4 27x55 Charisma towels
4 11x13 hand towels
4 8x8 wash cloths
2 random dish towels

Detergent: Arm & Hammer scent free with some oxygen cleaner or what not. Yes, I used WAY too much, a full cap to be exact. In the GE this would barely have suds up. Here, however, towards the end, you can see gobs of suds. Thankfully, I have the anti Algore second rise at my disposal.
Lesson learned. Half cap next time!

Hmmmm.  The second rinse option on my machine doesn't have that same designation.  How did SQ fit all of that copy next to the small toggle switch?

Looks like it's on the tree hugger setting in that picture.  Must not be your machine.

You know what I like best? The spin drain, I absolutely hate neutral drain with the layer of lint left on top of the clothes.

While I prefer front-loaders, it's nice knowing there is still one traditional top-loader on the market. And it's well built and made in the US to boot. Love the spin-drain. Haven't had one of those since my mid-80s Frigidaire; which, by the way, used far more water per cycle than this comparitively parsimonious Speed Queen. Gotta tell you washman...I'm a little disappointed in you.

:)

sorry Frigilux

I just don't know what to say. I tried to consult with Algore but he would not return my phone calls or emails. He left me hung out to dry, if you will pardon the pun.

So I had to take control over my laundry destiny. I knew in my heart of hearts that lots of water+decent phosphate free detergent would equal a satisfying wash day and clean fresh laundry.

My only error was underestimating the superior agitation action of this fine USA made machine and using far too much Arm & Hammer scent free detergent w/oxygen or carbon dioxide or nitrogen or whatever. I assure you I will not repeat that mistake.

Not quite

"Looks like it's on the tree hugger setting in that picture. Must not be your machine."

This was right after I got the machine, before 1st use.

It was actually great to see an old-school layer of suds in your video!

There's usually a top-loader as a second machine in my laundry room---for fun and variety. Currently, that is a 2012 Frigidaire Immersion Care. I'm starting to think I should snag a Speed Queen while the company is still making them. It's really my only chance to score a truly traditional spin-drain washer without going vintage.

"While the company is still making them"

Does Alliance have any plans to stop making them?

There have been a couple of comments to that effect at AW, but I can't vouch for their veracity. I certainly hope they continue to make them, as they're the last holdout for traditional top-loaders.

Perhaps EPA Algorithms involve putting pressure on manufacturers to cease production of this type of machine.

I might have to start cruising the local craigslistings and habitat store for trophy home discards.  I don't need a brand new one as long as my Affinity is still functioning, so can't justify that kind of purchase.

There may be an AWN542 available...

if when I get my gas bill I see a reason to go back to my Frigidaire (Square door) front loader. Oh and the water bill too. I suspect I'm gonna gasp and reach for my heart medication. :-)

I love the spin-drain too!! Although it would be cool if it would start spinning the water out really fast like some of the videos I've seen of older machines that did a spin-drain....It was like the water was there one second, and gone the next.

pierreandreply4's profile picture
me i hope that canadien us manufacturers never stop producing top loads washers because if you count the year i have wash in a top load washer since i was a kid until 2004 where i switxh to my duet if i had a choice today i would go back to using a topload washer even if that would mean using a refurbish direct drive washer or a vintage non energy star model like in this picture even if theis means the washer would be harvest gold avocado green white ect

I'd be amazed if Alliance drops their TL line, because every competitor that drops theirs means more market share for themselves. They know a sizeable percentage of consumers can't be fooled into believing tumbling clothes in a FL can wash or rinse them as well as wringing them through an agitator. Also I see more and more people looking back to TLs, because the only alternative is to pay $1500 or $2000 (or more) for FL sets with one or two year warranties.

As for water usage, imo if it ever gets to the point where I can't afford enough water to properly wash my clothes, it's time to move to a country that's not a third world shithole. I think Alliance knows the absence of an Energy Star sticker has become far more of a selling point in the U.S. than a shortcoming.

Agreed JeffG

Not to mention the fact there are forums full of disatsified users of FL and HE TL machines. You know SQ is looking at this and you know they are content to keep offering old school machines that work and that people will pay the price asked.

The tooling has long since been paid for. The production process is sound and efficient. For SQ to introduce some new fangled electronic feces laden junk would be a dumb business move. In fact, Alliance Laundry is hiring approx 200 workers due to expansion. The CEO was quoted, in part, saying "...customers are waiting too long to get our products........." That should tell us the demand for their machines is perhaps greater than we think. And all this with little advertising and no sales to your local BIG BOX store. Or Sears.

Praise the Lord for old school TL machines that work. Period.

I think Alliance knows....

actually if they really knew they would return a "warm" rinse option and take out the restrictor in the hot water valve. I believe they were energy star for a short period before the latest energy star requirements came out. At least they alude to that in the user documentation. I'm just saying... :-)

Their problem is and always has been advertising imo. Just a few weeks ago we ran into (yet) another local appliance dealer who thought SQ only sold commercial TL units.
