I was wondering if perhaps the Maytag gurus here could help identify an old Maytag automatic washer I had in the '80's. I got it used around 1980. Unfortunately I gave it away in 1985 when I moved to a new house.

Description: All white, with single dial in the middle. The contours of the machine were rounded - not square as in the A606. As I recall, the sides of the machine were rounded, as well as the corners on control panel.

While I had it, the motor broke down, but replacing it was very easy, just tilted the machine back, unbolted the old motor, bolted in the new motor. I kept it in the detached garage where it only had cold water supply. The washing wasn't all that great but it still beat the laundromat. After a while it started putting gray/brown spots on whites. I figured it had a tranny leak, but perhaps it was just mold.

My next house had a Whirlpool Belt Drive (circa 1983) and at the time I didn't want to store the Maytag, so it went to charity. But I haven't seen another one since.

Any ideas? Any photos?

Hi, this describes many models from the late fifties to the early sixties. If you go to "restorations" on the home page, click on the Lady Kenmore restoration, go to photo #2, you will see in the background what I believe is your model. I have a 142 from 1961, still purring like a kitten. And it washes fabulously, and so gently. Very efficient with water too, considering other machines at the time.

Bobby,

Thanks! That's getting closer to what I remember, although the one I had didn't have the chrome strip on the front panel (that I recall). I think the control panel was more rounded, also, but my memory of that is more hazy.

Of course I regret having parted with that particular washer. Someone got a real classic. Cosmetically it was in mint condition, inside and out. It did seem to wash gently, as well. Not super capacity, of course, but enough for a single guy.

Hi suds!
Did the control panel look shorter and squattier? If it did, then it was a later model (early sixties). I've seen them in the collections, I'll browse and let you knwo where to look. Good to talk to you.

Hey suds, go to "collections", the second one down is Greg Gansky1 collection in Omaha. Go to photo #8. Is that your Maytag? If not, I'm stumped!

Bobby,

Thanks!

That looks more familiar... although I do not remember a chrome strip across the front of the machine. The big center dial and the mid-level pushbuttons do look familiar. Not sure about the toe kick at the front. The one I had was very plain. It may have even had a black agitator... hazy on that. The tub was a dark speckled gray, as I recall. Last time I saw it was about 20 years ago... but I think we're getting warmer!

Hi suds,
yours was probably a model 125 or 126. Does anyone in the group have photos or advert pics? The chrome strip my have been removed at some time and not replaced, and the toekicks were straight and very plain! Agitator would absolutely have been black bakelite, with or without a stainless steel lint filter, with a fabric softener cup inside. Sounding familiar? The buttons and dial knob would have been grey with white writing.

Bobby,

The gray/white dial sounds vaguely familiar. As I recall there was no lint filter or fabric softener cup.

I know when I bought the washer, the seller sort of hesitated as I loaded into a truck, and indicated it may have been something special. But it was around 1980 and I had no idea that anyone collected old washers. I do remember I liked the simple, clean lines of the thing. Reminded me of an old GE fridge.

Suds,
It's a shame you parted with it. Old Maytags are fabulous machines, and ironically, they didnt change much mechanically until the late 80's. My grandmother's 1961 model 142 is a sacred cow to me, as is my A606 and two A608's. Keep your eyes open for an oldie. They are just fantastic, and every bit nostalgic!

Bobby,

Yes, I do regret parting with it. But I was moving, and my next place already had a bigger, "better" belt drive Whirlpool (circa 1983). Sadly, I still hadn't realized the charm and value of these machines, and I donated the Whirlpool when I moved yet again seven years ago. I thought the '78 GE Filter-Flo in the next house would be better. I was wrong :-). Now it's sitting in the garage, minus its matching dryer, which I donated along with the WP to charity. In its place sits a Neptune set, which works very well.

I do have a line on what looks like a 70's white A?06 with bluish control panel trim. I'm thinking it would be nice next to the GE in the garage... and partial atonement for my parting with its ancestor. I really don't have the room for another washer, but I think I can jettison a couple of stoves to make room.

Suds,
funny, I have my grandmother's harvest gold gas GE dryer. It is from 1978 or 79, can't remember. She got it when she retired from GE after 30 years. The matching washer was good compared to today's machines, but we always had trouble with the timer. Needless to say, I found a great Maytag A606 to replace the washer. I fixed the timer, my grandmother gave the washer to my aunt, who left it behind when she moved. The GE dryer is massive, uses 30,000 btu's of gas, the SUV of dryers. I still have it, but eventually I found the match to the A606, and the GE is sitting idle. How are the Neptunes? I bet if you got a really good set of A608s you would dump the Neptunes in a heartbeat. If you ever find a Maytag dryer with elecronic control, you will never use anything but!

Bobby...

The matching GE Filter-flo dryer was electric, which is the main reason why I took it out of the house. I replaced it with a White-Westinghouse gas dryer that I had already. Nobody here believes me, but it was a very similar design to the GE dryer - the lint filters were interchangeable.

Anyway, I already have a Maytag dryer with electronic controls... it says "Neptune" on it :-). The washer is going just fine... I wouldn't replace it with an agitator, but I do like the sight and sound of an old top loader.

Suds,
I believe you about the WW and GE dryers-the very same basic idea, although I don't know what the gas BTU difference may have been. But Neptune and Electronic Contol in the same sentence gives me the willies! :.)
