I will be in Memphis on Saturday.  I have contacted the seller and he will get back with me later this evening.  Hopefully he can meet me halfway as this is a 2.5 hour drive from Memphis and I have other things to take care of there as well.

Unless there is someone closer that can help me make arrangements, if so shoot me an email on here!

Looks like a cool dryer - and probably worth a 2.5 hour drive, but don't buy it believing it's a 1956.  The square cabinets debuted in 1957 and this one looks like what was the companion the the 54" wide builder unit that included a stainless steel sink for a lid on the washer plus a companion dryer with no controls visible on the exterior.  Typically this unit was installed with a field-installed plastic laminate top on the dryer for counter space.

If you get it, we will need more photos!

Oops!  Forgot to mention that the 54" wide combination washer/dryer unit was introduced in 1962.

This is in fact the mate to the "Kitchen Sink" 1962 GE Filter-Flo. I'm so glad somebody got it! Pictures! Please!

First one in the flesh.

I read about this in the books of spec sheets in the appliance department at our local Rich's store! I loved the hidden telephone-style dial control. This is the dryer that matches the sink top washer that John has in his basement, except his is white.

In the original sales literature, this pair was shown installed in a shmart bar area like if you converted the laundry closet to a bar. The washer would give you the bar sink. They showed the mirrored walls with shelves for glasses etc. It was the answer to every space-deprived hard drinking, entertaining household; just don't ask where to keep the detergent and bleach. On a less glamorous note, it also gave a chance to have a laundry sink, a feature that had vanished from most homes. The standpipe had to be in just the right location for the sink drain. I wonder what the last line in the list of washer features means: Top access shelf.

The dryer features mention a lighted control dial. I wonder if GE moved the drum light to the left side of the opening and used a prism or lens to let the drum light illumine the dial from the back. Interesting how they put the Push To Start button at the top edge of the door. It almost looks as if they combined it with the door safety switch.

GE Sink-Top Washer and Dryer

I talked to the seller and we have a deal so it looks like we will have a Washer and dryer pair for all to see and tryout, but I guess I will have to paint the washer front pink LOL. Thank you Barry for the heads up and thank you Ken for posting the brochure, I had never actually seen any sales literature for this neat product.

I got the washer almost 20 years ago and it only had a sock stuck in the pump otherwise it is in great shape. These should make a really interesting pair, I dough that GE sold very many and they probably fired the guy that thought they would make any money on them. These came out soon after GE built the cool Partio-Cart, to me this was a great period in American history as we thought there was no limit to what Americans could accomplish after the election of President John Kennedy.

I'm glad you got it!

The labels on GE dryer doors sometimes steamed off after years of use. Our lasted a good 14 years and then gave up the grip. I suspect it happened more frequently with dryers like ours that weren't vented properly (ours had been vented to the roof at the beginning, but nobody but me bothered to check the back of the machine until 12 years later when I pulled the machine from the wall out of curiosity and saw that the flexible conduit to the built-in vent pipe had ruptured. There was a 27" wide, 2 foot high, 4" thick wad of lint at the back of the machine. My Father, who was usually Mr. Safety when it came to household stuff, couldn't have cared less. I guess a lot of house fires caused by dryer lint had yet to be reported. I think we were lucky.).

In case you want to know what it says:

Looks to me like the dialing action goes counter-clockwise.  I wonder if that was due to a wide-reaching Bell System/Western Electric patent.  I would sure love it if I could Dial-N-Dry my clothes!

Congratulations, John!  What a rare find!

Barry, thanks for posting this.

no dryer yet

joefuss1984's profile picture

As I was headed to Memphis on Saturday I received a message from the seller "I have been offered $300 for the dryer by another interested party.  Can you pay $300?"

I replied, "I cannot but if the other party does not come through to let me know"

As of now I haven't heard anything.  I am wait till about the middle of the week and contact the seller again.
