have to go to make it more visually appealing to me.

Back when i worked for GE around 1980 the appliances had a shot of green spray paint on the back.  Someone told me they called that the "green dot of dependability".  I don't see it on these newer machines.

I may be wrong....but that 2 speed conversion that your showing Alex is not for a traditional GE filterflo......hate to see you spend money for something thats not gonna fit/work......

use your SpotScrubber as a comparison of what the 2 speed clutch and solenoid should look like....

Wasn't sure if that kit was compatible, but I figured someone here would tell me :).
Thanks Yogi for sending me that care package. Thanks to you I now have the correct Filter-Flo pan for this washer. It's a smaller diameter than the Spotscrubber mini basket pan, so you can see more of that extreme rollover action!

**Alert, the seller agreed to my "make offer" price of $20 and I am the official new owner of the 8-Cycle control panel in sexy black. So I gain a few extras built into the timer that aren't activated by additional switches. Kinda cool, like the Auto 2nd rinse in the "extra clean" cycle. Can't wait to try it on.

Now, what do I need to convert it over to a 2-speed?

Sorry that you didn't hear from that guy, I just suggested you as I remebered of it..... but try to wait a little bit, maybe he is on vacation, you know it's August.....
Anyway that square shaped console is nice also! Not sure if the square one can fit on these models...it will? It's very nice as well!
I'm happy you got that 2 Speed motor also and for that good price.
Wished it was so easy to find one for me but 220 volt 50hz to change on my one, as my clutch has gone and now run on 1 speed only, sincerely it is one thing I'm feared to mess with....you know it would be best to find a new motor+clutch+solenoid already mounted, I can't go wrong with it.
Martin once tried to explain me how to do to replace the clutch, but I'm concerned to do a mess with and anyway would need a new solenoid also, as it is not in that good shape , it suffered alot the oil leak from the lower seal 2 years ago.....
Getting in Italy a new motor assembly that runs at 220 volt is such an ardous task as GE dealers now only have parts for the new models...I may try to go with Latin America parts shop where they have 220 volt but who knows what I will get then?
Actually I think the transmission will also fail in the next years, it ran alot and of course can't last forever, it just had a lower shaft seal failure so I'm expecting the next one ìwill be into the tub, not to mention a gear failure, I do not even want to think of it, finger crossed, but that will happend sooner or later and already know that will be a great mess...
Will try to keep her alive till I can....
I'm talking too much... :D
Congrats and good luck!

keep in mind.....this 2 n 1 agitator fits the largest capacity tub, but uses the small capacity tranny....

I have placed this in a standard capacity machine, the lid will close.....and for a one speed machine, it now offers a gentle agitation.....

thinking about it are we?

What year did GE washers first stopped agitating with the lid open? Back in the 70s, I had neighbors with a c.1969 GE (the first filter-flo I ever saw!) that continued agitating with the lid open.

GE Mulit Speed Clutches

combo52's profile picture

Alex the solenoid you pictured was a very rare one that was only used on the three and four speed clutches. These 3&4 SP clutches used two of these solenoids, this solenoid will not work for the much more popular two SP clutch you have. It is amazing to even see one of these rare solenoids. I recently sold a 3 SP GE washer to GE extra-rince[ Matthew ] maybe he needs this, but I have never seen a bad one.

You know, that's one thing I really liked are those chrome ring knobs from newer GE washers. They make the washer look a lot more expensive than it is.

Those knobs also suffer from yellowing as well.. but at least they're newer.

Luckily these have not. The newer knobs are from our 7-year old washer which is in a laundry room without windows. If we had had a window in there I'm sure they would too have yellowed like you said.
I wanted to try them on for size. They fit perfectly, including the timer knob. It would be a swell upgrade to give the beige and white facade a little bling factor with the chrome rings, but I'm a sucker for black-n-chrome, and going to switch out the console as I mentioned above.
But still, my how the mighty have fallen. GE used to have some real lookers for their laundry equipment back in the day and I often wonder what happened to the magic?
Then I saw this book and read the synopsis, it explained all.
Looks like good reading.

"With convincing passion and meticulous research, Thomas F. O'Boyle explores the forces behind General Electric's rise to the top of Wall Street, questioning if GE, with chief executive officer Jack Welch at the helm, is still "bringing good things to life." Welch--explosive, profit-hungry, and pragmatic--catapulted GE's stocks to the top, up 1,155 percent from 1982 to 1997. O'Boyle argues that these astounding results have come only with the heavy price of employees' lives, blighted under the tyranny of "Neutron Jack" Welch, so named for his bomb-like ability to eliminate staff without disturbing surrounding operations. During Welch's reign, hard-nosed success tactics--unblinking downsizing, ruthless acquisition negotiations, and the virtual abandonment of manufacturing in favor of the more glamorous entertainment and financial services industries--coexist with scandals like price-fixing, pollution, and defense contract fraud. Sure to spark controversy, this gripping, comprehensive account begs the greater question: Is Jack Welch's GE a model company for business in the next century, or is it time to change the way the world does business?

"Smoothly written and thoroughly researched." --USA Today

"This book makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of corporate America. . . . Thomas F. O'Boyle persuades you that GE--Jack Welch's GE--brings bad things to life. In abundance." --Washington Monthly

The GE Filter-Flo was a testament to decent North American Engineering.

IMHO, it seemed to me that this platform kind of peaked in the late 1960's with the development of the Versatronic system. It wasn't the best engineering, but it was really cutting edge at the time and there was nothing quite like it.

Then everything just kind plateaued and nothing happened until the early 1990's when they finally decided to abandon the platform and design everything from scratch. You could certainly tell though that they wanted to cut corners and make everything cheaper to manufacture.

The new platform did have the advantage of larger tubs, indented tubs for greater surface area, Microprocessor control.. but they went to a 30 degree agitator stroke, plastic gears and lots of generally inferior engineering in general.

Then they thought up the Hydrowave system, which in theory wasn't a bad idea per say... A high voltage DC controlled servo, no transmission and the mode selector technology. (Of which, unfortunately, it was flawed. Mode selectors would burn out and get stuck into the spin mode, oddly enough. Probably a good thing that they stuck in this mode, rather than getting stuck in agitation mode. An agitator spinning at 600 RPM wouldn't really do good things to clothing.)

I think if anything, GE would benefit considerably if they brought the Filter-Flo technology back using modern electronics and technology. It would also take a good marketing effort too, to give people an incentive to buy it.

Heck, if they are adverse to the idea of using a filter pan, they could always use the rimflow technology instead... But personally, I like filter pans better.

I wish you the best of luck in building your frankenmachine...

I think it would be quite an endeavor for the forum members to develop "The Ultimate Filter-Flo" machine.. This would be far beyond my mechanical capabilities, but I certainly have a few good ideas!

Post# 618503 , Reply# 92   8/19/2012 at 21:19 (4,260 days old) by qualin (Canada)

Which makes me wonder about something... How well would a heavily modified Hydrowave system work with Filter-Flo technology?

The agitator on a Hydrowave machine spins 360 degrees, which is kind of a strange reversal from the 90 degree stroke on a Filter-Flo, then down to the 30 degree stroke on their more modern platforms..

Would it work better with a ramp style agitator instead of a fin-type?

I do have to admit how much machining would have to be done to make everything "fit".

It almost makes me wish I had enough knowledge to build a custom one-off.

** Something related I posted in another thread regarding modified GE Filtewr-Flo**
I have an extra Stainless steel basket from a newer GE I thought of having modified to fit the Filter-Flo. The newer tub uses a mounting hub and it is that hub that would need to be drilled to accept the filter flo tub mount.
I spoke to a welder about possibly welding something together and he was afraid the Newer tub hub was made of "pot" metal and would not stand up to any temperatures welding would create. :(
He also mentioned it would be very hard to get everything "hubcentric" to eliminate any balancing issues. Not to big a deal for washing, but not ideal when spinning.

** continued **
It would be easy to modify a drain pump from any washer or dish washer to act as a re circulation pump, the rub would be in creating an opening deep enough into the outer tub to provide for pickup and prevent cavitation. It would also be very noisy since it would have to run constantly during the wash cycle, sometimes as long as 14 minutes?
And I would also have to create some kind of balance ring as I don't think the upper stainless steel tub would be able to resist deformation during a high spin without some kind of bracing.

Someone posted a picture of a GE Versatronic set selling for $10 in another thread. It seems to me like the two most desired machines are:

- The 1958 GE Filter-Flo (First year of it.)
- The 1968 GE Versatronic Filter-Flo
- The 1973 GE Dispensall Filter-Flo
- The 1994 GE Filter-Flo. (Last year of it. Non-Rim Flo model)

Can you guys/gals think of any other Filter-Flo machines made by GE which are collectors must haves? (Maybe showcasing some unique feature)

GE FF Washers

combo52's profile picture

First year in the states was 1956.

You would be very lucky if you find a Versatronic that works, I have never seen one, it wasn't a very durable clutch design and actually NO GE two speed, three speed and four speed clutch was very durable if you used the lower speeds much as it slipped constantly. It is like having manual transmission car and driving with your left foot resting on the clutch petal. Occasionally I would find a customer with a GE washer that only used the low speed settings and if they did much laundry the clutch would only last a 1/2 dozen years at best.

The Dispensall feature was unique but offered no functional advantage over the models before it that had the timed bleach and fabric softener dispersers neatly built into the washers top and it was messier and more troublesome.

The last GE FF spot scrubber was a pretty neat washer and is diffidently a good performer and all the above washers are worth collecting for the unique rareness.

Since we had hurricane Issac giving us rainy weather and i was stuck inside, I decided to try and switch out the Filter-Flo consoles. I wired everything up except the speed selector switch since I don't have provisions for that in my original wiring harness and fired her up. The machine began to fill and I was all smitten until the water kicked off and the lights dimmed. I heard a click and lights came back on. Figured the timer might be stuck so i gave it a whirl and selected a higher water level and started again. Same thing happened. So I next tried reattaching my old water level and temp switches and only hooked up the timer. Again, lights dim and nothing but a click. So I just reattached my original console and verified everything worked. May have something to do with the colors of the multi-plug to the motors. Some are Green (like mine), others are red or white. Will have to experiment when I have that 2-speed clutch and relay handy.

There is likely a problem with the connections for the motor, GE used so many different wire color combinations that I have found that the only to substitute motors on GE FFs [ unless you have the exact motor ] is compare both machines wiring diagrams and make the connections as required.

I also experimented with adding the mini-basket to the standard capacity washer and the tub is too shallow for it to work properly. The basket barely fits on the agitator and is only stable when you add the filter pan. At that point the water flow barely makes it over the rim to the basket.

I've been busy lately and have neglected to run my Spotscrubber Filter-Flo for a few weeks and decided it was time to take her out for a spin. I had been having some load balancing issues due to missing and worn out rubber pads on the washer feet. Thankfully, yogitunes heard my cries for help, like princessLeia looking for Obi Wan, and sent me a few replacements.
As you can see from the photo, the older pad I had looked like Gandhi's flip flop and had seen better days. (on the right)

...After the feet were replaced. I then carefully leveled the machine, side to side and front to back. Success! Ran a few loads and the washer ran like a champ. No more balance issues and the washer doesn't wobble, looking like it's a drunken hula girl at a Hawaiian luau.

Ebay: Genuine GE WH41X113 Washer Recirc Hose NEW in Package
For some odd reason the seller has it listed under "building supplies/tubing" category instead of laundry parts, go figure.
He's got it on sale from $49.99, marked down to $42.99 + 2.99 shipping.
I posted a link to it. Let me know if it doesn't work.

Jetcone,
What's sudden interest in the Filter-Flo hose? It's woefully overpriced and there are less expensive replacements. Is there an advantage to this "all in one" design? I prefer the white "Never kink" corrugated hoses since you can somewhat see through them and can keep an eye on any bacterial growth.

Once I had gotten the SpotScubber leveled out I got into the habit of letting the cycle complete without watching over it. Well, the other night I just happened to come out to find the washer in the final spin and this loud repetitive clicking/clacking noise coming from the washer that sounded remotely like the speed shift engagement of the solenoid and clutch. So I shut the washer off and restarted it, only to have the same noise return. Go to the back of the machine and find this tiny weeping leak coming from the area of where the drain hose attaches to the water pump. The water ran down the motor yoke, up and over the wiring harness and thru the connector leading to the clutch solenoid. Possibly shorting it out. I then turned my attention to the "never kink" PVC drain hose and found it was splitting apart at the seam. These hoses are tuff new, but get hella brittle as they age and one day just split. OK, So I'll be replacing it with a new hose, but that brings me back to the clutch/solenoid problem. Now my washer is stuck on "gentle" spin/agitate.

Who's the Genius at GE that decided it was a good idea to line up the washer drain pump outlet over the main motor wiring harness connection? You would have though that UL would have pointed that out to them.

.. A bright and shiny newer motor/clutch and relay assembly is a sight to behold though, might have to just break-down and buy one, even if it costs almost as much a whole machine on the used market.
Not sure if the green connector is going to make any difference to the red one on the original, they are both equipped with 2-speed clutches. Maybe related to horsepower? 1/3, 1/2 or 1/4?

I take it that the water leak killed the motor......

you can get a new one like this, or hold out for a while and see if another machine turns up, maybe with a rust issue or something, and have a decent motor/clutch you can use......

Just a thought, If the solenoid was energized in error due to the leak, maybe the cam/actuatort arm might be bent out of position? Something I have to look into once I replace the "no kink" drain hose.

I was gonna say.....with the solenoid unplugged.....you should get high speed all the time.....that arm might be stuck causing slow speed......otherwise, the clutch most likely can't be stuck in low gear....

The machine always started out in slow agitation regardless of cycle. Just about when the tub locks into place, it changes into normal agitation. I disconnected the solenoid with no change. The assembly is pretty gunked up, and I can definitely smell the distinct odor of old gear oil when she's in a spin and that motor coupler is blowing air out of the cabinet. Maybe it's bound, a broken return spring?
I found this kit online for a new complete motor, belt, clutch and relay to put on my wish list if I wanted to take the easy way out, but that's not how we do it here on AW.O!
One thing that I need answered is regarding this warning label included with the kit.
Does this make buying a used motor an act in futility if it doesn't come with it's previous relay?

** I got my normal/fast speed back! **
It seems that little actuator arm for the speed solenoid was bent. Even though the relay wasn't energized, the arm would not drop down far enough and still made enough contact to keep the clutch engaged, hence the continuous gentle/slow speed.
GE did not make it easy to fix either, unless you want to tilt the machiene forward, the relay is not only hard to see, but also to get at. I had to get my brightest LED lamp jammed into the motor yoke just to get enough light in there to work on it. There are 2 peep holes on the side of the yoke, but move your head and you loose sight of it. Very frustrating. I was finally able to bent it back a bit to free the clutch cam and Ba-bamm, I'm back in Biz!
I have not tried to reengage gentle mode until I am ready to repair the actuator arm. Right now I have to divert my attention to repairing my Neptune bearings, at least I don't have to replace any major part$!

Tonight I replaced the split drain hose with a spare hose I had for a Whirlpool Duet, connected the speed solenoid back up, and started the machine.
Filled, started to agitate in gentle as normal, and then, click, back into fast agitate/spin for the rest of the cycle.
So it appears the speed solenoid and actuator arm are working properly.

I decided to run another test load, this time with the Permanent Press cycle. It consists of Gentle agitation and fast spins with the extra rinse. The speed solenoid would be getting quite a workout here. Machine performed flawlessly, no issues. Seems these old GE's are tough and hard to kill. Rust-through is probably what sends these out to pasture versus outright mechanical failure.

GE Filter Flow Washers

combo52's profile picture

A few notes.

GE 2SP clutch washers always start on low speed when set for Hi SP, they will shift to high as the clutches carrier plate comes up to speed from the friction in the carrier plate bearing, this can take as little as a few seconds to more than 30 seconds, this is completely normal.

The motor start relay should be replaced when replacing the motor if the old motor  had an electrical failure or if the motor being installed is not the exact motor that was originally on the washer. It should also always be used if it comes packed with the replacement motor.

You can not use the Mini-Basket or agitator mounted lint filter on the two piece HP style agitators, these first two features were exclusive GE features and the two piece agitator was given only to HP and its derivatives like Penn-Crest.

I am at a crossroads, I have to decide weather to combine the best of the best or not, that is the question. I would be happy with having just one Filter-Flo. I would more than likely just sell the rest of what's left over, since some parts aren't quite interchangeable if I want to remain true to the way the machines are labeled. Such as Large and extra-large capacity. Being able to fit the special Spot Scrubber Mini-wash basket, filter pan, fabric softener disp and be able to close the lid. You can't do that with the shallower Large capacity wash tub, not even with the smaller mini-basket. Sounds like I just made up my mind.

Actually, that isn't my listing. Good deal though if you don't have to have it shipped, as the whole assembly is bulky and heavy.
My Filter-Flo chapter only began a few months ago, so I haven't had time to accumulate too many duplicates. And like you said, these birds aren't as rare as the models featured in some of the POD advertisements. I think one fully functioning Flo is gonna have to do. They way I figure it, It would cost more to have the dents/rust fixed and the cabinet repainted, than to body snatch the white cabinet.

Having both versions around has been very helpful. Seeing what makes them different was a good learning tool and that is priceless. Now, the next time I come across one for sale I'll know what to look for. Which is a great negotiating tool.
So watch this space, I sense change a'cummin.

Don't tell anybody, but there is this older creamy, beige Maytag pair for sale locally that are soo cheery and selling for the low, so I might have to quickly make room should they just suddenly appear at the entrance to my driveway. Robert has always run a tight ship, so I'm sure we aren't going by way of the Sumerians anytime soon. Although, the Mayans do say to keep your calendar free after Dec,22,2012. Jus sayn.

Keeping up

I watched in mesmerizing daze, an orbital trans demo shown in a tour of old washers, youtube. It's interesting how the motor shaft is translated to achieve the back and forth motion(the "force" was with the inventor that day).

Hope you kept that first GE FF - just LOVE that model. Older washers/dryers r so much more spirited...etc.

Recommendation of the day: don't get pinched, it has repercussions.

That last 1964 Filter-Flo graphic was rare and wonderful. Have never seen its like before and once again I am reminded that I missed a great and enjoyable career by being born 20 years too late. Oh well.

I wanted to add this reply I left in another thread related to diagnosing speed actuator issues.

"keepitclean, Having just gone through what you are describing. I'll give you a few things to check to verify the position of your clutch during operation.

**The GE workshop manual specifically states DO NOT switch speeds with the motor engaged**

1) All muti-speed GE flo's start out in gentle, then switch to regular agitate.
2) If your machine starts out in regular fast or won't engage gentle, your solenoid is not getting power or jammed. The default speed is regular if there isn't any interaction from the actuator arm.
3) This last one is the hardest. Get a very bright flashlight and verify the position of the speed actuator arm. If it's down and not making any contact with the clutch cams, you should have normal/fast. If it's in the up position with it's paw holding one of the 2 clutch cams, you're in gentle. If you have it switched to Normal/fast and the cam is still up, you either have a short in the wiring keeping the solenoid energized or the cam arm is sticky/bent to far upwards and isn't comming down low enough to clear the spinning clutch cams. (Which was what happened to me when a leak energized the actuator during the wrong time, bending the arm, I took a long screwdriver and rebent the arm back down to clear the clutch cams and restarted the machine with normal back in biz."

I was out in the lab with my Filter-Flo and decided to run a small enough load to warrant use of the mini-basket.  Although this washer doesn't have a "mini-wash" setting, I just set it on the low water level setting.

Well, after a few minutes of washing I lifted the lid and was surprised at what I saw. My first Suds Cake!

I came across this today searching the internet for GE washer parts.

I didn't know GE had made appliances for JCPenny's. I thought that they were all Norge based?

Here's a picture for the record. Interesting color too.

I believe JC Penney sold rebadged Hotpoint washers, and after a certain year (late 1970s?) Hotpoint washers switched to the GE design.

I noticed that the JCPenny's dryer has an extra lower fascia where a STD capacity GE dryer would have an open toe-kick.  That addition is something GE should have done on their own dryers once they did away with the foot pedal opener.

It would blend better with the companion washer of the time.

Such as in this picture from the Archives.

What this shows is how versatile the Filter-Flo chassis really is and how clever GE was/is in getting the most models out there using the same tooling and factories.  What this means for us is that you can literally build your own custom "couture"  Filter-Flo washer from all the available parts.  Standard or large capacity, mini basket, filter-flo/rim-flo, 1-speed/2-speed or more. Side opening lid/back opening lid. Suds saver, lighted console. 6"/7" tall console, chrome/mono-chromatic finish, etc.  Truly customized to your taste and budget!

And you can do all of that to the companion dryer, so you'll always have the option of a "matched set".

technolpolis - It's a good thing you don't have a warehouse, like some of the aw.org members do, you might end up with a museum, full of ads and graphic signs, memorabilia...centering around Maytag. The Madison, GA Bubblecar museum, we recently visited, reminded me of those who have huge w&D collections, among other appliances. Your graphics are entertaining, as usual - that one with Interstate 30 - thought of Route 66 that I was lucky to use, before the freeway replaced it completely.

These little lid bumpers are keen to getting the lid to close quietly and prevent rust inducing metal-to metal contact. Also protects the paint from wearing away. I got a few extra to keep on hand since many of the Filter-Flo's I've come across no longer have them.

PLEASE!
Can anyone help me find GE Part# WH8X250 (the small tube for a GE SpotScrubber washer) for less than $100? Without this, it's just a run of the mill Filter-Flo.

Post# 647272 , Reply# 244   12/18/2012 at 02:14 (4,140 days old) by applianceguy47 ()

I don't know what that does.  I assume its a valve to stop the flow.

My parents had the 1985 SpotScrubber washer in almond.

The main difference between this, and any other FF was a valve to stop the flow of water from the recirculating spout.  So the minibasket would fill with only enough water AND all the detergent, and that would keep the soapiest water in the minibasket and hence be deeper cleaning.   blah-blah.

And your right, other than that valve it is basically the same as any other FF washer.

Still just as fun, though.  The Filter flo is tops for action.

Alex....let's go outside the box for a minute.....

how badly damaged is the rubber insert of your valve unit.....is it possible to re-line the inside with something like a tube of rubber from a bicycle tire innertube?.....

it would slide inside, using rubber cement to secure in place, and trim any excess.....

I also wonder how far off, if a pinch valve rubber insert from a Hoover TwinTub would work?

just a few thoughts.....

Pinch valve

akronman's profile picture

Hey Tecnopolis------your valve looks like an exact single valve model of my dual exit valve suds model. I just got parts from Easy Appliance, they are disontinued, No Longer Available, and still in stock.

Attached is the diagram of my suds valve, you'll see it's just a dual port version of yours. Link is for part #926 from the diagram. I simply needed 2 of the 4 springs for it, it still was rough as hell, then I got some white lithium greases inside along those metal slides and in those rectangular grooves in the case, it's perfect now. Try that for yours once the leaky valve is replaced.

What exactly does your single port valve do, as the "SPotscrubber" function?

Also, this thread takes forever to load, could you start Filter Flo Nation #2?

And Martin----my indexing is MINOR, and doesn't index with no clothes. I will keep an eye on it, not much else for now. Other than that, a wonderfully functioning machine here.

Yogi, Yes I have thought of the bicycle inner tube as a sleeve fix for the tube repair, but wanted to make sure I exhausted my options on finding an OEM solution before I went the MacGyver route.
As it turns out, I just ordered a complete used pinch valve assembly with a good hose for $75. Not exactly cheap, but a lot less than the $126 I've been quoted for the hose alone. It comes with a 90 day warranty. Hopefully this will get my machine back to factory specs and operation. I Can't have knobs and cycles that don't work.
If your like me (and I know you are), the little things seem to bother me just as much as the larger things. Case in point, the missing lid bumpers. Ya, not exactly something that would stop me from being able to use the machine, but it sure did feel better once I got and installed them. It was like Christmas morning. Sometimes that level of attention to detail can derail me, but I see it more of a gift as apposed to a curse.

Akronman, The SpotScrubber cycle is nothing more than an automatic feature to temporary halt the filter flo stream into the special SpotScrubber mini basket once it is filled. The mini basket does not have the typical drain holes located in the bottom which allows the concentrated water and detergent mixture time to work on heavy soil. After a few minutes the valve releases allowing the flow to resume. Once the flow restarts, the detergent mixture is allowed to overflow out the top ports into the wash tub. It's not something I feel I would use all the time, but since it says "SpotScrubber" prominantly on the machine face, I thought it odd not to have the feature working. The SpotScrubber is also featured on the cover of the GE appliance brochure I had as a top of the line model, so I thought it would be something to preserve since it's not as common as an everyday Filter Flo's we typically see.

The old and new solenoids side by side. Overall they are both pretty clean for being as old as they are,(newer one is on the left).

A shot of the new hose nested inside the solenoid. It's fairly thick rubber. Note the beefed up section where the scissor-like "pinch" action takes place.

Looking through the assembly, you can see the "half-moon" shaped area that closes off the water flow when the solenoid is activated.

While I was waiting for the hoses to dry. I happened upon these brand new shiny tub bolts. Although I only needed 6 (one set for both of my Filter'Flo's), they come in a pack of 12 complete with washers. So let me know if you need a set and we can work something out.

I also broke down and ordered this new upper trim piece for the SpotScrubber console.

The washer had been delivered with the creased control panel trim cap. The gentleman who delivered it thought he was doing me a favor by strapping the washer down by running a cable over the top of it down to the pallet it was riding on. All it did was put this crease in it. It was pretty hard to find a new one to replace it, and when I did it was pretty expensive to boot.

Old and new, side by side. Probably not something the average washer user would care about, but we're not the average washer users here on AW.O.

Like nails dragging on a chalk board, this bothered me to no end. Chinese water torture would have been preferable to staring at this every time I did a load!
I did save the old piece just in case I found another washer that might have had a piece in worse or missing condition. Luckily the front of it was still in decent condition.

Pristine GE FF

Is it just me or are some of the pics showing up sideways or upside down? Is there anyone who can fix this? ;)

I personally would not modify this washer, it is in pristine condition and you are super lucky to have found it this way. I would enjoy the washer as is, unaltered.

This specific model triggers strong feelings of anemoia for myself. I once lived in a condo that had it been built 1 year earlier it would have had this exact same model. But instead I had to endure the cruel joke which took their place, only to feel betrayed when I discovered the stark difference in older units enjoyed by individuals who seemed unaware of just how good they really had it.

I wish FF washers had continued to be make these into the mid-2000s. It would have been well deserved for everyone involved.

GE needs to bring back the filter-flos.

You know, the more I look at this minty FF the more I am starting to feel the same way lol. These weren't bad washers.

A K-Mart bought one with the lid opening to the left which my grandma had for a many years was pretty much the only Filter-Flo in my immediate family--separate speeds, as in Normal/Gentle for both agitation and spin, three water levels and it was a standard capacity machine, and boasted Hot/Warm, Warm/Cold, and Cold/Cold temperature settings...

GE filter-flo

I remember these washers. I had one which could clean anything. It was the one with the ramped activator and minibasket. I will forever miss that machine.

No, just remembered my one long-overdue visit to an uncle's house back in 1996, boasted a filter-fly washer there, from the '80's I'd guess, with an Amana electric dryer from that era I'd visited, replacing its burnt out companion...

Not sure if it would have had the mini-basket but it was fairly near-top of the line, so most-likely, but if not noticeably present, then never to seldom used...

It's not unusual for mini-basket tubs, filter-flo pans, and the fabric softener dispensers to become separated or lost from GE washers over time, especially if the party didn't use them.

Back in the day, I was only concerned about the filter pans and had to buy a few pans because the old ones were either missing or clogged (and I didn't realize back then they could be cleaned).

I never bought fabric softener dispensers or mini-tubs and if I found a washer with those it was a pleasant surprise.
