Guys I've spoken with a rubber extrusion company and I am making final arrangements now to have Westinghouse Laundromat door boot Q-4688 reproduced. Another member on here supplied me with a NIB boot from Westinghouse that I could use to have a new dye made. I need to know how many people would like to have one (or more) of these so I can start coming up with a solid number to have produced. The dye would belong to me so I could have more made down the road if I wanted but I think it would be wise to just make enough to last for a good long while. The gentleman at the rubber company gave me some ideas of different materials I could use but there is a cost factor so if there are only a few needed I'm not going to use anything super high grade and just try to go with OEM specs. Please let me know either by replying to this or sending me an email on here so I can get a number together. Thanks

Depending on the final $$$ numbers I would be definitely interested.  Unlike most solid-tub washer outer tub boots with a flat sealing surfaces, this boot will be a challenge to produce proper sealing, but I suspect it can be done.

Mark me down as well!

If you have enough interest, it would be wise to use the best grade rubber materials possible. A couple of the boots kept on-hand could last a lifetime for an occasional use washer.

Materials

It all basically comes down to how many I have made. If only a few people want one I'm not going to go all out because the cost would be outragious and I doubt anyone would pay it. If I can have about 50 or even 100 made then I can spread the cost out for them enough to go with a higher grade material that would last past the life of any current user or for that fact the machines themselves.

I totally agree, Dave. Let's try to keep the thread active for a few days to reach everyone possible. Rubber technology has improved a great deal in the last half-century. The new silicone GE outer tub boots are far and away better than the original.

Interesting.

What machines will this boot fit? I don't have any Westinghouse washers and if I want to order one "just in case" I'd like to know what it might fit.

Is this for the Slant Front machines, the Flat Front machines, the Spacemates, etc.?

If this supplier does good work, perhaps more parts could be re-made in the future, like Frigidaire bellows, early Maytag HoH dryer door gaskets, etc.

Very interesting.
PS: If possible, please have the part number(s) as part of the dye so it is evident on the finished product.

Dave

Can you confirm with a picture the model and numbers it will fit, we have a number of the spacemates here, badged English Electric that require boots,

Would be fab if they would also fit the sloping front keymatics Al, but suspect not with the porthole door being so small.

on atleast two once I know the price. Is he extruding them and then vulcanizing them together? That's how Westinghouse did it originally ,extruded molds are cheaper than direct cast and that inner lip is complicated.

EPDM was always a good rubber.

Door boot Q-4688

Yes I'm with Dave (Volovoguy87) here, what do or will this fit??

I have a late 40's or early 50's (not exactly sure) Westinghouse slant front washer AND a '57 Spacemate washer.    Both need new boots.   Unfortunately the NOS boot installed on the Spacemate in April has already failed (come apart at all the seems) completely!  Cry

So depending on the final cost and which machine it fits, I would be interested in at least one, maybe two.

Q-4688 boots will only fit Slant-Front/Slant-Tub Laundromats from 1949 on up.  They will not fit Slant Front/Straight Tub or Straight Front/Straight Tub machines (1964+).  Nor will they fit the Space-mates.  Still slant front Westinghouse Laundromats are not too rare so there should be plenty of machines where this boot is needed.

Before 1949 no boots were used as the washers had an outer and inner door.

Production will start..............

Guys. I am waiting on a final quote from the company and then I will place the order for an inital run of 100 boots to be made. I will give a couple options for material on here and color before I make the final decision to see where the cost will be and if everyone agrees. I was told that white most likely would NOT be possible as the company produces mostly black rubber parts any white parts made would most likely have black traces through out the product so an off white or grey would be more likely. Any thoughts? Also, when all is said and done I will see if it is worth remaking a spacemate boot if all goes well with this one.

Dave

I'm assuming the original was white, I don't think I've seen one (or don't remember seeing one).   What ever (reasonable) color you come up with is fine with me.   Off-white, light or medium grey... perfect!

spacemates

Hi Dave

Great to read this thread and to read of your putting into action the thoughts I'm sure of many of us working on vintage washers have had, about producing obsolete door boots.

I've only thought about as far as making a clay boot and producing a plaster cast mould, that wouldn't be very precise and I wouldn't be sure of a suitable material to use, I know latex would last long at all.

But back to these westinghouse boots, i understand your looking at haveing the material extruded as the original westinghouse ones were and then joined to form the complete boot. If this is the case, and i ask not knowing much about the slantfront laundromats, otherthan what ive seen on this forum, but i do have an english electric liberator, ie a spacemate washer with the ribbed door boot, manufactured under liceince in the uk. So my question is, i know the slantfront and spacemate boots aren't interchangable, but do they have the same profile, so that the same extrusion is used but joined at a different length. If so I would be grateful to buy a length or if you can get a few spacemates boots made i would definatly buy a couple.

And as a side question, could you get the name or details of the rubber/silicone material used to manufacture the boots, to possibly use for repairs or to produce one offs using a plaster mould. I'm probably asking the impossible here, but when we have machines that could be restored but lack a boot, i tend to start thinking of possible solutions.

Thanks, look forward with interest to seeing how you get on.

Mathew

spacemate n slantfront..

...boots are only different in the size of the outer lip that fits against the cabinet door- I had a space-mate boot on a slant-front machine, & it did not seal completly , as water drooled down the front of the cabinet- I am wondering about the garter rings that came with the old boot kits....will these be supplied with the newboots?

Regarding the garter ring: I have had luck with the larger of the two GE Filter Flo boot clamps. It is the perfect size.

The original boots were a white or off white which would be best but not crucial. I would think silicone rubber would be best to use, but don't know if that is an option.

Yes I've used large clamps to hold them in place myself (at least on the space mate boot) and it was much easier than trying to get that garter ring installed. I used a Make A Clamp kit...

Production of boots

I've been kinda waiting to see if any more people wanted these boots because the more I get the cheaper it makes them. I have about 35 soft commitments for boots. I guess I will just go ahead with making 75 and sell them on here or on eBay. I will call the company Monday and give the go ahead for production. When they are done I will post on here and start selling them. I am going to guess they will between $75 and $100 with no garter ring. They will be white in color.

You know what guys, I tend to agree with Travis. While I certainly hope I'm wrong, I just have a feeling that this might not happen, at least not at this time. But hopefully in time, someone will come up with a way to do this. We are all a very talented, skilled, and most importantly creative group. I have no doubt it can happen and I hope it will. We might just have to hang on for a bit while technology advances in printing rubber products.

Trust me I want some new boots for our Westinghouse as well, I dream of them in light gray silicone!
