While I have never heard anything offical directly from Whirlpool these are the reasons I belive the Calypos dissapeared and why [ sadly ] no version of it will ever appear again.
First and foremost it was complicated and very expensive to build, even at the time it was introduced I think WP realized that this machine would never make them much money, this is likely why you never saw any lower cost models either in the WP or KM line.
There were some durability problems and because they used the same Calypso name on both the WP and KM versions and the fast spread of the internet around this time it as too easy for everyone that had ever had a problem to get on line and complain about the Calypso. Notice how the Calypso replacements were Cabrio from WP, Oasses from KM and Bravos from MT and all three lines had several different models from the start, WP learned their lesson on this one about how not to name a new product.
Overall the Calyspo is a very good modern classic for any washer enthusiasts and I intend to have one in my personal laundry room the rest of my life, they are plentiful and cheap now, but 10 years from now they will likely be hard to find. |

Sadly, it becomes very obvious from that brochure, that regular top loaders are being dropped by manufacturers. I mean, look at all these concepts
- the Calypso, that certainly could have been as efficient as a FL, had Whirlpool tweaked it a little (unlike some high efficiency top loaders these days that guzzle 81 gallons to do a load of Towels). - the Catalyst top loader that could have - in theory - treated protein stains with a warm Catalyst spin and then filled with hot water to activate the bleach. That's just like the profile wash on front loaders. - and what about the Resource Saver rinse? Seems like some TLs these days just dribble some water over the load and call it Rinse. Some top loaders from decades ago appear like high tech compared to the few agi top loaders of today. |
