Well I have finally joined the Servis Quartz club with my Quartz Plus 6035 which I picked up last week. Had a right rigmarole getting it as it was near Manchester so I arranged for a courier to collect and deliver which turned into a right farce (don't use Parcel Monkey) so ended up doing a round trip myself although was staying in Cambridge so a little bit shorter than if I'd been at home. Still I'm really pleased I got it.

Cosmetically its not too bad - there is a small bit of rust at the bottom and a few scratches. However, I think the bearing is on its way out as there is a hot metal/burning smell after a while when I have run the spin and the drum comes to a stop very quickly. It doesn't seem to be too noisy though so it might be that the bearing has dried out as not sure when the machine was last used - you should see the powder drawer! There is some staining on the outer tub. This might be the same issue that Chris (Aquarius8000) has with his 3305. I ran a test rinse the other night and there is a leak at the front inside the machine and then also from the door when it started its distribute and pump out so a new door seal is needed as well.

I've never attempted a drum bearing replacement before so was wondering if anyone out there has and might have some information especially any service information for the Quartz regarding part numbers etc. I have seen the bearing kits and door seals for sale but not sure about the drum seals. I'm going to have a proper look at the machine over the weekend.

In the meantime here are a few pics to enjoy
Cheers
Steve

Congratulations!

I love this style of Servis Quartz with the panel door and piano key buttons. Thank you for taking the back panel off so that we can see the internals. The motor is obviously a GEC/Hotpoint product. The bearing change procedure is also the same easy procedure as Hotpoint's. You take cabinet off (I don't think the front panel comes off these). Take the front of the tub off, take inner drum out and replace bearings.

James.

Congratulations Steve on obtaining another classic, That staining doesnt look bad at all for a 28yr old machine, the tubs too tend to be stiff, they dont freewheel, is there any up and down play in the drum? and how does it sound on spin? does it have a lot of vibrations? The burning smell could be a rubbing belt thats sat too long, or see what state the capacitor is in...

Parts are still available and you shouldnt have too much trouble when you need spares, the fabric dispenser looks like it had olf "Comfort" in it by the colour, you should scrape it out and keep it ...ha ha

These are great washers with heavy duty circuit boards and you dont see many washers with the "Computer Ribbon"....simple and built to last

heres my dads daily drivers still purring along!!

Hi James. Thanks - I love the styling of these too and the circuit board is stamped as 1988 so I think they have aged very well and still look the business. You are right, the front does not come off so I guess the whole tub would have to come off but..........

Hi Mike. It turns out that it was some form of Ariel gel with black mould under it which someone must have popped in by accident. It certainly wasn't gel like scraping it out - yuk. Your Dad's machines look like they are doing their first ever wash!!

Anyway, I've had a good play about today and I think the bearing is ok. I took the belt off to see if there was any play and it seems fine. There is a slight squeak when the drum stops but nothing to worry about. I ran it back on a fast spin and the smell is actually coming from the vent from the soap dispenser so it might be that there is a build up of gel in the machine if it had always done low temperature washes. A good old hot wash and clean out might sort it out. However, I am still going to have to open up the tub as the seal has gone at the front which is where the leak is coming from. Will be a good opportunity to make sure it is clean.

Any idea what the tub gasket and door seal part numbers are? I haven't seen any that match my model but I'm assuming any of the full panel door models will have the same parts! I couldn't see how the door seal is released from the front either - the chrome ring looks like it has to come off but I'm not sure how.

I'm dying to get it up and running again so fingers crossed I don't contract anything from that soap drawer lol
Cheers
Steve

Great machine Steve.

Congratulations on acquiring it and am sure you will get it back into top form.

Standard door seals as far as I know that applies across the piano key machines and the follow on Sapphire models. Its quite possible and highly probable that the door seal is the same as that fitted to the slimlines too as, although the cabinet changed, mechanically there was litte changed from the previous slimline series.

I parted out a very work weary Sapphire, for spares for my grandmas's machine - I fathomed how you got the door seal off, but can't for the life of me remember how its done. Miiikkkkkkkeeeeeeeeee! How do you do it? :-)

Did these Servis use high water levels on rinses? Is this model called 'Spectrum' by any chance as it is the same an old friend use to have. Brilliant machines if only you could still buy them today.

At 100 litres per cycle, they most certainly would have used high level rinses....but then just about everything before about 1995 did.

Hi Paul

Thanks. I'm going to get hold of a door seal that list the 6000 series model numbers as I'm sure you are right. Fingers crossed but in the absence of part numbers I'll take a chance. Hopefully Mike can remember how to release the old one as I wouldn't want to ruin it.

Wish the same could be said for the hunt for the tub seal. I'm not going to give up looking yet but not found one so far. One way or another I will get this lovely old machine back up and running.

Hi Ben
Yes these machines have low medium and high water levels with normal programmes washing on medium and rinsing on high as you can see on mine and also Mikes photos. The half load button uses the low and medium levels.

Hi Chris
You definitely don't get high levels now! I've got a load of towels in my smeg at the moment and its struggling to get the foam out so I've had to give it an extra one! No sign of the water just suds :( another good reason to get the quartz back into action

Well I've had a chance for a good fiddle over the weekend and managed to work out how the chrome band comes off - just a little clip at the bottom that you have to tease off and then the band releases.

Now the bad news. The leak is coming from the lower part of the outer tub from the joint between the tub and front cover. I managed to get the tub cover off without having to take the whole shell off the machine. I thought the seal hadn't been fitted properly so cleaned it all up and positioned it fully, reassembled and tested but it leaked again!! I guess if worst comes to worst then I can apply sealant but would rather avoid this but I haven't been able to find a replacement seal.

Paul - would you happen to have one of your famous spreadsheets showing all the quartz range model numbers as well as the Electra and Hitachi equivalents? Fingers crossed I might be lucky with the additional info. Here's a picture of the tub front and seal

Hi Steve, good to see you got the band off, the only model I have that I have seen that band on is a later Spectrum washer dryer, the set above is an early release, whats the serial number of yours, yes to prise off use a thin flat driver or knife....there are two types of gaskets later ones with the chevron drums had a lip nub at the top, think these are the ones with the band!! Replacement door seals are still available 6033 series, look to see if yours is the later one with the lip!!

Sealant bands are available from e-spares etc, and also Band on a roll, which if you use it join the ends at the top of the tub with a little sealant...your washer looks in good nic , looking forward to seeing the vids!!

Ahhhh yes! I had forgotten the chevron drum and that it might require a different door seal. Nowt is ever simple is it! lol.

Hi Steve.
Yep - there is a spreadsheet for Servis, but its a bit of a mess due to Servis products being listed in Mk number order. As such, the Quartz models are dotted around the spreadsheet and it would be difficult to upload here.

So, next best thing - a list of Quartz models only:

Mk600 - original slimline 'Quartz'
Mk601 - electrically upgraded slimline 'Quartz 601'
Model 6009 - slimline 'Quartz 850'
Model 6013 - slimline 'Quartz 1000'
Model 6015 - slimline 'Laser Quartz' (Comet exclusive)
Model 6025 - slimline 'Starlight'
Model 6027 - final slimline 'Quartz 1000 de luxe'

Model 6030 - original piano key 'Quartz Plus' light grey fascia - porthole door
Model 6031 - original piano key 'Quartz Plus' light grey fascia - semi integrated
Model 6032 - piano key 'Quartz Plus' dark grey fascia - semi integrated
Model 6033 - piano key 'Quartz Plus' dark grey fascia - porthole door
Model 6034 - piano key 'Quartz Plus' all white machine - porthole door
Model 6035 - piano key 'Quartz Plus' rich brown fascia - porthole door
Model 6036 - piano key 'Quartz Plus' rich brown fascia + almond bodyshell - porthole door

Things get a bit sketchy now:

Electra 6900E Microelectronic - slimline Quartz clone
Electra 6950E Microelectronic 900 - piano key Quartz clone
Electra 6950W Microelectronic 900 - as above, but white fascia
Electra 9900W Washer-Dryer 1300 - as above but a W/D

The Hitachi models were pure round door machines of a design that was expected to become the next generation of Servis machines.
Mike has a far better understanding of the Hitachi-Servis relationship than I have, with all my info derived from his knowledge and info banks. Will leave it to Mike to explain this range.

The above are all the Quartz models, of the traditional style bodyshells, that are curretly known of. Surprisingly there were quite a few.

Paul

Hi Mike

Thanks for the info. That does look like the right door seal as the machine does have a chevron drum. The chrome band is held together with a small clip at the bottom. There is a small hole either side of this and you basically pull them towards each other which releases the clip and then you can remove the band and then the seal. Will give the sealant band a go as well as would rather keep it so I can take it apart easily in future if I need too.

Can you date the machine with the serial number? Yep I'm looking forward to making some vids too!

Hi Paul

I knew I could depend on you to have the list. Very helpful. General service information for Servis seems very thin on the ground considering their nationwide network. I guess there were a lot of disgruntled engineers at the time they went under who probably ditched stuff. Fingers crossed there is some stuff out there that might surface.

Hopefully I can get on and get it up and running again soon as a treat to myself for my birthday :))

Tub seal

ozzie908's profile picture
Hello Steve

As you are having bother finding the seal for the Servis drum try locating one for a Hoover instead as they are of a similar ilk it may be a little too big but you can trim it. If memory serves me well its just triangular shaped foam that compresses around the edge thus sealing the tub hope this helps?

Steve!

Steve! Beautiful washer! Love it! Sadly my Servis 3305 needs a pressure switch pipe as that and the seal are causing a very helpful flood in the garage. So fingers crossed, there won't be anything more leaking so I can switch the 3305 with the WM64. I'll replace it tomorrow, too tired lol and hopefully swap them on Sunday evening. I can't get the front retaining band on, it's such a stupid design, I've broken a few tools trying to put it on, but then decided to just take it off and leave it off lol! It doesn't leak from the seal, the only problem now is the pressure tube. Got a few spare from Hotpoint WMA/WT machines, hopefully that'll work.

The 9605 will hopefully be going to LavamatJon soon, we're on the stupid expensive water meter. And I'm not a fan of it anymore.

Hope this goes okay, I've never attempted a Servis bearing change and never wish to ! Aah well!

Will let you know how it goes!

Chris. :-)

Does it have to be a genuine seal?

I split a Hotpoint tub and that has a plain black foam seal which you could use on the rear of the Servis it may be a little long but you can cut it and ensure the joins at the top !

Hi Chris and Steve

I would also advise leaving the outer clamp band off, some going on 20 years ago. I changed the door boot on one of these and ended up in casualty, as a result of trying to get that steel band back on. I almost had the thing on with the aid of some pipe grips, they slipped and blood everywhere, caught the side of my eyebrow.

The clamp was left off and it went on to work perfectly for many years, I've learnt my lesson and try to go about these sorts of jobs with a little more skill and a bit less force.

Great all these Servis machines being restored at the moment.

Mathew

Good news folks. I have located a tub seal which is on its way along with a set of new wheels as the original ones are mashed up so perseverance pays off sometimes. Can't wait to get it up and running and thanks all for the advice and information.

Hey Peter. Thanks for the photo of the dryer and yes I would love to take it and do it up so will message to arrange. How long have you had it?

Hi Chris - good luck getting your machine up and running I'm sure you'll manage. I managed to get the front band back on on my machine but that is with the existing door seal so might be another story with the new seal.

Noted Mathew. I am always injuring myself but normally don't notice until I see blood on something. I did manage to almost pierce my cheek with a screwdriver once over but generally I'm more worried about damaging the machine and scratching it or worse!

Anyway, I'll let you know how I get on and hopefully it will be up and running in a couple of weeks town and have a nice matching dryer to boot and I'll have to get some videos to share.

Well done Steve, look forward to seeing it up and running soon, funny thing that Mathew reminded me , have seen more Servis without the band, the metal onew didnt last long before they made them white plastic - the compact and slimline range never had them on...

Yes Servis wheels tended to Flatten or split and come off over time, make sure you watch the base edges nr the wheels as they tend to dig the floor if tilted!!

Been doing some more research and you have an even rarer model, look at the serial number and you will see the "R" on the plate - it stands for factory renovation, these where offered to customers by the engineers or Servis themselves for a reduced complimentary price to wxisting customers - usually test models rejunvenated for resale!!

Update

sesteve's profile picture
Well the parts arrived and after a bit of a struggle I fitted the new tub and door seals and straightened the door. I couldn't get the band back on properly and after Mathew's tale I wasn't going to end up in A&E!! Will do a temporary fix with some wire.

At first bingo - no leaks - well from the front!! There was a little bit of water at the rear at the end so need to investigate further. I am more convinced that the bearing and seal has gone though. If I turn the drum by hand there is a rubbery squeaking noise and it is rumbling on spin. So I guess that will be the next job but I'm happy it's useable and working once again for the minute especially as its a rare one - cheers Mike for that.

Here it is doing its first wash in my place. Will have to do some videos soon too.

Whilst on eBay the other day I noticed this Servis Quartz which I'd never seen or knew existed. I guess it was a crossover model from the time Servis went bust using up all the old parts! Anyone got any more information on this? It's ended on eBay but I've put the link in.

Ps thanks Chris for the courier recommendation. Have had to get my credit card company to claim back against Parcelmonkey so a bit of a lesson there!

Arghhhh

sesteve's profile picture
I know everyone is probably bored to bits with this but I thought I'd do a final update on this until I get it sorted and then I'll do a new thread. Anyway I decided to investigate the leak during a wash to see what was going on ready to video it as discussed. The leak is coming from the hole by the bearing which indicates that as I've suspected, the bearing seal has gone which is why it is so noisy on spin. So as predicted, I will have to do a bearing change. Have just accepted an offer in the house so that might have to wait until I've moved - and hopefully will get a workshop!!

However, I could hear another noise while it was washing and it has turned out that one of the spokes on the pulley has fractured :( It's such a fine fracture I hadn't noticed it before. Anyway, I've found a replacement one but it is £50. Is it possible to repair this or will I have to fork out?

sorry to say but you could try drilling it and screwing a plate to it.

I would have thought you can find a replacement for a lot less than £50 !! Whats it made of ??? lol

Do you have any other pulleys around? Try a Hoover 1100 I think they are a similar size.

Good luck with the move hope it goes ok

great thread about the Quartz, nice 2 see that another 1 has been saved. I grew up with 1 4 many years as an Electra Microelectronic 900 6950E which was a great machine with it's nice water levels and spin-drains, I know 1 came up on eBay in 2007 but sadly I didn't buy it back :( but I'll post a link about it under my old name platinum6.

Btw, the Antonio Merloni made Quartz's were made but weren't as popular as it's British made counterparts, I have a Servis brochure dated September 1994 with that model in it and we're produced from about 1991 til 1995/96, which I think is about right 4 those rare models. :)

Hi Austin

I did think about putting a plate on it but was worried it might upset the balance and the metal is deceptively thin. Wasn't sure if there is some kind of glue for metal that might work. I did also think about another make of pulley. Do the Hoover ones have the same fixing?

Hi Alan. Would love to see that brochure if you are able to upload. The Electra version of the Quartz is really smart. Are there any AW members with one I wonder?

Weren't Servis completely taken over by Merloni in 1991 and therefore production of the original Quartz ceased and was replaced with the 4 paddle drum version?

This was the first crossover model as a merloni machine, would like to know if the programmer is the same as the UK Quartz, did enquire about this washer but had gone already..
SESeve, did you get this machine?

Steve, have never seen a cracked drum pulley on any Servis, lots on Hotpoint, I'm sure your local repair shop might have spares, will check my local, as it happens Dads Quartz is now needing a door boot, so will stick a set of brushes in and do the pump at the same time, it does still have the SpinCare drum...Also, keep adding to this thread with your updates, it will build a great store of information!!

Hi Alan, I wasnt aware Servis did spin drains, do you mean the distribution drain? or did the Electra have different programming!!

Aquacycle, yes, it was replaced with the AM built models by the time they took over Servis, but they weren't strong sellers.

chestermikeuk, yes, I did mean distribution-drains, all Quartz's would be programmed the same way. :)

Hi Mike

No I didn't go for it - it sold really quick under a buy it now I guess. Would love to see some more info on this model. Anyway, back to my quartz and I'm trying to source a replacement. I bought it from a house clearance place so it might have been them wheeling it in and out! Once I source one I will replace the bearing at the same time as I know it has definitely gone because........

I've bought another Quartz eek!

And the connection on the valve is blackened. Question is what has caused it? I'm guessing the solenoid has failed which has popped the triac. Not sure whether to try repairing the board myself if I can get the right components or whether it will need more specialist attention. Any advice ?

I'd swap the valve and the boards from the brown panelled Quartz into the grey panelled Quartz and just save the grey one. When I hear the word "Quartz" I think fondly of the grey one as they seem much more iconic than the brown one.

Steve,

If you ever have a spare, I'd pay good money to get hold of a SpinCare Drum.

The Quartz 6036G I've just bought off ZodaWash has a Chevron drum.

Steve's/ZodaWash's going to deliver the Quartz later this month to me.

Hi steve.

Been occupied with moving house the last couple of weeks and not really paid much attention to whats been going on in the world of vintage appliances.

Lovely to come on a catch up session and find that you have managed to acquire a 6030!
Of all the piano key machines Servis produced, I agree with James that the 6030 and its UBER RARE full panel door 6031 sibling have just that little bit extra over the other schemes.
I dont know what it is - perhaps its cause a family member had one? Who can say.

Either way, as you say yourself, you have a very clean example and I have everything crossed that you are able to get it re-energised successfully.

p.s beware Servis wheels!

Before stacking or wheeling a servis machine around your floor, check the condition of its wheels.

Our 3305 Electronic 1000 de luxe and 6025 Starlight have shed their rubber tyres and now run on 8 ice skate like plastic blades.
These blades cut up lino (as per mine and rob's experience with our 6025), scratch enamel lids and leave indentations in formica lids. Grrrrrrrr.

Just wanted to let you and any other servis owners know, who might not have noticed this and get a nasty shock as they wheel their machines around and leave track marks all over the shop.

Paul

I finally managed to spend a bit of time this weekend to play around with the Quartz machines in between selling the house and finding somewhere else to live - no joy yet - so I thought I'd take advantage while I can as everything is going to have to go into storage at this rate!!

First I have to agree with both James and Paul about the 6030 having the edge on the styling front and I'm glad I found this machine after finding the brochure I posted last year showing the 6030 and 6031 and matching dryers . However, I feel a sense of responsibility to the 6035 seeing as Mike pointed out its a bit special. Anyway, I'm waffling and currently neither are working properly despite my best efforts :( Too late on the wheels though Paul - I have tram lines on my hall floor so just as well I'm moving LOL

I managed to get hold of a power card and a Servis hot water valve so I set about fitting these. On power up - no display but the door solenoid and pump using cancel were working and nothing popped on the new board so some progress. I then went on to switch various parts between the two machines you can see the power card has been removed from the 6035 in the picture

This switching has revealed a few issues. Firstly, I put the new power card into the 6035. This allowed the machine to power up but the display just showed the bar to indicate the door was open even when the door was shut.

Next I put the control card from the 6030 into the 6035 with the 6035s original power card in - hope you are keeping up with this!! The display did not work but instantly the hot water valve was buzzing so I'm guessing there is something wrong with the 6030 control card that allowed its power card to get damaged from trying to operate the hot valve continuously as shown earlier with the burnt out triac - I guess the control card needs looking at.

Here are the two cards with the ICC card belonging from the 6030 - there's no obvious damage to the card.

So finally I put both the power card and control card from the 6035 into the 6030. This allowed me to power up the machine and I was able to do the customary H spin programme. That went well so tried a rinse and spin A programme. The machine started to fill but as soon as the low water level on the pressure switch made, the machine went into an F6 fault indicating something is up with the heater circuit. I tried agin on programme 2 and the same thing happened. I checked the pressure bottle just to be sure and that was fine.

Paul passed me o e technical information for the 600 series which includes modifications for the 6030 but I'm not sure if there were other wiring mods between this and the 6035. I ran out of time so options seem to be that
> there is a fault with the heater/cut out but it's not showing on a multimeter and also was not tripping out the electrics
> there is a fault with the pressure switch which may have something to do with the hot water valve operating
> there has been a wiring mod between the two models which is not obvious.

any suggestions out there for this? Here's a pic of the two in bits

I am thinking along the same lines Craig but I will try switching the pressure switch next time I get the chance to fiddle. The floor looks good but is a real bugger to keep clean even with a steam mop!! Mind you it has come in handy on the few occasions when the drain hose from various machines has slipped off the sink!

Ben - you are right there were spectrum models which I assume we're sold through specific outlets like the Laser models but I'm not sure. Perhaps one of the Servis experts (Mike and Paul) might be able to she'd some light on this :)

Quartz

Steve,

Which, in the pic above, is the left machine with the door fully open?
After the pressure vessel pipe split on the Sapphire, as Ian, Grandma's washer engineer showed me, I notice, looking at your pic above, the machine on the left looks exactly identical to the Sapphire's setup, part location wise, with the metal bar across the top from either side.

Btw, any Servis owners, what's the deal with these machines having them wretched "PITA" vents on the rear panel for? When the pressure vessel pipe'd split, it caused the Sapphire to overfill, thus ending up with water pouring out one of these said vents & causing a lovely lagoon of water over the garage floor, soaking everything in the streams path.
Also, what's with the necessity of having the inlets on the side of the back panel, instead of a simple, conventional machine like my Logic Premier?

Steve, Paul, Mike, I'm not sure if you're aware, but ZodaWash (Not to confuse Sesteve, with ZodaWash Steve), sold me his Quartz 6036G, which he posted on GumTree & Ebay, he kindly delivered it to my house, only being an hour from his place, on June 17th, so his Quartz's been rescued by a Servis enthusiast, who's now got, currently, 03 different models of Servis...

A 1982 Servis Quartz 04KG 1000RPM AutoWasher Mk600.
A 1983 Servis Quartz 04KG 1000RPM AutoWasher 6036G.
A 1989 Servis Sapphire AutoWash/Dry 04KG 1300RPM Washer Dryer 9635.

The Mk600 is ultimately destined for Aquarius8000's capable ownership, the Sapphire & Quartz 6036G will remain with me, once a reshuffle's complete, the Quartz will sit next to the Sapphire where my trusty Zanussi JetSytem WJD1667W currently resides, which's going to my Grandma, due to it being more suited to her needs than her current Ultima WD860, therefore making way for ZodaWash's Quartz.

Paul or Mike, maybe you could confirm the below thoughts/beliefs?

I noticed that, after Aquarius8000's acquisition of his Servis 3305, that the porthole is different to my Sapphire (Chris, I've borrowed one of your pics, for comparison only, hope you don't mind?), why has my Sapphire got a glass, Míele style porthole glass? Rather than the seemingly standard plastic, flat, porthole that the Mk600, Chris's 3305, & my new Quartz sport?
Was it to deflect the heat back into the drum/load? Rather than it being lost through the door glass & heat shield of the door? Don't forget, the Sapphire's a Washer Dryer, not an AutoWasher.

CJ

It has the door glass like that probably because of the dryer ducting, as mine isn't and yours is a washer dryer. I don't mind use of the pics BTW!

Your Assumptions

Chris, your assumptions're more than likely correct.
Tbh, I'm surprised, that with the amount of pilfering of parts from Hoover & Hotpoint, I don't know why, they didn't use the same door glass bowl as was used on the Logic Premier.

Update

sesteve's profile picture
I think I am finally getting to the bottom of the problem with the 6030. Having realised that I had only printed part of the service manual (Duh) the missing bit said that if F6 appears when the low level is reached points to an open circuit heater or short circuit heater triac.

With the help of a multi meter I have found that the thermal fuse that protects the plastic tub if the heater control goes haywire has failed. I have ordered a replacement so I have my fingers crossed that this will get the machine back up and running.

Austin - I will drop you an email tonight as I am sure that I will be able to make use of some of your stash!

Quite a simple little thing really! I have a feeling that this machine has suffered from a power surge which has popped various bits.

CJ - that one is the 6035. I have to say that both machines are pretty much identical inside - the 6035 has a metal counterweight on top and the heater protection is different but all else seems the same. The front metal strip is the cover from the pressure switch/water valves which I rested on top but there is a strap further back.

Vents

sesteve's profile picture
I'm not sure why these machines have 2 vents as you can see from the picture. The one on the hose from the dispenser has caused a few issues from me when I have used liquid (Method) detergent as when the water level starts to rise in the machine a substantial amount of foam came out the back and all over the floor!!

The side valve inlets were quite useful for some people especially if the machine needed to be accommodated under a shallow worktop as it meant the machine could go back to the wall as long as your plumbing was on the right side. The neighbour in our street has the 600 and the gap it was fitted in meant that the hoses had to be connected once the machine had been pushed back using the straight end as opposed to the elbow.

Shut off

sesteve's profile picture
CJ - Im not sure if the Sapphire would have the same interlocks but this part of the service manual suggests that the water should be shut off if there is no response from the pressure switch after a period of time. I guess this could still be long enough for water to escape.

"The power to valves is supplied via the empty contact of the high level switch. This means that the machine cannot fill above high level, barring switch failure. An electronic interlock limits the fill time from one level to the next to 3¼ minutes so that a switch failure would be detected and the power to the valves turned off."

Did yours switch off or did you have to intervene?

Hi Sesteve,

When the pressure vessel pipe'd split, it filled to about 3/4 up the door glass, before I caught it, & emptied it, but it'd been spewing water for probs 05 mints before I caught it.

Usually, it only just, covers the door seal below where the door porthole sits, when the door's shut.

When I've got the quartz from ZodaWash fully plumbed in, I'll take a photo of the H2O levels of both the Sapphire & the Quartz for you to see.

Btw, if you're on FB there're pics & full details of the crew on a group I've set up on there, if you're an FB member, let me know, I'll add you as a friend & then add you to the group if you'd like.

I hope to have the Quartz 6036G connected by the following wkd from now (20, 21st/07) (I've attached a pic of the crew for you, as of the 08th/07).

I am on Facebook so will send you a message. The line up looks great. I've just posted in shoppers square a Sapphire that is on eBay in great condition. I'd be tempted myself but all mine are going into storage as I'm about to move out but yet to find a new pad. Besides I think I need to concentrate on getting mine working.

I replaced the cut out and all seemed to be ok until it started flashing at F1 at the end of the cycle which means the thermistor circuit is faulty. I swapped the thermistors between the two machines but still no joy so will need to explore further at some point. Could be the wiring or the circuit board. At least I can do some washing in it but only at incoming water temperature.

I'll get there eventually - it's not going to defeat me!!

Seal

sesteve's profile picture
Hi Martin

Having now replaced one of these I would say that you could use any seal but generally a thinish one that you can trim to size. I used a Hoover one but it really is a bit too thick. You can't get them for the quartz series unfortunately

The proper way to do it is to remove the machine casing from the chassis so you get full access to the front. However, I managed by removing the door boot and laying the machine on its back. This allowed me to take the tub seal clips off. If you unscrew the soap dispenser drawer you can push it back enough to let you take the front of the tub out. Wrap the new seal on this and then reassemble in reverse.

Good luck
Steve :)

Hello came across this thread. Last year was at a friends house, and on the way north did pick up the M612. But sadly it blew a socket and melted plug as well. It was a lovely machine but had suffered a motor failure. It was owned by a lady in Manchester. But sadly she passed away, and house was taken over by her neighbour down stairs. He was going to let the house after refurbishing it.
My friend and I stripped it due to space and was going to cost too much to repair

Servis Quartz F6 Error

Hi found this thread after much searching. I tried to join the forum years ago but something went wrong with verification. This time everything went okay so here goes.

I have a Servis Quartz washer with the Spincare drum which I really want to keep hold of - I have fond memories of it... It was taken out of actiona few years ago with the F6 error which, thanks to this forum, I now know it points to an open circuit heater or bad triac. I believe the triac is on the power PCB but I havn't got much further than trying a simple test on the triacs.

I need some guidance and maybe a schematic if possible to get this up and running again. It does need some TLC but would be great to see it washing, spinning etc again!

Wow this thread has made me realise how time has flown past - still need to get my machines fully sorted but hopefully will get the chance soon. I will email you the service information I have - Its not greatly detailed but it might help you out. It could be the thermal fuse like it was on mine.

Good luck with it

Hello AW-enthousiasts.
Although I have visited this splendid website and forum many times in the past it has just occurred to me that it's high time to join in.
Also, I have a Quartz 6032 which I bought (new) in 1987 and would like to return to active service. It emigrated with me in 1995 and has been in (dry) storage since then. On / via your site I found a film of a 603x in operation and those sights and sounds made me feel rather as if I was slipping into a favourite jumper (hand-washed, of course).
So more news as the project (slowly) progresses (er, starts).

Actually, I'm not sure now if it's a 6032 or a 6033.
What is the definition of the terms 'semi-integrated' and 'porthole door'?
On my machine, the glass dome is fitted in a door-panel which is the full width of the cabinet.

M601 (metal tub) in Birmingham available to a new home

Hi Everyone,
I was stumbling about looking for information on the quartz when I stumbled across this forum. I've got a M601 (metal tub) in fairly good order looking for a new home, if anyone is interested. I've just put a new bearing in it, and was about to put it back into a rental property, but after finding this forum I thought you people might appreciate it better than my tenant's, who will try and put more than 4kg in it !

The good :-
Spin care drum
Fully working, doesn't trip out RCD etc.

The bad :-
After changing the bearing there is a small leak off the tub seal (it was quite rusty and a bit pitted where the back and tub joined - I could just slap sealant over it, but someone might prefer to be more 'original'. (leak is not ignorable, could not let it go through a cycle leaking that much)
There is a slight bit of variation in motor speed when turning the drum over - is fine and steady at full spin speed.
Rusty around detergent drawer.

....and you will curse me, but I broke another 601 for spares a few years ago (motor bearing died).... I retained some of the more useful bits such as the circuit boards - I can't recollect if they are buried in a box in a garage or if I can find them hiding somewhere - if I can find them they will go along with it.

I'm in Birmingham B23 - if anyone is interested then make me an offer.

Deconstruction/Don,

The Servis Quartz & Sapphires have what are known as 1/2 panel doors.

There were two varieties mainly, with the third being very rare:

01) 1/2 panel door with plastic porthole window with target pattern (AutoWashers).
02) 1/2 panel door with sloping glass porthole (Washer Dryers).
03) Décor full panel with 1/2 panel door with plastic porthole window with target pattern, behind outer door.

I've been lucky to own most variations of these machines, Sapphire AutoSelect 6065, Quartz 6104 & 6036G, Quartz Mk600, all autowashers & a Sapphire 9700 washer dryer etc, all since Oct 2011.

I still have in daily operation my Sapphire 9635 washer dryer, & its brother, the 9634, the only differences between model codes being cabinet & trim colours.

I believe the only Quartz model that featured a décor full panel door, concealing the 1/2 panel door behind, was a model 6032 (confirmed from my range brochure), I'll post snaps below of each machine I've had, and a Sapphire snap, showing the example of the 6032.

All Quartz's both 603- & Mk600 models were all 1000RPM spin machines with the exception of the 6104 which was a 1100RPM model.

Only selected Sapphire models had a 1300RPM spin speed, the AutoSelect 6065, AutoWash 6055, my ex 9700, now with a friend, & my two, the 9634/9635 were all 1300RPM.

There was an Electra badged Quartz style washer dryer. Snapped up by ChesterMikeUK (the #01 authority on Servis).

www.automaticwasher.org/TD/AWJPEG...

Anyway, I'll leave y'all for now with a selection of snaps of the machines I've had & the Sapphire equivalent style of the 6032.

Key of snaps as follows:

01/02) Quartz 6036G.
03) Quartz 6104.
04/05) Sapphire AutoSelect 6065.
06) Sapphire AutoSelect 6065/Sapphire 9635, showing door porthole variation.
07) Quartz Mk600.
08) Sapphires 9700/9635, set up for use (Original use set up).
09) Sapphire 9700.
10) Sapphire 9634 (Left), 9635 (Right).
11) Sapphire/9635 full décor door (NOT REAL, self edited version!).
12) Sapphire 9634/9635 1/2 décor door no porthole (NOT REAL, self edited version!).
13) Quartz 6032 (The REAL one).
14) Quartz 6030/6031 1/2 panel no porthole. ]
15) Quartz 6030/6031 1/2 panel with porthole.

(Stephen, hope you don't mind me borrowing a self edited copy of snaps 14/15 from your booklet?).

If any of this description is confusing, I'll apologise now!

If you wish the full table of Servis models for reference, I'm sure Mike will happily oblige and post a copy up for y'all.

CJ

Servis Quartz 600 door seal

My Mother-in-law has a Servis Quartz 600 washing machine made in 1983. The door seal has gone and as it is in a fitted kitchen, in a gap only 58.5 wide, we can not replace the machine and so far I have been unable to get hold of a new seal. The washing machine is in pristine condition apart from that and she is very keen to carry on using it. I would be very grateful if anyone can help

Thanks a lot.

Hi, your mother in law's kitchen won't have been the only kitchen built around a Servis 585mm cabinet I'm sure! Gaskets are still available, and pretty reasonably priced. I've got 2 of these machines, just stripped and rebuilt one just last week and thats had a new gasket too. Attached is a link to one on eBay, give us a shout if you have any problems with it in the future! (Or if its ever up for disposal!)

Hope this helps!

6033G

deconstruction's profile picture
At very long last I have started to investigate my 6033G.
To begin with thank you to those who have posted tips and information.
Today I dug the machine out and manoeuvred it into a suitable position. After a quick look around for broken / bare wires I provided power and saw the comforting LED in the display.
Then opened the front door and observed that the door seal has dematerialised so that's the first problem - I imagine that this will be very difficult to find :(
Around at the back with all the covers off, I found that a little rubber hose which runs from a round thing (which has electrical connections) near the top of the cabinet then down and around the back of the drum case to a little plastic 'bottle' ( a water-level sensor?) has corroded almost completely where it fits onto the 'bottle' - a very simple fix :)
Apart from that the only other visible issue is the broken, flattened and jammed wheels - but I can deal with them.

So the first challenge is the door seal. Anyone, any tips? :)

Hi Don, Great news on getting stuck into your Servis Quartz, the gasket is still just available, grab stocks while you can...heres the link Chris provided earlier.
The thin tube from the pressure pot to the pressure switch should be an easy fix, car spares shop would be a first port of call...

Let us know how you get on...

I think I forgot to actually post a previous message after previewing it :) so here it is (again).

Thank you for the link, I have sent chestermike a message on EBAY.

The small-bore rubber tube has been replaced (old cars are one of my other hobbies).
And I've cleaned out some dust and spiders' webs. There are a few patches of rust on the inside of the cabinet and some rusty threads but I will wait until I'm sure the machine works before dismantling it to recondition these.
The drain-pump seemed a bit grimy so I took it out and cleaned it up a bit. I suppose I could test that on the workbench.

So that broken rubber pipe is part of a pressure-sensing system? What might be the effect of the system being open?

Are any technical drawings and manuals of the 603x available?

Return Of The Quartz

deconstruction's profile picture
The project continues.
The little rubber-pipe has been replaced and I managed to obtain a new door-seal and fit it (!@#).
After putting some water into the drum through the soap-tray to check for leaks there was a dribble from the seal at the drum joint but tightening the retaining-band stopped it.
With no other problems apparent, I decided to risk a programme.
Chose E (30° 'quickwash') and started it.
Familiar, comforting sights and sounds: both water valves opened and the machine filled, the drum turned now and again, no leaks or strange noises but after about 1 minute, an error-code - alternating F and 4 - appeared in the display and the action stopped.
Drained the machine manually by lowering the drain hose.
So, questions:
1. what does F4 mean?
2. does anyone have a list of all error-codes?
3. is it possible to get the machine to empty using the keys? i.e. get the drain-pump to run
Of course slightly disappointing but realistically it's still progress because this 6033 hasn't been run since 1997!
As always grateful for any advice :)

Return...

deconstruction's profile picture

Just found some codes online; could someone confirm if these are correct for the 6033?

F1
Water heating error detected
For this error code you need to check both the water heater or element and thermistor, the washing machine is reporting a fault on the heating circuit with this fault code but it is not capable of identifying exactly where the fault actually lies.

  • Check water heating element
  • Check heater for contunuity
  • Check thermistor or temperature sensor
  • Check the thermistor resistance
  • Check wiring to water heating element
  • Check connections to water heating element and temperature sensor

F2
Water fill time out
The washing machine has failed to fill with water in a reasonable time.

  • Check water supply is on, clear and not frozen
  • Check the air chamber and pressure sensor hose for blockages
  • Check water inlet valve
  • Check wiring to water inlet valve
  • Check connections to water inlet valve
  • Check the main control PCB

F3
Not drained in time allowed

Washing machine fails to drain water

  • Check that filter is not blocked or obstructed
  • Check drain hose is clear of any blockage or obstruction
  • Check wiring to drain pump
  • Check drain pump is not defective
  • Check level sensor or switch
  • Check wiring to level sensor

F4
Washing machine has detected an overfill situation
This error code can be caused by overfoaming which is a result of overloading (see this article) or by overdosing or, incorrect detergent as the pressure sensor will falsely read that there is too much water in the washing machine, although this was very rare in these old Servis washing machines.

  • Check the pressure sensor and that the machine has not actually overfilled with water.
  • Check for overfoaming or over soaping
  • Check the air chamber and the pressure switch hose
  • Check water level sensor
  • Check wiring to water pressure sensor
  • Check connections to water level sensor
  • Check main electronic controller

F5
Water heater fault
This fault code tells you that the washing machine has detected an error with the wash heating element.

  • Check water heating element

Servis Quartz-Error F4

Hi deconstruction, just found your post. The error code F4 almost certainly relates to a motor/tacho fault.First thing to do is remove the "power-board", the PCB down beside the motor & check that the motor hasn't blown the board, which is normally visually evident, the large connector at the bottom of the PCB as you look at it.
If you're lucky, it might just be a case of the motor brushes/carbone needing replaced. If the PCB/board is blown, I can perhaps help with that if you're of a mind to fix it.Personally, I'm looking for a motor for a servis Quartz 6035, if you've 1 of those kickin' about.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I do not have a motor for 6035, sorry.

I will have a look at the PCB and report back here.
Do you mean the brushes of the main motor? It does revolve the drum a little, without unpleasant noises.

What kind of damage should I be looking for?

Next job, examine the carbon brushes in the motor.

I removed the motor to examine the brushes.
Each brush has at least 5mm of the carbon rod protruding and the spring loading works. No sign of burning.

They're normally 20-30 mm so they've worn out I think

Then even if they still work I should replace them.
These - from gcr-suffolk and ebay - look right but Servis is not listed, only Creda, Electra, Gala, Hotpoint etc.
Can anyone confirm if these are suitable or, if not, a part reference number for the correct carbons?

I'm not 100% certain but I think these are GEC motors so they should fit - I don't have a parts list to check but you can find these brushes quite readily and cheaply on Ebay so just check around for cost as they are quite universal. I think even though I have had mine to bits (as above) I never looked at the motor as that seemed to be the bit that was working fine!

The power board looks fine and F$ is a motor tacho fault - motor too fast or too slow so the brushes are a good place to start along with the tacho coil at the back of the motor.

Take a couple more pictures of the motor if you get the chance.

Thanks for the advice.
I decided to risk a pair of carbons offered on EBAY (not expensive).
And one evening this week I might manage a photograph of the motor (the machine is now wrapped up again so that birds do not get into it laughing).

6033G motor

deconstruction's profile picture
So, after a pause of a few weeks I have had another go at the machine.
The new carbons seem not to fit. The basic design / form is very similar but there are several detail differences. At first I thought that it was only an updated design but there is a problem: they slide into the motor in the same way but not quite far enough to allow the retaining wings to clear the body of the motor and so they will not lock into place.
Are there many different types of carbon?
Is cleaning the armature essential?
I attach photographs of the motor sticker and of the original (black) and new (grey-blue) carbons.

As luck would have it I have my quartz stripped down as I fixed the heating issue but there was a leak and the bearing seal needed replacing. I will update with some pictures on all that when it's back together and working.

I've taken the motor off today to look at the brushes and they are worn right down so am replacing them. My new ones are held together with an elastic band to keep the carbon in its holder but the ones you have have a small tab that you need to bend to release the brush from its holder so it pops out and ends up springing in and out. They should fit as it's a basic GEC motor the same as the hotpoints and those are the right brushes. I've had to push quite firmly to get them to lock in place - much easier with the motor out of the machine.

I would give it another try and see as I can't see from your pictures why they wouldn't fit.

Thank you for the advice.

It occurred to me later that the problem seems only to be that the new brush-unit will not lock in place. This is caused by the length of the wings.

Otherwise the fit seems to be good (and all I have to do is push in the little tab to allow the carbon rod to spring out onto the armature).

So perhaps I should trim the wings... surprised
