Thanks for this. I'll add my own favorite, Space Food Sticks.. I can still remember the taste, like Tootsie Rolls with a distinct chemical (but not unpleasant) flavor.

Exemplary work, as usual Louie.

Most of these products are still available.

The common thread from these type companies was either sugar or salt in a highly processed form.

Good and fun memories abound, even for me.

I remember those Mars Marsettes candies. We sometimes had those at the house in a dish when company came when I was a little kid.

And I see the traditional pumpkin pie recipe hasn't changed in 63 years!

And the Swift ham ad is a great example of how social class is used to sell a product. If you lived in one of those homes shown in the ad in 1939, you were doing pretty darned good in life. So the message the advert is sending is "If this is good enough for people who have money, you might want to try it too!".

I have seen that used all the time.

Whitman's sampler - still around since 1842? wow.

Although not a canned food guy, I used to buy and trust in S&W, esp. when living in California.

Never heard of Fleer's Bubble Gum..has an old name sound - or maybe another ring? :-)

These ads remind me of my mom's winter dessert, called Pie-O-My pudding cake. It was a mix, and was chocolate-fudgie like, baked in a pyrex or similar glass dish. Anyone recall? We have a recipe' that is close to it.

Good fun, as usual, these ads. :-)

I had heard if jelly roll but never knew what it was. Now I know that it's what we call Swiss roll in UK. I also remember my mother making devils food cake in the '60s.

Allen-- I did that last summer! I used recipes from these vintage ads. I found the nostalgia factor more pleasing than the food in many cases, but it was fun, none-the-less.

Frigilux and Whirlcool - You both mentioned recipes from the packages of products. I just found a like-new, hard-bound book at the thrift store, called Best Recipes From the backs of Boxes, Bottles, Cans and Jars by Ceil Dyer.

" A century's worth of proven, simple, highly popular culinary secrets - an American Heritage of classic dishes. Decades of mouth-watering suggestions." - Restaurant & Entertainment Guide International.

Another one, that I just came across, but no idea if it's good: "The Great American Name Brand Cookbook "...just in case you're interested.

Diet Pepsi

"Added Sugar, No Cyclamates."

Okay, I was under the impression "Diet" meant NO SUGAR! Hadn't they heard of other sweeteners, or were they just cheaping-out by adding sugar instead of some artificial sweetener?

But the "No Cyclamates" thing is pretty good though - glad to see they got rid of that...

I remember the "Space Food Sticks" from when I was in college. They did have a very distinctive taste. I guess that's a nice way of saying "mildly yucky". But my younger brother at the time loved them so my mom always kept them on hand for him.

It's hard to believe that Borden's dairy is for the most part gone. We still have the brand here, but a Texas & Louisiana dairy co op bought the name and I believe the brand is still available in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. They were once a powerhouse in the dairy industry. But about 15 years ago they let some hot shot ivy league types take over and the first thing they started doing was to sell off all of Borden's profitable products and to concentrate on the ones that weren't doing so well. Eventually Borden's collapsed and the conglomerate bought the company. At least the current products taste as good as the originals did.

I also remember the Fifth Ave candy bar. That one was available I think into the 70's. Chicago was a huge candy town. Tons and tons of Candy makers there like Curtiss Candies, Mars Candies, Tootsie Roll. You usually see the signs on their factories as you are approaching ORD from the air.

I'm going to give the Hunt's Pot Roast recipe a try this weekend. Cloves and ginger paired with beef roast? Haven't heard of that before.

Frozen Oyster soup available in your grocers frozen foods case. I bet that was delicious and short lived!

Hunts another recipe : Hungarian Pot Rot Roast

ovrphil's profile picture
Interesting, I looked for this recipe in my newly acquired Best Recipes and found a few pot roast recipes-just one by Hunt-Wesson called Hungarian Pot Roast.

It doesn't include ginger and cloves, but I'm sure those spices will add to the experience. The recipe I found goes like this:

"This super-flavored pot roast recipe has been on the top twenty "most wanted" lists at the Hunt-Wesson (R) test kitchens for over 15 years"(noted in 1982, book published date).

1 3-4 lb lean chuck or rump roast
1 1/2 tsp paprika
2 tsps. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
2 Tbs. pure vegetable oil
1/2 cup H20 (water)
1 bay leaf
8 to 10 small whole white onions (I wonder if Pearl onions would be good?)
8 small carrots parred
2 8-oz cans of Hunt's Tomato Sauce with Mushrooms
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp onion salt
2 Tbs. minced parsley
1 cup sour cream(optional)

Directions: Trim excess fat from meat. Sprinkle with paprika, salt, and pepper. Browni in oil in Dutch oven over medium heat. Add water and bay leaf, simmer, covered , 2 hours or until meat is almost tender. Add Hunt's Sauce, garlic, and onion salt. Cover; simmer 50 to 60 minutes longer until meat and vegetables are tender. Add parsley. Just before serving, remove from heat and gradually stir in sour cream, if desired. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

My note: I guess this can be adapted many ways to cook in different utensils, including a crock pot. I'll have to try that cloves and ginger recipe, too.

what cyclamates are. I've never heard of that! Is it just me, or do a lot of the pictures of these food ad's seem not so appetizing? It's fun to look at them though.

I just looked it up. I'm assuming it's sodium cyclamate, which interestingly is banned in the US...but not Canada and the UK, it's still in diet drinks there and 50 other countries.....
