A while back, I posted a question about a late 1960s Kenmore dryer (1969, I think) that would not stay running after the start button was released. The diagnosis at that time was a bad motor.

I may be able to get a motor out of a neighbor's dryer that (right now) appears to be headed to crusher world. (A sad moment, but this dryer is in terrible shape, with significant drum rust, banged up cabinet, and other cosmetic issues.) But I'm told it's operationally still fine.) However, this dryer is newer than the one with the bad motor. I am wondering if the newer motor will work.

The model number of this newer (possible motor source) dryer is 110.86570110. I cannot find any model name, like "70" or "90". But the control panel indicates "Cycle Signal" (buzzer, I suppose), and Automatic Care (More/Less Dry for both Cottons/Sturdy and separate Permanent Press). There is the usual timed heated, and air only settings. The lower right hand side of the control panel says "Heavy Duty Plus"

A photo of the control panel, which may help identify approximate year. (Excuse the photo--I was in a rush when I took it, and, at the best of times, I am not the world's greatest photographer.)

Incidentally, yes, I do realize that it might be better to to just buy a new motor since it's anyone's guess how long a used motor might have. However, I figure it's worth exploring options.

John,

If the dryer is headed to the crusher world, it sounds like you don't have much to loose by trying.

The donor dryer is an entry level 1985 Kenmore 70. I haven't a clue why, but Kenmore put the series number on their metal panel washers in the mid 1980s, but not on the matching dryers. They did this in the second half of the 1970s as well.

If I recall a couple of your posts, the dryer that may need a motor is a 1969 500, is that correct? As long as its not a 1965 or earlier product, chances are both the '69 dryer and the '85 would call for the same replacement motor today. Give us your dryer's model number and we can be sure of that.

Whether the '85's motor will fit I can't say for absolute certain, but I feel like it will. There were lots of different motors out there with different sources of manufacture and different Whirlpool part numbers, but most all of them from full-size dryers of this era sub-over to the same replacement motor, BOL to TOL models.

Again, since the '85 seems worthless except for scrap, I'd just try it and see.

I have been looking for a nice example of this dryer (without drum rust and cabinet dents, lol) for some time. This is the dryer that I tried to buy new while in college. The salesman wouldn't hear of it, and sold me the step up dryer which has a 'Knit/Delicate' in the 10-o'clock cycle quadrant and a lower heat setting. He thought I needed it, but I almost never use it. The dryer I bought was/is very common, the one you found is not at all. Undoubtedly other salesmen told their customers the same thing I was told "you need two heat settings".
