I hope you get these to add to your collection. You deserve them!

Isn't it strange how these things are turning up lately? Hope we get to hear the story on how they came to be never used.

Be nice to know what models these are! The Whirlpool washer at least has bleach & fabric softener dispenser, and the dryer has a drop-down door so they may be pretty, somewhat high-endy!

Should be an 18#er.  My guess is LDA-8800, which is one step below the TOL 9800 of the time.

Notice there are two cycles on the dryer's timer, which would be timed or electronic autodry. Thermostatic autodry would have separate Regular and Perm Press auto cycles.

Yielding to Glen the WP Guru:.... is this machine, an LDA 6900, a few years than the discovery? Never knew its year of birth. The temp dial is different, but they're certainly kissin' cousins. Still going strong after all these how many years? This belonged to my Aunt Alice and has never seen a repairman. She gave it to me because the cabinet was rusting a bit at the bottom. Gotta love perfectionist Aunties. Whirlpool's longevity and dependability are remarkable, something you don't hear about too often.

Glen, can you tell me the year?

First of all everyone, THANK YOU all for the birthday wishes....they are very much appreciated. It has been a nice birthday weekend.

I called about the machines -- sadly for us in the club they are sold! The nice guy who answered the phone said "Oh those should not still be on there, they've been sold."

So, presumably one day another set will come about. At least I was the buyer of a belt drive when they were still in production so if I don't find another it won't be a huge disappointment.

That is by far my favorite surgilator. I prefer it over the winged thang. Not so much an anti-wing thing as an anti-suds caker. I'd rather see the turnover...

Correct, per fill.  About 44 to 46 gallons for the whole normal cycle.  More for perm press.

Water use...

kenmoreguy64's profile picture
Dan, the later 18lb machines fill with about 22 gallons, but the original 18lb models, 1967-1981 fill with as much as 25 gallons.

The later machines, mid 1981 to 1987, were considered energy saver models for their use of less water and associated energy.

Glenn -

The most I've seen in Kenmores is 25.something gallons, but water capacity seems to vary as models do with different agitators. The smaller Surgilator agitator probably takes up the least space of all the agitators used.

Any chance you could decode my machine's birth date? LDA 6900? Thanks.

To all water lovers: On the double cooldown PP cycle, at full water level, this old tank of a girl uses approx. 80 gallons.

Not Surprised They Sold Quickly

At only $400 for a NIB Whirlpool set am betting it was a local person wanting a good W&D pair that was better than the "Energy Star" garbarge that passes for top loaders today. Don't think you can get a decent TL washer alone today for that price.

Or, OTOH a member spied the advert and nabbed them, guess we will have to wait and see.

If the things are indeed sold the seller should at least take down the CL advert. Hate when persons go on about "oh they were sold long ago", and act bothered that someone is contacting them about whatever.

Happy Birthday Gordon!

Don't worry, something interesting will pop up again soon! Indeed now that the housing market is "on the mend" it seems not a day or week goes by without something jumping out of the woodwork that was in a home someone either just purchased or needs to get shot of because they are moving house.

MickeyD,

Being an LDA series of vintage, it's the same range as the machine of topic ... 1976-1977.  The serial number codes the year & month of manufacture.

And yet the temp controls are so very different.

Serial Number for my Golder Girl: C71006331

Ah ha! ~ I see a 7 and a 6 in the serial.

Maybe you could use this example as an opportunity to teach us how to decode Whirlpool #'s.

Clyde, OH facility.
10th week
of 1977

I hope the following info is all accurate.

Model number syntax from 1962 to 1981 had the year designator as 2nd character.
J = 1962 (LJA-3200W Whirly washer of my childhood)
K = 1963
L = 1964
M = 1965 (LME-4600W Whirly dryer of my childhood)
P = 1966
R = 1967
S = 1968
T = 1969
V = 1970
W = 1971
X = 1972
Y = 1973
A = 1974-75 (LAA-9800 was the last 3-speed belt-drive Imperial Mark 18 washer, LAE/I-9800 dryer had three tumble speeds)
D & E = 1976-77 (LDE/I-9800 was the last dryer with multiple [two] tumble speeds)
F & G = 1978-79 (LFA-9800 was the first electronic belt-drive washer)
H = 1980-81

The syntax then changed, placing the year designator in 8th position.
J = 1981
K = 1982
L = 1983 (ET16JKLWR0 granny's refrigerator)
M = 1984
P = 1985 (LA7800XP Imperial 70 belt-drive washer of note)
R = 1986
S = 1987
T = 1988
V = 1989
W = 1990
X = 1991
Y = 1992
A = 1993
B = 1994
D = 1995
E = 1996
F = 1997
G = 1998
H = 1999
J = 2000 (GSX9885JQ0 Catalyst I refurbished)
K = 2001 (GVW9959KQ1 my daily-driver Calypso)
L = 2002
M = 2003
P = 2004
R = 2005
S = 2006
T = 2007
V = 2008
W = 2009
X = 2010
Y = 2011
A = 2012
B = 2013
... etc.

Model syntax covers all product lines, not just laundry.  Note that model number year reflects marketing, not necessarily the manufacture year.  Some items may be produced for some period of years with only engineering changes.  Engineering change is the ending 1 to 2 digits.

My parents have a Whirly wall oven with model-year of 1995 (RBD245PDQ15 - D in 8th position) ... but the engineering change (last digits) is 15, which is quite a high number, and the serial indicates manufacture 43rd week of 2005.

We bought a new gas range for the grandmother last week.  Model WFG114SWQ0, which is 2009, and interestingly an engineering change of 0, but the serial indicates manufacture 13th week of 2012.

Serial numbers, back to 1970 and possibly a little further. Very old numbers have a different syntax, with the facility and date codes at the end instead of beginning.

The first-position letter indicates the manufacturing facility.  Washers are usually C for Clyde OH.  Dryers are typically M for Marion OH.

Second character is year of manufacture

3rd & 4th position *numbers* is week of the year.

Remaining digits are the sequence/order of manufacture in the week.

Due to repetition of the serial year code, the date code from the model number may be needed to accurately place the manufacture year, along with an "awareness" of the general vintage of the unit.

Products sourced from other manufacturers have an additional character in 2nd position (immediately after the first) to indicate the source (such as the German-made Duet washers).

The same serial number syntax applies to many Whirlpool-produced products of other brands -- KitchenAid laundry, Kenmore, Roper, etc.

Year codes
0 = 1970
1 = 1971
2 = 1972
3 = 1973
4 = 1974
5 = 1975
6 = 1976
7 = 1977
8 = 1978
9 = 1979
0 = 1980
1 = 1981
2 = 1982
3 = 1983 (E348223771 the grandmother's refrigerator)
4 = 1984
5 = 1985
6 = 1986
7 = 1987
8 = 1988
9 = 1989

Then the codes were expanded to help avoid repetition
X = 1990
A = 1991 (CA2604297 my KitchenAid KAWE760 washer)
B = 1992
C = 1993
D = 1994
E = 1995
F = 1996
G = 1997
H = 1998
J = 1999 (CJ4807360 Kenmore 110.20907990 washer I refurbed, the parents have it now)
K = 2000
L = 2001 (CL4104880 daily driver Calypso)
M = 2002 (MM2302671 the Calypso-match dryer)
P = 2003
R = 2004
S = 2005 (XS4306965 the parents' wall oven)
T = 2006
U = 2007
W = 2008
Y = 2009
0 = 2010
1 = 2011
2 = 2012 (VE21304602 the grandmother's new stove)
3 = 2013
4 = 2014
... etc.

Yeowsuh! ~ It'll take some time to master this.

mickeyd's profile picture

Two readings so far have made it clearer.

In the Spring, I had the first awakening when you showed me this:

GVW-9959KQ1 (specific to the Calypso)
G = Gold laundry line
V = Vanguard technology
W = Resource saver washer
9959 = 9 cycles, 9 speed combos, 5 temp combos, 9 (infinite) water levels
K = 2001 year
Q = color (Q is white in this case -- T for biscuit, L for pewter)
1 = engineering revision

Haven't had the pleasure of a Calypso in person, so the 9 speed combinations have remained a mystery to me. It will be biscuits and pewter for me, please, when I get one.

A scholar and a gentleman, Glenn. Thank you. Be dreaming of letters and numbers, shortly.
