Background: My parents live in a Victorian home with the laundry set up in the cellar. They are in their 70's and getting laundry up and down the stairs is now a trial, so I suggested that they convert an unused hall closet into a laundry niche.

Given the fact that so many new appliance purchases are booby-traps, can anybody make a recommendation on what to buy?

Requirements: I am looking for a rigidly stacked washer/dryer set. Washer should be conventional upright with agitator . Dryer should be electric 240v.  Controls should be between the W and the D, not on top of the Dryer.

I am particularly concerned about discovering things that don't work as expected until after the unit is home. For example I am reading reviews of models that NO LONGER fill the tub to capacity in order to meet water-use mandates.

Any opinions on machinery, vendors, pitfalls, or even a workable vintage solution would be welcome.  I am not looking forward to a new machine purchase, but feel that it's the least evil available to me.

=Thanks=

I would stick with Maytag or Whirlpool stacked sets...

so long as there is a fabric softener select switch, then the tub will fill up for a rinse as long as fabric soft, is selected.

I would recommend the first model that is pictured here. My grandparents have that exact same one except the Kenmore model and it works really well. Last I knew the energy regulations didn't apply to this model and last time I looked at it in Sears, it still have a warm rinse option. They have had theirs for 8 years now, its one of the few stacks that I've used where the dryer is actually very good and doesn't take all day to dry a load.

BTW, what brand, age etc is their current washer that is in the cellar?

Thanks for the recomendations, tbey are much appreciated, especially the tip on filling the tub.

BTW, I have such a bad grudge against GE, I won't even buy their lightbulbs.

To find a Whirlpool 27" Thin twin stack set.  These were the best ever!  A window in the dryer door is a dead giveaway that it is what you want.

Scoots,
I'm on my 3rd Fridig/more stack. Lot's of capacity, seems durable and to date no service calls in over 12 yrs.

3rd Frigimore Stack

How long did the first two last ? They have only made these for about 25 years, If you had gotten a WP 24" or 27" stack you could still be on your first one.

Frigidaire

Frigidaire still makes combined laundry centers:

They have both gas and electric dryer versions.
