A friend of mind is ready to dump her troublesome front load washer. Numerous service calls, plus she complained about the lack of a pre-soak option and other common FL issues. Paid about $1500 for the pair not that long ago. She wants to go back to a Top Loader, used is fine.

Which machine should I suggest, Direct Drive or Belt Drive, any particular brand?

Belt drive version still out there would be much older I suppose. However, I'm not too familiar with rehabing Whirlpool built models. Personally, I prefer helical drive Maytags but she may need a larger capacity machine.

Kenmore/Whirlpool DD

For sure your best bet.  Very good cleaning and super reliable.  To go new the only real viable option would be a Speed Queen.  While the Helical MTs were very dependable machines the DD WP machines are even more dependable, hold more laundry, and will clean it better.  The same could be said for a current SQ.

Anyone with any common sense could work on a Whirlpool/Kenmore DD machine or any of it's variants. Everything is modular in design. This fits into that that fits into this, etc.

I've had really good luck with pre 2000 KitchenAids, they're built like tanks.
