I saw this really interesting video on the Hoover Crystaljet, which I predict was made between (1986-1991), which was designed to be shown in stores to educate customers of the benefits of owning a dishwasher. I've not heard of the Super Crystaljet Deluxe, but it looks very smart for its time.

I love the points made by Rosalind Lloyd about the benefits of owning a dishwasher, being hygienic and saving time at the sink, as well as off-setting the disadvantages (e.g. it takes the same amount of energy as a washing machine) as people were often put off owning one.

The same YouTube user also has a great Hoover Ecologic dealer video, made in 1991-1992 I think, also educating customers of the environmentally friendly nature of the machine (automatic load sensing and the durability).

the Ecologic link

The best bit is when the crane is holding the Ecologic by its door and mentions the durability of the machine. If only machines were as durable as today.

That Dishwasher: CyrstalJet

Looks very much akin to the fantasy "EuroStar Grande" machine I envisioned.

Tell me, does the TOL model use a Rapid-Advance timer? It sure looks like it!

@washer111

Yes I think that's a rapid-advance timer on the Super Crystaljet Deluxe.

Ecologic savings

Perhaps it's just me but I always thought the "savings" from the Ecologic range were pretty underwhelming compared to those touted by the other manufacturers of the time. 10% something...I'm sure Hotpoint's were more like 50% something (admitedly mostly through increasing stated capacity on synthetics cycles by about 50%!).

Then again, maybe Hoovers were a little more economical to run than the competition before that?

I seem to recall the savings offered by the Classica/New Wave range following the Ecologics were somewhat more impressive!

The power of marketing, eh?

Like the promo video, very interesting !!

My parents had the first Crystaljet in 1986, it was very advance for the time and some were even weary of it, it went on for many years, and from memory i can't rememeber anything anything ever going wrong with it.

Cheers
Keith

I had a Crystaljet De Luxe

From 1988 to 1995 and my opinion of it was, frankly, it was nothing exceptional. It certainly did not wash as well as the Philips 2000 it replaced and at seven years it did not last any longer. It was replaced with an Indesit 4000 which was comparably cheaper and lasted around nine years of so. As I recall the indesit washed better too

To me, it sounds like their recommendation to use "Rinse/Hold" after every meal is an attempt to "hide" the machines possibly poor baked/dried on gack removal ability. Who's with me on that one?

Besides, if you have to run the Rinse/Hold say 5-6 times before running the machine on a proper cycle, some of the dishes will be practically clean - making this a LOUSY suggestion to the homeowner (and an absolute waste of water). Machines of this era were using around 5.5L for each fill, so that would equate to around 30L of water used to "rinse" the dishes. I hope people used their economy program afterwards...

Besides, running the rinse program on many machines just spreads a ton of garbage everywhere imaginable - and will end up making some people's machine smellier (i.e. those who don't scrape plates very well.)

The Crystaljets were made in Spain

As mentioned in the bottom left of the brochure.

For your information, Currys own brand 'Mondia' seemed to come from the same factory, just as Hoover switched to the 'Logic' styling on its dishwashers, which was around 1990. The Mondia Currys models had the older Hoover styling.

Just watched part of the video and ...Yes!!!!!

The Hoover Super Crystaljet Deluxe that Rosalind uses in that video, was also badged as "Mondia" for Currys in 1990!

I distinctly remember the array of push-buttons and the rotary progress indicator, as well as the cross-hatch pattern on the control panel.

I think Hoover stopped importing from Spain, and instead started making their own at Merthyr Tydfil with the Logic washer control panel styling.

Thank heavens for Youtube! :-)

Rosalind Lloyd

I was wondering where I had seen her before - it was in Doctor Who, in 1978. She played the nurse of the Pirate Captain in "The Pirate Planet".

...

She also played Heather, a love interest of del in the 80's. Back to dishwashers id love to see a super crystaljet deluxe on ebay but i reckon it won't be as white!
