I have a Maytag DE806 HOH Dryer that's been in my family since before I was born. Think it's from 1968 or even earlier. It's been working fine, although since I've been on this forum looking around I was reminded that it used to have fluorescent panel lights, a drum light, and a bell. I replaced the drum bulb pretty easily. I think the fluorescent tube should be an easy replacement as well.

Not sure why the bell no longer sounds, but that leads me into its behavior of late. About 6 months ago it wanted to keep going and going and going even after the clothes were dry. We had a repairman over. He cleaned it out and it seemed to work better, but still not perfect. Not sure if the cleanout fixed the problem or what. However, this kid didn't have a clue when it came to the moisture sensing wires on the baffles. I had to explain it to him that they sensed moisture, and he was still skeptical, thinking that it used thermostats only.

Anyway, now it seems like we have the opposite problem. It heats, but after about 10 minutes, it shuts off even with damp clothes. We can re-set it, it runs another 10 minutes or so, and shuts off. One time when the clothes were just about dry, it ran for 14 minutes before shutting off. It eventually gets the job done, but having to keep going downstairs to turn it back on is frustrating to say the least.

Do we have one problem or several? I wonder about that capacitor that people keep taking about. Any hints on removing the back panel to check the wires? Any tips on finding the capacitor that may need replacing? I also wonder about the spring and brush, like another person talked about . . .

I also seem to remember when my dad worked on it, at least once, there was a loose or fraying wire that was rubbing on the drum as it turned. Could that be an issue again?

Anybody know what's happening here and what we need to do to fix it?
