Is there anyone here who has any early-mid 1980s noisy dishwashers still functional? Do you have an iphone or something with a decent microphone? If so I wanted to make a special request, and ask if you could post a recording of this to youtube (or mp3).

Towards the mid-1980s my parents had expanded the kitchen, and probably installed either a Sears, Kenmore or GE dishwasher that year. If I had to guess it was probably sometime between 1984 and 1986. I don't believe it was Sears - I'm guessing it was probably GE. I recall it looking a lot like this one - it actually was about same color and button layout (as far as I can recall):

Back in the day, I had even made an audio recording of that to help me sleep and concentrate. I've tried since making other recordings, but it's not been the same.

It all began one late night doing my homework in the kitchen as a kid. In the background droned the motor loudly, while the water swished noisily. For me it was great. For most others it was a headache. :-) Any way, I'm one of the few who likes that kind of noise. :-) I've actually since tried to record and experiment with various water sounds in combination.

A friend of mine used to have a mid-eighties GE Talisman Royale dishwasher (with the vacuum fluorescent display) and it made a really strange whining noise. The whining was intermittent but appearing at steady intervals during the wash period. The noise was similar to a pump running dry but not exactly... It ran like that for years until he sold the house.

I don't have any recordings of that noise but I do remember it well!

Interesting :-)

Update: My mother believes it was a kenmore - so I guess we did get it from sears. I think this might be a picture of it (only it was more yellow than green):

I'm fairly certain it's either a 1985 model. It looks pretty much like that picture I posted in the first link above. If for some reason there is no kenmores from those years that look like that, then it must have been a GE.
