Maytag Heaves Neptune T/L Over Side

Maytag is closing its line of Maytag Neptune top loading washers and dryers originally launched at the 2003 KBIS. The Neptune T/L, like the Whirlpool Calypso sing soprano, that is they are vertical axis machines designed without an actuator. A quick skimming of web chatter on the T/L leans to problematic (wouldn't "Problematic" be a great name for a washer?). The Calypso was on the receiving end of a class action lawsuit in 2004 (See Aug 2004

Neptune TL's have been disappearing from the Atlanta area for about the last month.

Sears still has the Calypso with updated styling.

The exciting aspect of this bit of news is that the few people who actually purchased a Neptune TL have an instant collector's items on their hands. It's good that Gansky has one; we know he'll preserve it and when we're all here 20 years from now talking about that one-off, short-lived Maytag experiment, he'll have one in ace condition to trot out for show.

I'd imagine they'll eventually be a most sought-after collectable. No other manufacturer seems to be jumping on the bandwagon to copy its mechanical design. The 'bouncing basket' machine of the future!

Has Maytag actually made an announcement about this, or is this just a rumor originating at Applianceadvisor.com?
