While searching Craiglists hunting for a dryer for a friend last week. I noticed in one listing a unidentified '12 series Maytag in the corner in the photo. The seller replied the dryer had been claimed but I could have the washer no charge as it wasn't working well.

I get to the house today and the seller leads me to a super nice condition Maytag A712, with the owners manual, dated July 1988 from Cooks Appliance (probably out of business now).

He said the water wasn't draining during the spin, the motor glide springs felt weak to me.

Moral of the story: An easily repairable TOL Maytag, and a late model 29" Whirlpool gas dryer ($100-also very good condition) get dumped for a $1500 LG front loader pair...

You should be ashamed of yourself taking advantage of another mans ignorance that way................NOT! Great save! You'll have to keep us posted on the repair. It'll be interesting to see how much it costs you to get them going versus the $1500 he spent on the new machines.

Give it some time and those owners will regret that decision. Their ignorance is your blessing.

Without my asking, the husband mentioned the new machines didn't seem as well built as the Maytag, but the new FL's were arriving the next day so I didn't want depress him explaining it was probably a simple repair.

The drain hose had a big kink as well, so that wasn't helping matters either.

I think you found the problem, I have never seen motor springs that got weak, steel is much more durable than that, the reason that MT included new springs with the carnage rollers that would break on the earlier models was that they had changed to larger springs and they wanted them upgraded when the earlier machines were repaired.
