Just finished up the RCA combo I got last September.Took it totally apart as always.Replaced tub bearings,Cleaned and lubed motor,Including clutch springs and hubs for the blower and pump.A MUST BEFORE EVER TURNING MACHINE ON!This machine was used as a dryer only, the last years of its service.I removed a large kitchen bag full of lint. This machine was also over suds MANY MANY times.By rights it should have been a total rust heap. But there was no rust at all.Just some surface rust on the base.Got real lucky on this one! This machine can never be over suds,as suds will fill the heat box suds would be everywhere! What a mess.I did not have to use soap when cleaning this machine.I replaced all insulation on machine as it had all been soaked from time to time with soapy water. The machine works very well and now is in really nice condition.Still, it took many hours to restore to working condition.I know it is so tempting to plug it in and fire it up when you get these old machines home. But It is not a good idea to do this as damage could result. Thanks for the belt and heater element John Lefever. He is always a great help to me.And full of knowledge.

Aboslutely amazing and fantabulous restoration.  I wonder just how many of these WP/LKMs were abused like this and is how they met their early demise.  What year/model number is this since I downloaded the service manual?  Looks like it's a 1957 model since there's no cool or cold temp.

Off on temp knob

The off on the temp knob turns the machine off. To set timer, add more clothes or add more soap etc.

Painting

The only painting I did was on secondary parts which were not primed. That would be the base and all grey parts. The base was the only thing that really needed to be painted. The other parts were in good condition. But the OCD kicked in and I painted them anyway.Did the same with the 57 Philco Bendix Duomatic.

"Out with the old..." I guess the old is taken to the curb for the junkmen.

NO. Something one wouldn't think of doing today.

You have done an INCREDIBLE job !
It looks fresh from the crate. Your laundry room looks spiffy, too.

Perhaps it was the heat from a dryer that saved this. The heat chased away humidity that would have made your job much worse.

Did you have to make parts, like the boot? other gaskets?

Very impressive given the amount of time and patiences that went into this.

PARTS REPAIR

I replaced ALL hoses and the pump diaphram needed to be repaired because of a 3" tear.Thank God for nylon thread.Seems to be holding well.Should this fail in time I will convert to an electric pump which would intail moving things around under the machine so it can pump the water the way it should. These diaphrams should have been reinforced like heater hose is.They may have lasted longer. All other rubber parts on machine were fine.

WOW John you never fail to amaze me with your skills at doing just about anything. Now you have me even more excited about  picking up the 1958 Gas Combo in Indiana next week  and of course getting to see you and your new machine when I get to Minnesota the following week.

I would have replied sooner but we just finished the 15th load of dishes from our holiday party for our car club this morning. I took some pictures of the loads of dishes before and after they were run, we had over 65 people for dinner.

TIME TO COMPLETE CYCLE

I never timed the wash 10 min wash plus 3 rinses.I would say about 20min max.Dry time depends on size of load and what it is.I have never dried anything more than an hour and a half.I did a test load of 8 bath towls and they dried in 1hr 15 min.good size load of t-shirts and socks took about an hour.I was surprised how well it dries with such a slow spin.

TIME TO COMPLETE CYCLE

appnut's profile picture

If hot wash is used, possible additional time may be needed/used to heat the wash water up to 140 degbrees after it enters a cold cabinet.  Maybe a minute for every1.5 degrees given it's a 4300 watt water heater.

Beautiful Bendix, as well, John. Is it stable on that riser? I'd be so fearful of a machine vibrating or walking off one of those things.

Just out of curiosity, how does the spin speed of this compare to that of the Westinghouse front loaders of the same vintage? I believe the spun at 500 something rpms. Also, how well does it handle out of balance loads.

The WP spins at 200 rpms.  If mechanically set properly, it's somewhat sensitive to off balanced loads and will stop and rebalance.  At least with the LK that lived next door to me did.

This machine has a great balance system. The machine will never walk if installed the right way.Even if it has a large heavy load.I have less than 1/4" on each side of the machine.More than enough room on each side.

Cycle Times

On our similar 1960 LKM Combo that we restored many years ago it took just under 30 minutes when set for a 10 minute wash to get to the dry cycle [ almost exactly the same as the GE combos that I have ]. The 4,500 watt booster water element in ours was very fast at getting the water temperature up to 140 F, I don't think it ever took as long as ten minutes extra and my water heater in the W Va house was never set any hotter than 130 F to began with, it really got the water steaming hot fast. The LKM we have is the model that can be used on either a 30 or 50 Amp 240 volt circuit, the dryers heater wattage is either 5600 watts like Johns WP machine or you can change a wire at the terminal block and use the third heater and bring the total dryer wattage up to 8400 watts.

The LKM Combo was the top rated electric combo in the 1960 CRs magazine in the only comprehensive tests that CRs ever did on combination washer-dryers, CRs also liked the gas versions of all the KMs and WP 33" Combos because of their fast drying performance and great washing ability.

On my LKM Combo it could easily still take over an hour to dry a 10 pound load of heavy cotton towels, in the 1960 CR test of my Combo they said with a 10lb load set for hot wash [ which automatically uses the water heater ] the machine would use over 7 KWHs of power to complete the full wash-dry cycle. Today at an average power cost of almost 15 cents per KWH today you would be looking at over one dollar to run the complete cycle.

Jon C the three belt drive system is very similar to what GE stated using in the late 1950s. It seems that WP used this drive system first and I am quite sure that nothing is interchangeable. Did you know that GE used two completely different three belt drive systems on their combos? on the first the motor did not reverse and the 2nd design that they introduced around 1964 the motor reversed to go from washing and rinsing to draining, spinning and drying, nothing was interchangeable between these two GE drive systems either.

Everybody has already said it, but the degree of effort, the attention to detail, and the accomplishment there is absolutely stunning. Sure its fun to start a restoration with a great platform that isn't far gone, but omg wow, you did a remarkable job. This is truly quite an accomplishment. I have done some fun restorations (and some not-so-fun) but never something this well done.

I've wondered if the "Filter Stream" washing/rinsing system could be feasible in today's HE front loaders.

Another phenomenal restore! Congrats!

Knowing your are a diehard Bendix man, would you be so kind to compare/contrast the washability between this WP and your Bendii?

Compare WP and Bendix wash

The Whirlpool washes very well. But I will always lean the Bendix way.

The Maytag Maxima 9000 has a recirculating system that operates for part of the cycle, but how long and how often I do not know since I've never used one in person.  Several in Europe over the years have had recirculating sprays.  Zanussi comes to mind, if I remember correctly.  There are probably others.  Some Frigiedaire and LG models also have a supplemental system that runs for a period of the cycle I believe.

Words really fail to capture the incredible beauty and labor of love bestowed on this beauty - although everyone has given it a good try.  I won't attempt to add to what has already been spoken, but to say this must be the 'ne plus ultra' of restorations.  Good show-!

Am curious, though, in Pic 8, there appears to be a white, porcelain, snap-in single receptacle inserted into the back inner wall of the cabinet.  If that's so, what is its use-?   Thanks.

JetStream

Congratulations John, one perfect restoration, every minute detail is perfect, it just looks NIB, is 10lb the maximum DRY Load?, if thats the case is the washload 20lb?

The power stream is very unique, although we have had Jetsystem washers here since the 80`s the jet are from the top directed onto the clothes, having used and seen the Whirlpool system has a wider jetstream and more volume,

If you spun the clothes in a spin dryer or 1010 unimatic how fast would the mega dry heater take? minutes?

Happy washing!!

10 Lb Cap.

10 Lbs, I am sure could be washed and dryed in this unit, having the 29'' cylinder. If a load of towels were spun out at 1010rpm.I would guess they would dry in about 30 min in this machine.Just a guess though.
