I'm thinking GE or Hotpoint, and it has Air Freshener button.
Likely gas model with that access door?

Not sure why,

but that machine seems to SCREAM "Frigidaire" to me.

Amazing.  Like Oldsmobile in the 70's and 80's - General Electric had a habit of plastering their name everywhere on their products.

But this is a rare example of their name being omitted on this very TOL dryer, and instead carries the moniker PREMIER.  Wasn't this name used on their gas dryers in '64 instead of GE?

You are correct. 'Premier' was the badge they first used on their gas models. This is definietly a TOL GE.

Ben, I believe you are correct.  I didn't notice the Premier moniker at first.  I recall that someone posted some while ago that Premier was GE's branding for gas dryers at first ... can't have the name General Electric on a gas dryer!

Post# 637559 , Reply# 7   11/8/2012 at 12:05 (4,185 days old) by Tomturbomatic (Beltsville, MD)

They were not sure how well gas dryers would go over so they used the Premier name for the first year. They owned that name from when they bought the Premier Vacuum Cleaner Co. so that they could market vacuum cleaners under the GE name.

Speaking of GE vacuum cleaners, did they ever have a powerhead for any model of cannister cleaner? I don't remember any such animal.

Yes Tom GE did make a vacuum with a power nozzle

appliguy's profile picture

It was a TOL Swivet Top Cleaner and I believe it was only offered in 1962/63.  You can see a picture of it if you buy the 1962 GE floorcare brochure off the ephemera page on this sight. Just select GE for the Publisher and Vacuum cleaners from the restrict to product line and the brochure will come up. PAT COFFEY

This GE V14 is definitely the above dryers doppelganger.

Beautiful machine.

bajaespuma's profile picture

I believe this is a 1966 "B" model. IIRC, 1966 was the first year they offered gas dryers. The good news is that this dryer would match, for the most part, '64 and '65 TOL washers. And yes, the GE TOL's from 1964-1966 had backsplashers that looked very much like contemporary Rollermatic backsplashers except that GE was still making the mistake of shining those big fluorescent lights right into the users' eyes and GM had the good sense to illuminate the controls only. And GE didn't really splash its logo or its company name all over their appliances until late in the Sixties after a CEO change. After that, the GE logo appeared on the cap of every Activator, and embossed on every Filter-pan and Jet-Swirl dispenser. They were a little more restrained before that.

First GE Built Gas Dryer

combo52's profile picture

Mark this dryer should be closer to 1964, GE introduced Gas Dryers under the Premier name by 1964 and maybe a little earlier. The pink under-counter GE electric dryer that Tom and I got last month was already designed to be built as a gas dryer and it was built in early 1963, so they were at least doing some serious planning for one. One of the bad things about early GE built gas dryers was they pretty much all had constant burning pilot lights, hopefully this TOL model might have electric ignition so the inside of the machine will not be a rusted mess. Good luck on getting this very rare dryer, I have never one of these in gas.

Actually when I went back and looked at the picture again I believe it says right on the control panel With Electric Ignition, which is probably the only reason that this dryer could have ever lasted this long, as it is I have never seen an early GE gas dryer and many that we did see from the late 1960s were badly rusted. Ken may be correct that this one may be closer to 1966, but I did not think they kept the Premiere name that long. If you get this dryer and decide not to keep it keep me in mind, Thanks John.

GE Power Nozzle

Ge also re designed their power nozzle and used it into the early 70s, Filter Queen bought the rights to build it, along with GEs cordwinder, both were used on Filter Queens for many years.

I'm picking the GE Premier gas dryer up Monday, when I enlarge the photo it looks like it says Electric Ignition.

And here's the washer with it, not quite as uniquely thrilling but a damn fine machine. I have a 1977 Filter Flo --currently out of the line-up but a great performer.
And look at that knob to the right.......SUDS

out in the garage, but at the sellers I did plug in it, motor works but belt is broken, and the flourescent light came on. Run of the mill GE innards, but what a control console and lights! Some year I have to fix the date on my camera.

Electric ignition. I believe this to be a 1966, was that already old technology or pretty new for that era?

I will get the washer tomorrow, a MOL Filter flo from the late 70's, not a real match. But it's a suds model, damn cool. and it has the mini-wash tub and filter pan, missing the softener dispenser is all. I plugged it in and put it in spin for 12 seconds before electricians removed the fuse box in the seller's renovation home, then the rest of the washer removal was flashlights only.

Picture shows the metal-framed dryer lint filter and the hind end of my dog Abner whose hair will fill it up. When did they go plastic?

I have the access door cover. This machine has very little rust, even on the bottom, despite life in an ancinet ugly basement. Notice there's no door handle.

GE

akronman's profile picture

It's called PREMIER and doesn't say GE on the console, but the wiring schematic on the back says GE, as does the serial # plate, small print at the bottom of picture, hard to read MFG by GENERAL ELECTRIC. I haven't checked the exact date yet, but wiring diagram has ...066 in 2 places, I m guessing 1966. This will be my third mis-matched Lighted Console machine (Should LIGHTED CONSOLE be ALL CAPS?lol) a 1960 Whirlpool Imperial washer, 1962 Frigidaire Imperial dryer, and this Premier Dryer. Some day matches for them all.

Custom V14

akronman's profile picture

The front corner logo says CUSTOM V14, the filter is metal edge. The innards look exaclty like my 92 Hotpoint, how long did GE make this overall dryer?

Aferim!

bajaespuma's profile picture

You can find NOS lint filters for that dryer. The next time I see one I'll post it for you. What changed most significantly wasn't the plastic frame for the lint filters, but the fine mesh was replaced by window screen crap. Not a big deal given that most of the lint gets blown out the back anyway.

That's not a 1977 washer; it's from the late Eighties and probably one of the last model years that offered Suds Return. Enjoy them in good health!
