HI, I AM ABOUT TO INSTALL A KDSM-21A IN MY KITCHEN THAT I PURCHASED NEW FOR MY PARENTS, AND THEY SELDOM USED IT EXCEPT AFTER FAMILY GATHERINGS WHERE WE CHILDREN WOULD INSIST MY MOTHER USE IT. THEY HAVE SINCE SOLD THE HOUSE AND I PAID THE NEW OWNER $50 AND TOOK THE UNIT OUT AND SAVED IT IN MY GARAGE FOR 5 YEARS WAITING FOR MY CURRENT UNIT, A KDI-21A TO DIE, BUT IT IS NOT DEAD AND I AM DOING A KITCHEN UPDATE WITH NEW SOLID SURFACE COUNTERTOPS AND THOUGHT NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE THE SWITCH. THIS MACHINE IS IN EXCELLANT CONDITION WITH MINIMAL USE AND I NEED TO KNOW SHOULD I DO ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR WHEN I FIRE IT UP? LIKE ANY SPECIAL CLEANER OR WATER TREATMENT FOR THE FIRST LOAD OR AT LEAST RUN IT EMPTY TO CLEAN OUT ANY POTENTIAL DUST OR DIRT.

MY PARENTS HAD VERY HARD WATER WHERE THEY LIVED WITHOUT A SOFTENER SO I DO SEE SOME VERY LIGHT LIME BUILDUP IN THE UNIT IS THERE ANY REASON THAT I SHOULD NOT RUN SOME WHITE VINEGAR IN THE FIRST LOAD? ANYWAY GREAT MACHINE AND I FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE FOUND THIS SITE, ANY FEEDBACK WOULD BE HELPFUL. NOVAGUY

do recommend adding some hot water to the sump manually without the motor running and then letting it sit for 10 minutes or so to soften the pump seal if it has not been used in awhile.

i have a lot of dishwashers and some of mine sit for a year or so in between uses, i always do this. i pour in a pan full of hot water, enough to cover the pump area so the seal gets wet. i leave it for 10 to 20 minutes, then turn on the machine.

don't know if it really helps but i feel better when i do it!

Great idea rollermatic, I was going to suggest the same thing. Might even be good to let it sit for a day or so. If you have soft water, and the buildup is light just run it the way it is. Your soft water will gradually dissolve this buildup.
Beats subjecting it to a bunch of chemicals. You have a great machine.
