Is this a problem that needs attention?  I'm intending to sell the machine (and matching dryer) at some point.

Norgetag break squeal.

My folk's MT Atlantis has done this for years.  A MT guy I talked to said it is a dust squeal.  It does not seem to affect performance.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

That is actually very cool. Sounds like a brief car-chase squeal. Charge extra for that when you sell it!

Some of them do that after a while.  Nothing to be concerned about.  My brother and sister-in-law's Atlantis has been doing this for over 4 years.  I certainly would not go through the trouble of replacing the brake on one of those machines.  I've never done it, but I've heard and read it's somewhat involved.

Yeah, I don't want to deal with replacing the brake assembly.  My concern is that a potential buyer won't be impressed by the screech even if it's harmless.  Could a tiny drop of oil be placed in a strategic location to alleviate it?

Noisey Norge-Tag brake

Just like when real MTs do this you can try oiling the brake package, but like others mentioned the squeal will not ever cause a problem, in fact it is likely to be the least of the problems anyone ever has with one of these washers. I hope you are either selling this pair for a very low price or to someone that only does about 4 loads of laundry a month, LOL.

Now John, I think even you would admit that the post 1997-Maytag DRYERS (Atlantis included) were good dryers overall. :) (Ducking and running)

Also, oil may help for a while with these, but unlike a Newton 'Tag (which a teaspoon of oil will silence indefinitely,) I am not SURE that's the case with a Norgetag!

Mine did this for a while

Then it turned into a groaning sound as it braked. While replacing the transmission I cleaned the brake assembly, I sanded off some dust that had gathered on the brake and cleaned the stator with an SOS pad, then sanded it down a little as well but the noise is even worse now then it was before I cleaned it.

Oil=BAD!

Unlike the Dependable Care Maytag, which is a 'wet' brake, the NorgeTag is a 'dry brake' like a car brake assy. It does not do well with oil. The only way to fix this is to either replace the rotor and clean the stator OR (if you get lucky) gently sand the pads on the rotor to break the glazing and clean the surface of the stator. Problem is, either way you go, the noise stands a good chance of returning. Just like a car brake which squeals a touch. It will function just fine as is and I usually tell the customer that it's not worth the money to correct it when there's a good chance it'll return with usage. I tell them to think of it as a 'end of cycle' signal...

Thanks to all for confirming the various points that I suspected.  The squeal will stand as-is.

Actually you can put a few drops of oil on the brake and the squeal will stop. Don't put enough so the tub doesn't stop though....just a few drops.
