I have a powerfin agitator, with four holes in it for the lint filter to work.I dont use the agitator in the actual washer, I use it in a large plastic tub right now since our whirlpool washer is currently being repaired. We have ALOT of clothes. And towels. I work the agitator back and fourth almost the same speed as the acutal Maytag machine would do. I will dump the water out into our bath tub and I will see alot of lint at the drain. Why isnt my lint filter catching this? Its completely clean? Will it only work in the washing machine? I need help!

Methinks it will only work in the machine. Working this agitator by hand as got to be tough on the arms and your probably not moving as much water thru it. Remember this agitator on regular speed moves at 63 opms using a helical 5 gear with pitman arm transmission or at 155 opm for the orbital. The vanes create the suction needed to get the filter to work and the filter won't work if the water level is below the barrel openings.

Even in a machine, these don't come up with a helluva lot of lint.

With my average large load, a little flat disc of lint somewhere between the size of a nickel and the size of a quarter is the norm.

Most loads done on the "Small" water setting don't result in any lint on the filter at all.

Which makes you wonder just how long the filter in my Almond 806 had to be neglected to get into this condition before I got the machine:

I agree and it also depends on the load size and how much laundry is actually in the machine. I noticed if I used the Ex Large setting on a load that would have easily just been a Large load water level, the more water movement and clothes really moving thru the washbasket, the better the filter would work. Plus the Swirl Away drain system works very well in a Maytag washer. That filter pic looks totally plugged up in the openings. It had to have been like that for a long time.

What you see on that filter is an amalgam of lint and lime buildup from Waterloo's famously hard water.

Took a long time and about a bottle of Lime-A-Way to get it into this shape. Anyone else would have just looked for a new one, but what can I tell you? I'm stubborn.

Stubborn? You have no idea... LOL!

That filter's nothing! I've had them so packed that I've had to break plastic to even come close to removing it. Seriously. Then there are the people who never even KNEW that there was a filter IN there to clean. Usually those who came by the washer 2nd hand, handed down from family or just forgot...

Ask anyone in the field about the atrocities committed on or to Maytag lint filters. Sheesh!

I believe you when you say this isn't as bad an atrocity as you've seen, but I will say this:

The agitator came out of the tub easier than the lint filter came out of the agitator.

We didn't know our Maytag A712 had one of these either. But I didn't read the entire users guide, as I normally do. We had the machine about 4 months before I knew there was a filter in it. There was lint, but also a LOT of lime scale built up in those little holes in the filter. It took me about an evening to poke all of those out with a toothpick. one by one.

I don't think that most people that had these machines know about the filter unless they read the users guide cover to cover.

But for excellent lint removal of your laundry there is nothing like a Filter-Flo!

First, since you're lifting your laundry out of the water, lint filtration is not as important as it would be in a tub where the water is drained away and the clothes stay.

Second: I think you would have a much easier job of doing laundry without a washing machine if you were to invest in a pair of insulated, waterproof boots so that you could wash larger loads of clothes in the bathtub simply by dancing or walking, using the stronger leg muscles. If you continue to wash in the plastic tub, you might have an easier time if you were to use the Maytag agitator in an up and down plunger action to force water through the clothes. If holding the agitator and moving it is too tiring, or if your tub is too narrow to use the Powerfin in an up and down motion, you could try using a cup-type rubber plunger which, with its narrow pole handle, would be esier to hold and would still force water through the fabrics. If you wish to continue with the back and forth agitation, a canoe paddle would be more effective in your plastic tub and much easier to use.

I just use it for towels. Large loads, so the water DOES go over all four holes. I do work the agitator very fast, It isnt alot of work too. But i have a plastic lint trap before the drain hole in the bath tub, so it all collects there. And the towels still come out cleaner than our Whirlpool Cabrio.

I think if my washer failed-I would just take my clothes to a laundramat-I feel far better than trying to do the clothes by hand. But if doing them by hand is what you want-than good.Sounds like a lot of work using an agitator by hand.
