Hi Craig, well what a little beauty you have there, February 1979 is the introduction date of this model although it is somewhat of an puzzle as the S usually stood for Stainless Steel drum, I wonder if this is one of the first changeover models or they had run out of older fascias, very interesting.

The spin speed should be 850rpm for cottons and 460 for delicates, is the door release button on the rhs of the timer?, a very sturdy machine with all that cast iron and vitreous enamel...will check the carbon brushes book in the morning, still available so we look forward to seeing it in action!!

Cheers, Mike

The motor on it looks so much like an early Hoover one it's huge. The weight/feel & the build quality of the enamel drum is just so unreal unlike any other drum i have ever come across. I'm well happy & excited about this classic machine.

Would have loved having you at work this afternoon Mike when we had a telephone call from a customer saying that they had a 30 year old Hotpoint Autowasher that needed to be replaced but it was only 22" wide. ( A 30 year old Hotpoint @ 22" wide) That journey to the customers house was mixed with me not getting my hopes up but with a tad of excitment, i could not believe my eyes when we walked into the utility room only to find a bloody rare classic compact Servis Autowasher. Put it this way they was far more care & attention made getting the old one out than installing the new Indesit one.

Hi Craig, well my first reaction would have been purple Hotpoint toploader!!, you must have had a very nic surprise then...It looks a complete hybrid of a washer, the earlier MK72 model is different and the taller Slimline 308s is different on the back brace -

Have looked at the parts book and it looks like in the Qualtex list they are the long shaft brushes, CAR02, (DA2 / SA11) can you get spares through work?

As the motor is out do you have a local repair shop you can take it to?

Good luck with this machine these are little beauties, solidly built.

The electron brushes are shorter than the logic brushes they will both fit though

Have fun with it, small it is but it is a very serious bit of kit.

Well all i can say is what a machine, just sat & watched it go through a complete whites programme. It Completed the programme without one single problem & i'm loving the classic vintage sound of a true Servis & the powerful 95rpm distribution speed is just great to watch.

Ohhhh Craig, Craig, CRAIG!!!!!!!!!

What an absolutely SUPERB find!
Am totally over the moon for you and I wish I was in your shoes, when you walked into that utility room!

What was the state of the kitchen and utility room? Modern or vintage? Suppose what I am trying to fathom out is, how such a great little bit of kit has survived for soooo long.

AND

you have managed to bag one in superb condition as well.

I had forgotten how solidly built these little beasties were, with drums that feel so heavy duty and thick and everything feeling so chunky and solid. With the cabinet being that much smaller, everything inside feels and looks that much bigger.

An aunt and uncle of mine had the Mk300 version - the one with the silver fascia. Having been painted purple to match the then kitchen, it was dispatched circa 1986 and it wasn't until I saw Mike's Mk72 that I laid eyes on a Servis Compact again.....

More photos, more photos, more photos Craig! Loads of photos, plllleeeaaaassssseeeee:-)

Your Mk303S is the first one that I have ever seen before and you can't have too much of a good thing!

I am with Mike on the 'S' usually referring to stainless steel inner tubs and its frustrating that no one has quite fathomed out how to date Servis machines.
I am of the opinion that Servis worked on a rough date guide based on production number batches, but as there is virtually no Servis Servicing information out there, we don't have anything to go off:-(

Ahhh well - what does age matter. All that matters is that you have got one.
Mike - you will have to nip up the M6 one day and take your Mk308S with you, to meet its little cousin!

The only colour photo of a Mk300 below.
Where are you Mk300's?

Yes, Servis were very well made machines in those days. It reminds me a bit of the mid '70s AEG front loaders. I had one of those EAGs in my shed for some years, just needing an internal hose, which was obsolete. Sadly it ended up going for scrap metal.

It was situated in a 2nd floor flat that looked like it had been converted from a large house some time back, old fashioned but clean. I only wished that i had taken my camera with me so you could have seen the room that it was in. I never got to see the person it belonged to because the landlord let us in to connect up the new washer & to take away the Servis.

Thank you for the wonderful Servis pictures & yes a matching Dryer would just finish it off.

Been busy all day touching up the paint work on this beauty. Picture of Fabric Conditioner section, can't believe just how quiet it is when filling up.

Hi Craig.

I really am so very pleased that you have managed to save the 303S. Still can't quite believe it and keep turning on my computer to just do a quick double check :-)

They are, how can I put it, ....erm.... cute? They really do appeal to me and stir memories of my childhood.

My Aunty Madge and Uncle Arnold owned a Mk72, which did good service through till circa 1986, when it was replaced by a 6030 Quartz Plus.

As mentioned previously, another Aunt and Uncle (Margaret & Ed) owned a Mk300 and its matching Supa-Dry Mk200.
They moved to a new house circa 1984 which had a purple kitchen and, with the old Mk300 beginning to look a tad tatty, Uncle Ed repainted it purple to match the units. Of course we all go 'noooooooooooooooo' now, but its coat of purple paint enabled it to survive a bit longer until the kitchen refit occurred and it was replaced by a Hotpoint 95450.

It was then a long wait till 2007, before I saw another in the form of Mike's superb Mk72.

There was never a Mk303 in my family and your Mk303S is the very first image of that particular variant that I have ever seen.

Has helped bring a smile to my face, after what has turned out to be a complicated weekend.
Anyways - roll on some more photos and will keep an eye on Youtube to await the videos. Cannot wait!

Let us know how things progress.
Paul

Corr Blimey!

Hi Keith.

Thanks for posting the page on the Mk200 and Mk300 Compacts. Is that an advert or is it ....... a BROCHURE??????

Being hellishly cheeky as always, if the latter - any chance of seeing the other pages?

Craig saves a Mk303S and you Keith post, I think, only the third photo/image I have ever seen of a Mk300.
I am pretty sure that the Mk300 appears in a small black and white photo in a Which report, but the only colour image I have seen previously has been from a Servis history leaflet of Mike's.
Memories fade, but seeing a photo of the Mk300 has seen them all come flooding back.

What great little machines Servis produced.
Paul
p.s staying with the brand, do you have an image of the Servis Mk302 Continental at all in your archives? This is one model that really intrigues - as the black sheep of the Servis family, to the best of my knowledge, no one has ever come forward with an image of one.
It was on sale as the budget end machine, to the Mk300's middle of the range and Mk301 Selectronic's top of the range.

Great machine Craig, such a sturdy compact devil for a full sized load, motor sound great, check the sump isnt blocked or hose connection, it seems slow clearing the water, it should have cleared all the water before it starts spinning, you can hear the water is still in the tub as its into a minute+ of spinning!!

My Aunt Ellen had the first Servis MK72 compact with matching dryer, dryer was in the garage, then it was swapped for a Servis compact 303 with door latch and then later a Quartz 6033.

The white timeline indicator on the fast spin position? has that been added on or is it printed on the brown fascia - never seen that before!! the dispenser is pristine and yes very quiet on fill.

All these quirky little differences, its deffo a special one!!

Hi Paul,
Glad you enjoyed it, It is a brochure that managed to salvage from school. There were two Home Ec room's, Mrs Jenkins had a filing cabinet that i decided to raid oneday, and found quite a lot of old literature, I think this was a machine that was being looked at for the school when they were looking to change from the Servis Supertwin's mk42's (x2), not sure if they ever got the MK200 as by the time i got there they were onto AEG Lavamat's 971's i think.
Here is the front page, i will try and get the inner pages scanned as soon as :)

Hi Keith.

Thanks for scanning the front cover and cannot wait for the inside pages.
A majorly lucky find at school for sure and thank goodness that you did find it!

I will have to print a copy off and casually leave it lying around on the table, at my Aunty Margaret's. See what the reaction is:-)

Thanks again and will be on teneter hooks for the inside pages, especially as I have just been informed that I will be internetless in Derby from tomorrow! Nice to get half an hours notice! :-(

Well done Keith for finding this rare advertising, hadnt seen that one and with the emphasis on the thick vitreous enamel drum and outer tub holding the heat in in, makes sense when you think about it - my aunt also filled on number 1 and then turned to 5 for a quicker wash if the tea towels where lightly soiled.

Yes the elusive euro servis, I think it had a dispenser shaped like the Selectronic, with the full bar across the front for the handle!!

Hi Craig, hope the compact is all sorted and working, can you look at reply "37" is that an adhesive sticker for the spin mode?

Economy Switch:
When the switch is in the "ECONOMY" position, the main wash action will start immediately providing the water temperature is above 40

It basically uses your hot water for programmes 1,2,4 and 5 etc and then doesnt use the built in heater!! -

Thanks for that Mike i was expecting it to work like "lets say" a Hotpoint 95 series machine that cuts the heater off from the word go. If i select programme 1 & 2 that fills with hot water only, the heater does come on but just for a short time but i guess this is to do with the thermostat catching up to 40 even though the hot water that has filled the tub is at almost 60. Hope it makes sense what i'm trying to say.

I only wish it was an adhesive sticker but it is not. The brown plastic has come off at some point, luckily the number wordings are still there. This is the only thing that needs putting right but i need to think of how to do it correctly, apart from than that it is in perfect looking & working condition.

Hi craig.

Endeavour to find an enamel paint match - will be difficult, but worth a try - then to draw a white line to '0' and a fawn line to '6&7'. Now that will be a steady hand for you! :-)

Still brings a smile to my face, knowing that there is another Compact Servis preserved.

As being a bit of a perfectionist Paul i like things to look as they should be. I am tempted to peel off a bit of the exact colour brown plastic from the plinth & transfer it back onto the control panel. I will post a picture of my handy work when i am happy with the final result.

Hi Craig, understand, the thermostat HAS to register 40d, to energise the override to ECONOMY, so yes the heater circuit may engage for a time..

Well, for a broken piece it looks a perfect symetry, like a graduated spin, the outer control sheath did have a habit of catching when it was worn, check the tension on the con rod and adjust the screw (back of the fascia) otherwise it will keep catching!!
