My sister asked me if I could identify this sound coming from a dishwasher. I've never heard anything like it. Do any of you guys have any ideas?

It's an Amana. The frequency of the sound has increased over time and it's no longer being used for fear of further damage. Don't know any more info.

It sounds like a solenoid is tripping off. But that's only my best guess. I would check the electrical connections in the unit to make sure they are all tight.

Solenoid

I agree with Whilcool it sound like a Solenoid tripping mine makes a sound a bit like this if it has not filled to the correct water level for the load it then stops and takes on more water

Could it be something in the grinding chamber? I remember years ago a glass broke in my dishwasher that had the PowerClean module and the grinding of the glass sounded like that for a load or two.  Not sure if the Amana can grind glass.

It is something in the grinder, she can chance it and keep running it and hope it grinds it up, but it sounds fairly metallic so it would be better to disassemble the pump and remove the offending item before the repair becomes a bigger problem and expense. On these DWs if it gets worse it will break the main impeller driver.

Thanks for the information fellas. I will pass it on. I think the grind chamber might be a good place to start and go from there.
