Was looking around YouTube and found an episode of The Price is Right from 1975. A woman won a dishwasher / range from Modern Maid. Never heard of one. I guess they didn't take off. It's shown at 11:00.

Jason, these were a niche product, but still popular in areas where space was at a premium.  typical D&M product.  If you believe the 8/19 broadcast date, that was my mom's 52nd b-day and I was getting ready to head back for my Jr. year in college.   It is very fun to watch the nice old appliances and hear what their retail prices were.   In today's dollars, that RadarRange is $2101.  The dishwasher/range is $3,716.

What a cool appliance!

I was such a fan of The Price Is Right and Let's Make A Deal in the early '70's.

Never seen the "Higher Dryer" (7:22). Didn't have to buy a dumb pedestal back then.

no more stooping or bending - why didn't this idea catch on? I didn't know they offered this in 1972.

.$2231 - she sure nailed the price on the VW.

..fun video, for sure - my parents were Price is Right fans

Were actually just their regular machines with added pedestals, sorry Louie.

Oh I know that John. I was referring to that the pedestal were built into the unit. No need to buy separately.

I loved the way Bob referred to all the female contestants as "girls". And those skirts on the models. A little shorter and you could see all the way to Munchkin Land.

John had a service call where somebody replaced the porcelain tank D&M dishwasher in one of those stack units with a plastic tank machine. After the first dinner, the tank top had melted. UH OH!

My best friends mother had one back in the early 70's. It was a new subdivision and I think they were part of the new home package you could have included. I thought it was cool. But if it were on the market today, no way since you basically have to turf the whole thing at once if something major happens.

Since the frame under the range allowed the dishwasher to stand on its own, failure of one part would not necessarily mean junking the whole thing. The range, while nothing great, had servicable components, although if the range had to be replaced, it would have to be with the same thing to allow space for the dishwasher. If the dishwasher had to be replaced with a new one today, it would have to be with a stainless steel tank model. Modern Maid ranges are a step above the offerings of the Sunray and Brown brands. GE even outsourced a cooktop with a griddle to Modern Maid in the late 70s or early 80s and, while they were hard to find, there were still some standards at GE about what they were willing to badge.

Around For a Long Time....

....Not everyone had one of these, but they were around for quite a number of years. They were a niche product that fulfilled a very specific space-saving need.

There's a funny story about one of these. I knew someone in Atlanta who bought a condo with one, and about a year after she moved in, one of us asked her how she liked her dishwasher. Her response? "I don't have a dishwasher!"

She didn't cook, you see, and so the range was just an object she saw without really seeing, if you know what I mean. She didn't have a clue that the lower part was a dishwasher instead of a lower oven.

Some people just aren't very conscious when it comes to stuff they're not interested in!

IIRC, John told me that you could use the metal color-panel from the D&M dishwasher to protect the top of the replacement plastic-tub dishwasher going in from the heat of the cooktop.
