I'd not heard of that website before, Alexander. Thanks for the link! I'm going to spend some time over coffee checking out reviews on other washers.

OK, down to business:

1. LID WON'T STAY UP: I read that the first run of Immersion Care washers has had many problems with the lid's spring system. Right on cue, mine snapped last week. If I was very careful, I could get the lid to stay up, but as stated in the review, the slightest nudge would cause it to come crashing down. The local dealer visited the next day and fixed the problem (no charge, of course). When working properly, the lid stays up securely. It has never come down on my head, and I've washed at least 70 loads. The spring system in the lid of the tested machine was obviously broken.

2. AWKWARD CONTROL PADS: It takes a firm press of the "bubble pads" to make your selections, and compared to the luxurious glass-like touch controls on my LG dishwasher, they do feel cheap. The review mentions a start button. Mine doesn't have one. After selecting the cycle, you press the dial. Simple and intuitive.

3. CAPACITY: Welcome back to the 1960s! It falls short of the capacity available in other impeller-based top-loaders. LG's top-of-the-line machine has a 4.7 cubic ft. tub; the Immersion Care a 3.4 cu. ft. tub. As mentioned elsewhere, it's the same tub used in the previous agitator-based model. Electrolux obviously wanted to keep manufacturing / retooling costs down by making as few alterations to the previous machine as possible.

4. ROUGH ON DELICATE FABRICS: As noted in Consumer Reports' tests, the machine can be rough on fabrics when choosing the Stain Treat option. On my washer, the cycle is 89 minutes long (paired with the Normal cycle), about 60 of which is agitation. CR noted an even longer cycle time of 110 minutes. Both this review and CR's admitted it cleaned their test loads very well. In the real world, one wouldn't wash delicate fabrics on the Heavy Duty cycle with the heaviest soil option selected. The Delicate cycle handles fabrics with kid gloves. I've seen no undue wear on loads of dress shirts or bed linens washed using the 58-minute default Normal cycle; but as shown in John's (combo52) tests, heavily soiled loads won't be completely cleaned unless you add a substantial amount of agitation time.

5. WATER EFFICIENCY: If you select the MAX water level and a deep rinse (by using the Fabric Softener option) you're using as much water as a traditional top-loader. Definitely not as frugal with water as other impeller-based top-loaders. I always use the default 4 spray rinses (plus an extra spray rinse for heavily-soiled or large, heavy loads such as bath linens) and have found it removes more detergent than a single deep rinse. Annoyingly, there isn't a full speed first spin---even when you select a deep rinse.

6. SPIN: While I wouldn't say clothes are "sopping wet" at the end of the cycle, this machine spins at speeds which are not up to today's standards. If you're used to using a vintage belt-drive Kenmore / Whirlpool, you'll wonder what all the fuss is about. If you're used to using a Unimatic or a modern front-loader, you'll definitely notice that loads of heavy fabrics (jeans; bath linens) contain substantially more water at the end of the cycle. Big loads of towels take 25 minutes longer to dry compared to when they are spun at 1300 rpm in my 2010 Frigidaire front-loader.

It doesn't sound like you are very happy with this machine at all.

I've never really been a big fan of impeller style machines, unless you count the older style twin tubs that had a large "knobby" impeller.

LG did have the right idea when it came to the "waveforce" action, something to make up for the shortcomings of an impeller...

This, like any other site or CR, all talk about how HE a machine can be.....rarely do they talk about real everyday loads, and how effective machines are......nor is there a great mention of contacting consumers who have purchased one of these machines, and what their views are of them, BUT we do see a lot of complaints on places like YouTube....

and yet, they think they know what consumers want!

maybe someone should give them a clue to check out YouTube...or provide for public opinion once they own one of these....they claim to do surveys and responses on machines, in all my life, I have never seen or been asked to answer one....

I wrote a review of my Frigilux FL washer and dryer on epinions.com. There are more reviews of new appliances on there as well. This was my guide in purchasing the W/D. I didn't think paying for CR was okay.
Cheers
