cheaper than a miele, because the prices are going up on these machines, it does not look like i will be owning one any time sooner, my samsung still going strong, it seems like its going to be around for a very long time.

Well, first thing to consider is that one should consider Miele to be the best...
I'd vouch for Asko and Gorenje or the proper SMEG made washing machines but if I were in the UK it would be ISE appliances, rebadged, stronger ASKO!
With full 10 years warranty!

Finally: NOTHING! Asko is well, but at least as expensive. And everything else is BSH (what I don't really trust in), Whirlpool, Electrolux or one of these smaller manufactures which over all have just no usable service at all.
May you could go with a used Miele. Go with a good one without bearing failure (not as expensive as an electronic, but way more work to do), check it up and do a good cleaning cycle and you'll be fine...

In the UK, in order of preference, these are the machines I would gladly own:

Miele
Bosch/Siemens
Beko
Electrolux
AEG
High end Zanussi (jetsystem's only!)
LG
High end Hotpoint (Ultima range etc)
