Went to see these..

Unfortunately, the seller was kind of a jerk, he wouldn't include the pickup for the suds saver hose, said he needed it and I could buy my own hose. Got the price down to $45 for both but didn't pull the trigger.

At the time I didn't have room in my van to take them both, but mainly the condition was disappointing. The dryer was nice and had the lighted console. The washer on the other hand had rust on the bottom edges of the cabinet, the control buttons were well worn and the trans had a major lower oil seal leak.

Otherwise, everything was mostly intact. My guess is they are 1971 vintage as that is when the house they came out of was built.

Was I foolish to pass them up?

YES

$45 for a working pair? You should have said YES YES YES at $50 and not haggled over one hose. A bit of rust on a 39 year old machine? To be expected.

a matched set suds model Maytag 1974, working condition. You should have jumped at the fantastic price and smiled no matter what the seller was like.

Just my opinion. I've paid more for less.

....Of parts.

There are parts on those machines that are NLA, and they are worth more than $45 if purchased used on eBay or CL.

Turn around, go back.

P.S.: There are only a very few 'Tags of this vintage that do not have worn buttons. Quite a few machines in members' hands are restored to awesomely nice condition, except that no one has found a way to restore buttons, and they're oh-so-NLA, so these members' babies still have that imperfection.
