I Don't Know... I'm sure it's still done all over, but coffee with a Swanson TV dinner just doesn't seem all that grand. I'd rather have a glass of milk instead.

I am all over that recipe for refrigerator brownie cookies!
Coffee with meals: I never want a hot beverage with my meal. Iced coffee or tea, no problem. Didn't realize this was true of me 'til I was at a friend's for lunch last week and he served coffee with a ham sandwich and potato salad. Coffee after the meal or later with dessert, please.

Swanson with coffee![]() I'm guessing here...but I'm wondering if that coffee pot is not about having coffee with your TV dinner, but more about adding a "homey" touch to suggest that Swansons is as good as homemade. I notice that the coffee pot appears to have wear and tear (although that could be wear or a flaw in the printed ad) which, in my mind, adds to that homey feeling.
Likewise, they could have pictured the TV dinner with a bottle of wine with a French label to suggest that it's top-grade cooking. Even if a closer realistic wine match might be be something Californian with a screw top.

It may also be fashion at the time Could be all these things but it may just be the fashion at the time. I'd go with the 'this looks like Grandma's coffee pot so it's supposed to evoke 'homey' feelings.'

Coffee with meals... My parents were married in 1954, and during my years of growing up, coffee was made and served with the evening meal, and special meals such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. I wonder if it was a 1950s thing, or perhaps earlier - something my mother experienced when she was growing up? I remember my grandmother serving coffee with all three meals. Then again, perhaps it is a family thing. Joe

Joe-- I think you're right. Serving coffee as the beverage with a meal was more common in yesteryear. My parents (married 1946) had/served coffee with meals. I'm relatively new to coffee; didn't start drinking it 'til I was nearly 40. And the friend I had lunch with who served coffee with the meal is a good twenty years older than me.
Remember when people always put a little relish tray with pickles and pickled beets on the table? This post was last edited 08/10/2012 at 19:45

Dr. Pepper: My first experience with the good Dr. was circa 1964, when I was in kindergarten. My high school-age sister had friends over after a football game, and she heated a saucepan of Dr. Pepper, which was advertised as a hip-young-generation replacement for stodgy old hot apple cider. After some insistence on my part, she poured a steaming ladleful into my little A&W Root Beer mug. I took a few swallows and it came right back up, all over the kitchen floor. I would not go near Dr. Pepper again until my 30's, when I tried some--perhaps more sensibly--on ice.
Arbilab-- I like your idea for homemade TV dinners. We're old enough to remember when they had to be heated in a regular oven, LOL!

food memories...![]() Those Nabisco Bacon Thins... I could eat half a box in 10 minutes. They were bursting with articicial bacon flavor goodness...and those boxed pizza kits, fun although you had to stretch the stingy crust tissue-paper thin to make a 12" pie, and that sawdust-like little packet of cheese wasn't too flavorful. Do they still have those? As a child I remember radio ads for Dr Pepper mentioning the 10-2-4 thing like it was medicine or some kind of tonic. Did anyone ever drink Dr Pepper 3 times a day?...maybe since it was "the friendly picker-upper." I guess that "Bolt" stuff is today's equivalent.

TV dinners costly. I remember TV dinners in my childhood, and they were expensive. So yeah arbilab, I'd say they were costly. My mom only got them on loss leader sales - they were too expensive for regular consumption. (An old Heloise book I skimmed from probably that era had 'how to make your own TV dinners' in it, so maybe you had some inspiration :) )

Bubble Up My grandfather (being a good Italian) enjoyed jug wine. He always added Bubble Up to the wine (50-50 mix). Seldom did I see him without his wine-Bubble Up mix by the side of his chair. Of course, my sister and I loved Bubble Up straight. Great lemon-lime soda--better than what's out there today!
