BEAUTIFUL set, I hope someone here gets these!!

I noticed that the washer lid opens to the right; at first I thought the picture was "flipped" until I saw the "Lady Kenmore" script on the dryer!! Didn't know they had reversing lids...

...lid opens to the right;

Westy,

What's the big deal about that? My 1979 KM's lid does too because the washer sits on the right. Okay, so I drilled a couple a holes, repositioned the lid and bypassed the switch! lol!

I thought all Kenmore filters were on the right side of the tub, too. But I don't think the photo is reversed, because the snubber is on the back right side of the tub where it should be. Nor is the K on the agitator cap backwards. Also, the lid opens to the right, which is the opposite of most Kenmores.

Interesting! And beautiful.

Yup. Whirly has been building automatics for Sears since Sears first automatic introduced in 1947 and still going strong today.

I think the WP/ Sears relationship goes back to the late 19-teens-early 20's.

I guess the 1958s also opened from left to right. John LeFevre has the 1959 push-button with rapid advance timer and it too oepns left to right. Have also seen a Model 70 with the same opening style.

I guess it would make sense to put the filter on the left side if the lid opens to the right; otherwise you'd be a little cramped with the lid hinge in your way when trying to clean the filter.

Damn, these are beautiful. Hope someone gives them a good home.

No I'm pretty sure all Kenmore washer are delivered with the lid opening right to left. But they are easily reversable from 1957 thru 1964, possibly even later.

Thanks for the clarification, Robert. I'd never seen a Kenmore with a lid that opens to the right before either, but made an assumption when I saw the filter on the left side.

Post# 106041 , Reply# 41   1/26/2006 at 22:05 (6,663 days old) by dick_s. ()

Yes, the lids are reversible. My 56 Cycla Fabric has holes covered up with little plastic seals which can be taken out and the lid which normally opens from right to left changed so that it opens from left to right.

Concerning the recirc. filter, it also surprises me that it is one the left. I have never seen that in a Kenmore. Now I might wonder if this machine was put together in a plant close to the Canadian border. The left sided filter has some trace of outside influence.

Everything else looks the same. I say this as I used to watch load after load washing in an identical one except that ours was white. And the lint filter was stationery. It was Sears first year of the self-cleaning recirc filter. Boy, was that nice but that 58 was the noisiest Kenmore I ever came across. Oh, and it suds locked like crazy!

And the timer was so neat as that band kept moving along. I have very fond memories of that machine

Nope, here's the deal

unimatic1140's profile picture
The Filter is on the left because it's actually NOT a lint filter cartridge. It's the chrome covered return port for the brand new "Self-Cleaning" lint-filter, Kenmore's first.

For a year or two after Kenmore introduced their self-cleaning filter (and we know now that it's not the first self-cleaning filter) they returned to filtered water back into the wash tub directly through a port on the cabinet side. Then they did away with that and returned it directly into the outer tub for years to come.

My best friend's Mom had a '59 all push-button with rapid advance timer! I didn't know what one would call that 'rat tat tat tat' sound it made as the timer moved to the cycle his Mom would select. Alas it was traded b/c of a blown water pump in 1970 for a solid-tub SQ. Does John have pics of his '59 posted? What a trip down memory lane that w/b!

Here is John's '59 in Maryland, he has the matching dryer as well.

If I remember correctly, there is a softener tank in the control panel and the slide-control on the right side of the panel determines the amount of product dispensed.

And I know some guys don't like Kenmore machines because of the slower spin speed, and neutral drain. But you really have to admit,Kenmore had some VERY nice looking machines in the 1950's and 1960's. Their control panels were some of the best looking of them all IMO. Wonder who designed those panels? Anyone know the story?

&Seeing John's '59 LK makes me want to kick myself again for getting rid of my yellow one. Having grown up with a '60 Model 80 (same type of pushbuttons as the '59), I just didn't think it was all that special. And yes, both machines suds-locked all the time.

I've never seen the '60 LK in person, just in the above photo. If only my parents had sprung one model up in the line. Sigh.

The only difference in cycles between the '59 LK and the '60 Model 80 were these:

1) The white SPECIALS button had COLD WATER WASH on top and RINSE SPIN on the bottom. (The '59 had no rinse/spin cycle)

2) The pink SPECIALS button had WASHABLE WOOLENS on top and SPIN ONLY on the bottom. There was no control for the console/tub lights on the '60. The light came on at the beginning of the cycle and went off at the end. When I had my '59 LK, I used to turn off the lights in my windowless laundry room and load by the light of the w & d consoles and the tub light. Sigh, again...

There is also a TOGGLESWITCH (Hi Tog!) on the right (I think) side of the console on both the '59 and '60 that adjusted the medium water temps to warm, and the warm water temps to cold (including rinses).

AND, if I recall correctly, I believe the Light Soil Delicates cycle and the Washable Woolens cycles were identical. Warm wash/rinse, 2 minutes agitation, slow spins.

I did not realize it was a "timeline" style machine! It reminds me a lot of my great aunt's RCA Whirlpool timeline machine, which I think was also from about 1958.

That was my mother's first machine - also in pink. No dryer though as we lived in a Brooklyn apartment. I recall the waterfall lint filter but have to say that it stopped working after only a few years and for some reason, dad never fixed it. The lid did indeed open right to left and there was the famous softener cup that emptied as the rinse water entered the machine. I also remember an overly sensitive out of balance buzzer that could wake the dead and terrified me.

Yes, oh and a Big Congratulations Mark. I'm thrilled a club member is the owner of those machines! They are too beautiful to go anywhere else.

When you get them I think its time to start a special Lady Kenmore Club Album where we can should off all of our Lady Kenmore's.

How many of them thar Maytags you gonna have to sell to make up for this Kennymore parr? You best start yourself a production repair line and get-r-gone, son!

The only reason that I bid on these was to keep them in the club. (I'm really not a Kenmore fan) Since I didn't recognize any of the stage names of people bidding, I went ahead and bid. Several years ago I lost a set of pink Maytags to a lady that didn't collect, but had a pink kitchen and wanted them to match her kitchen. Found out later that she discovered that her local Maytag repair man couldn't fix them, so the dingbat put them out at the curb. The machines were lost forever and I learned a good lesson! Now about those Ulta Cleans.................Mark

I couldn't agree more with you Mark; better have them in the club than in someone else’s hands who does not understand the full value and uniqueness of what they have!

Congrats again, they sure a beautiful. Now we need to find the 1960 and 1961 sets.

Wonderful set Mark, I know you will cherish them and take good care of them. Those are pretty easy to fix too. Let us know how they work when you get them installed........

Mark,

Well done!

Who was the second highest bidder? Was it a member?

Glad also to see these beauties going to a place where they will be well taken care of, and treasured. Too many people doing "vintage" think they want vintage appliances not having clue what they are getting into. When they get a vintage item, then find out it needs work/repairs that cannot be done off the shelf it is highly likely the poor item goes off to the krusher.

Oh well

I put in a very substantial snipe bid, but apparently the bidding was already up over my bid when the snipe launched.

Mark, congratulations. If you only bid on them to keep them in the club, we should talk.

I am having the machines shipped right to the Roanoke house and then I will take them to Wytheville. I used Beltman shipping. They shipped something else for me and they were really fast, cheap, and everything arrived intact! Mark

The problem with snipe bids is that they don't come in until the last few seconds of the auction. That's why I stay very up front about my bids. I had no idea that you would have wanted to pay that much for the machines, or I would not have bid against another member. I had no idea who 2655rosemarie was, and since I didn't recognize that drag name, I entered my bid. In the meantime, karl2561 also placed a bid. I have no idea who that is either. I would like to know though, as I see from his buys, that he also collects lighted Christmas decorations like I do. (Would love to get together with him and see what his (or her) collection looks like.) I saw that you were bidding earlier in the game, but kind of counted you out, since you didn't place another bid. These machines just HAD to come to a club member so that everyone could enjoy them at WASH-IN Time. Couldn't stand the thought of the loss of a great set like this! Now of course, you are welcome to come and pet/play with these machines anytime you want! Mark

Have something coming from Beltmann tomorrow, so we shall see what we shall see.

Like a man who handles his bizness on the spot. Items paid for and shipping arranged all on the winning bid day. Am always egar to get my winning item shipped and "safe" before some unforseen disaster could happen. Such as one of those once in a hundred year floods! *LOL*

I didn't bid early on so you're confusing another bidder with me. Hey, I would never ask someone not to bid on something because I was going to. I didn't announce my intentions here because I didn't want anyone to even think I was implying it. I just thought they were beautiful machines, thought about it a bit and decided to go for it. No harm no foul. I'm glad you got them.

The winning bid wasn't much more than my snipe bid, so if you wanted to consider selling them to me because you're not that interested in them per se but want to keep them in the family, let me know. I'd get toogle to put a new 220 line in and schedule my first wash-in. If not, I'll come and visit them sometime.

Again, congratulations.

And Robert,

I would actually prefer a turquoise set. That's the only reason I had to think about bidding on the Kenmores for "a bit". I hadn't imagined a pink set in my laundry room. I had always imagined a turquoise set being the ultimate for my situation. So your 1958 Unimatic/Filtrator set would be wonderful. If you want to sell, I want to buy. Just email me and ask for Versatronic.

One has to remember eBay's bidding system will cancel out lower bids if a higher amount was pre-set by another bidder.

Mark's bid was placed with almost over a minute left to the auction. The second highest bidder it seems kept "testing" the waters to outbid Mark, but could'nt get where they needed to be. In situations like this if one REALLY wishes an item it is best to push the boat out and bid the absolute maximum amount (without having to sell one's first born to raise the funds), is prepared to pay.

Of course if the higher bidder has already entered a pretty dear amount already, things can get very interesting. In such instances one is actually bidding against eBay's computers who will enter automatic bids almost instantly. This leave a person doing manual "sniping" with only seconds to regroup and bid again. Have seen people try to outbid a higher bid already placed with something like 5 seconds left to the auction. Only to loose when eBay's computers did what they were programmed to do.

With fast Internet connections becoming more and common, it does seem so much action is taking place with less than one minute left to auction end. Smart money used to say just enter one's highest bid early and leave it at that. But that does leave one open to someone coming along and bidding the item up without any intention of winning. This is hard to prove but still happens.

Job well done L.

Congrats. Mark - Now call MS. Belknap and tell her what you did! (Private Joke)

This is a great lesson folks. Find a local dealer/junk shop and keep looking. They will have some machines that you'd wished you'd payed $150.00 for.

Irony, what is still available is still obtainable.

Love, Steve

Mark, have you read the other thread posted by a member saying the seller is sending out "second chance" offers to non-winning bidders?

Better get your set on the truck and safely home, something sounds fishy.

I don't think those 2nd chance offers mean anything. I got the same thing when I lost the Philco pair. I simply ignored them.

I've heard reports that some of those are spoofs, especially on the high-dollar auctions. They are hoping that you'll bite on the offer and send them payment through PayPal, etc. so they get the money then run off...

Beware!!

Congratulations Mark on the beautiful machines!! I can't wait to see them in action at the 2007 wash-in!

I suggest, like Cimberlie said, you get that shipping truck out there and get the LKs in your possession ASAP; I'm just a little suspicious myself of the "zero-feedback" seller (NEVER a good sign from what I've seen). As to the "second-chance offer" scheme, I think it would be a good idea to give the seller absolute hell about it. :)

Post# 107414 , Reply# 101   2/2/2006 at 20:02 (6,656 days old) by versatronic ()
Don't give the seller hell

The odds are overwhelming that the seller knows nothing about the second chance over. The odds are that a seller with 0 feedback doesn't even know what a second chance offer is. Easy. The overwhelming odds are that the pair are on their way and these are scam artists at work. This happens all the time.

Spoke to the seller this morning.........

Hi All! Thanks so much for your concern on the machines. I was really touched by everyone's comments. Spoke to the seller this morning and she had no idea about the scam going on. The machines were picked up about an hour ago by Beltman. She is a bookseller and hasn't used Ebay before. I guess it was Baptism by fire so to speak. This seller is a very nice lady. She said that if she ever comes across something like this again that she will let the club members know first! Mark
