Probably a 83-85 machine.

whirlykenmore78's profile picture

This was the better of the 2 varients offered as it has the porcelain top and lid as well as the white 2 layer tub.   I'm sure I missed something and Gordon will set me right.    HEY GORDON WE NEED YOU HERE!

Is it white or gray.

The lite gray color would certainly make it rare.

Early 1980s LKM Washer

It does look a little gray [ platinum ] in the picture but I would bet by the yellowed dispenser lid that the machine is actually white and unfortunately IMO it is the ugliest LKM ever, LOL, I still have a few customers with this washer.

Never.

I wondered the same thing regarding whether the machine is Platinum in color, or just what color.

The first picture looks a bit more almond than gray. I have a Platinum Kenmore and when photographed with a lousy camera, it looks darker than this machine does. I have also photographed almond machines with the same lousy camera and they come out resembling this one, color-wise. This happens most when in a dark garage or room and using a flash. I know the machine is not white, because the money shot picture shows the difference between the tub ring and the machine's top. When white, the shades between the various white parts isn't much different, even in bad lighting.

Also, when white, the plastic lid over the triple dispenser usually yellows, and looks much different than the rest of the top. Almond ones don't seem to change color as much, or they just make themselves more "almonder". The machine surely does look platinum gray, but I would bet, just from my experience in taking pics of these in bad lighting with a not-so-great camera, that this machine is Almond.

Sandy - believe it or not, there are people who like these machines, and some who grew up using these as kids, and have fond memories of them like many do of older belt-drives. I will agree however that this is not the most attractive of the black panel models, or of BD Kenmores in general. The 1976-1980 layout was less 'harsh' than this one, for sure, which was in use 1981-1986, though this to me is not the ugliest Lady K.

Gordon

Here are a couple pictures for comparison:

White. Notice the really yellowed dispenser lid. Most white ones look that way by now.

Almond. This machine is dirty, but you can see the overall appearance of the dispenser lid hasn't drifted nearly as much.

Looking at these pictures though, I am wondering if the machine in this ad truly is Platinum. Might just have to find out...

I'd place a wager that the Lady in the ad is indeed Platinum.  Handsome washer (yes, I did just call a Lady, handsome. haha).

Well, sure enough

The washer is indeed Platinum, I just spoke to the seller, who is the original owner. It has a matching dryer to go with too. Working on it!

I guess it is indeed all in what you grew up with.

You see, I grew up with stuff like the '65-'66 keyboard Lady K's and Maytag 906's, and when console styling became nothing more than screen-printing on a black background, it felt to me like an era had passed, which indeed it had.

I miss the glamour of '60s appliance styling; very little that has come since can equal it.

I sense a change in the altitude of Charlotte by a few feet. A few more machines and Gordon will singlehandedly change the Earth's rotation like changing the weight on a car tire... LOL!

I suppose I have room, but I really don't need these. The seller is currently still using the dryer. They replaced the washer because their son brought over another washer with an electronic board that was bad. The seller fixed the board, but the son never came and got it, and they began using the repaired machine instead of the Lady K. The displaced Lady K has been sitting for 7 or 8 months they say.

To get the set, their dryer would have to be replaced. They're willing to sell the dryer for $75 as well, but I don't know about all that. I don't quite get how they're willing to sell the dryer for $75 when they have to replace it.

I could probably get these sent to CLT in the New Year, but I certainly don't need them, and we don't need Charlotte falling into the abyss due to excess weight either...

Well, Gordon, it would make a nice set of daily drivers for someone, or a newbie's first collectable.  It's better than seeing them turned into a Toyota, or something.

Look at it as you're doing someone a favor, ya just don't know who as of yet.

Interesting

And I thought it would only be of interest to me. ?

When I first joined this AWESOME group of highly talented, energetic, knowledgeable, and virile people in 2002, I could hear the disappointment vibrate through the ethernet cable when I came out of the closet about my love of colored appliances from the 70s and early 80s.

"What?!  You like the Avacado and Harvest Gold ones?  Those are just CRAP !!  you suck!"

was basically the feedback I remember.  And if I take the time to check the official records....

And then there was a huge  UPROAR because at that time, there was not the 3 different forums.  And the embittered old guard felt they needed to segregate themselves off from those of us in the 'unwashed', washed (lol) class.   It's been like watching the dying white republicans as they shrivel into obscurity, all along acting as if they are in charge.

Then it was decided that the "cut-off" for the valueable stuff was 1980.  Apparently matching the disappearance of the I-18 or the end of Disco. ?

Anyway, here we are 10 years later.  That 20 year time period now, for the Imperial forum, includes DD Whirlpools, and, soon will include (even I cringe at this)  the new GE top load designs that followed the FF.

Frankly,  I think the line should be drawn at when the top loader was made 2nd class to the Frontloader.

We can argue about date, anywhere from 1998 to ??? 2004 ?

The stuff from the top loader class was in just about everyones lives, and there is a lot of good memories for everyone.  That's what this fine site is all about. (sure the stuff from 1986 to 2002 was pretty bland)

Because of needed water conservation issues, things needed to change in the appliance market for the sake of our environment.  From about 1998 forward, there has been a push for technology change toward frontloaders and other types of new ideas for laundry and I'll bet there will be many to follow.

Anyway, I'm rambling.

When I first saw this washer, I thought of this ad.  Here is said washer right off the pages, the BIG book pages.

Isn't it interesting the prices, when adjusted for inflation.  A typical washer would sell for about the same today.  $400 to $500 was a considerable sum back then.

huh?

Who "decided" the cutoff was 1980? Who said Avocado and Harvest Gold were crap? The only vintage machines I have these days are 2 matching Maytag 806 sets, and an oddball 806 washer,  all Gold, and an avocado Whirlpool set.

Kenny, you work picking up old appliance?  That's cool.  Lucky you.  Always something new.  Like a surprise party every time.  I remember picking up appliances from the rear entrance of a dealer.  Each day, I had no idea what would be there.

If your profile is up to date, you still have some frigs?  Nice collection.

But heaven forbid you had been around in 2002 and admitted to your 70s color interest.  My math is a bit off- year  2002 minus 20 years, as specified in the forum = 1982.  Now, the arbitrary year is 1992, soon to be 1993.  Not my rules.  I wasn't the one who put up the hissy fit.

There is a certain group of people here who are SPECULATORS, as there most likely is in any group that collects things.  These are the people who only participate if an item is worth money, or if they think they can make it worth money.  It appeared that their belief was that stuff from the 1950s was some how ~~ desirable above all else.  Which is a typical, self-centered, juvenile attitude of the baby boomer.  Anything getting into the 70s or newer was, (rolling eyes) some how inferior.  blah, blah.  It doesn't work that way.

It's shallow, and those people aren't trustable, in my opinion, because their perspective is biased by greed.

I migrate to this site strictly for the fun and memories.  I've easily spent $5000 on my collection and never did it expecting money back.  And I don't regret any of it.  Hey, if you can resell something for money, thats fine, but, I never expected it.

It's genuine.  There is heart in it for me.

And I have had an interest in some of the older machines, such as the combined washer dryers from the 60s, but when I ask about them, those that would know, don't want to spend any time answering me, because they have drawn a pointless line to segregate themselves behind, and I'm over here.  So fine, I don't need the snottiness, they aren't going anywhere with that attitude,  and the 'attitude' has not stopped me from doing my thing.

Any shallow person can be a speculator, and then we end up with things like the financial mess like the one our country is working its way out of, and our countryside littered with empty, ugly houses that were OVER built on speculation

Anyway,  this is a worthwhile conversation for this forum Because, people come to a site like this, for different reasons.

Some simply need repair help on a current appliance,

some for the memories,

and others because they are looking to see what they can make cash on.

It would be nice if the profiles specified peoples interests.

When I found this site, I was thrilled. Though I had no idea that people were actually participating for the sake of making money by buying and selling the stuff.

Actually,  when I started fixing and collecting in 1981ish (and those colors were still being made), I was a bit biased.  As I got into the mid 80s,  I didn't care for Avacodo or Coffee.   In the 2000s it was all just fun and I came to like some things from the 60s, as well.

As for who: I believe it was an obnoxious person from from Boston, there may have been someone from Oklahoma.  It was a small, but vocal group.  I don't remember exact names...  Or if they are part of the AW.org anymore.

It used to be, at least as of a couple of years back,  that there was an archive going back to before I joined.  Every year, every conversation.   Originally it was just all one group, then it was divided up into 3 groups (pink, blue, yellow though the yellow group which was for non-washer related topics was not saved (?)), the other 2 groups were added to that.  Apparently Robert has decided that it is a burden to maintain, or I am going blind.  There is a lot of good stuff in there.  Lots of cool pictures and good information people can actually learn stuff from.
