I have a Whirlpool LA9100XTW1 from 1991 and I was wondering if I can buy a factory or aftermarket automatic fabric dispenser part for this machine? I bought some liquid fabric softener and the directions indicate to add it directly to the fabric softener dispenser. I looked at the machine and the owners manual and saw no such dispenser. I know there are dispensing balls out there but I would prefer something that affixes to the agitator that is made by Whirlpool or an appliance parts company? If there is such a part, what is the number? Thanks.

Yes there is a dispenser available for that machine.  It will cost around $12 at an appliance parts store.  All you have to do is take off the cap and put the dispenser in.  You do this by finding the notch around the top of the agitator, inserting a small flathead screwdriver and prying the cap loose.  You can then press the dispenser in until you hear it lock in place.  It is important when doing this to reach down the middle of the agitator and make sure the cover over the dog mechanism is seated in place.  If not FS solution will get in and stop it from working.

When using any loiqid FS dispenser it is important to only use a small amount and fill the rest of the space with hot water to prevent a buildup of old softener and mold.  Also a couple quarts of hot water poured through the dispenser regularly will help keep it clean.

I hope this answers your question.
