Has anyone used Fuller 86 detergent? It works out to 40 cents a load, assuming you get all 86 loads from the box.

How about other powdered detergents that might not be found in everyday supermarkets or BIG BOX stores?

Is that the Fuller Brush detergent?

I have used it and it is really good.

Question,

On my new SQ, should I be using powered or liquid?

Frank: My daily driver detergent is powdered Tide With Bleach HE (top-rated by Consumer Reports). It gives excellent results in my front-loader. For the SQ, I purchased a jug of Wisk Deep Clean Original (which can be used in either a standard or HE machine). Wisk gets an overall score of 80, very close to Tide's 82.

I measured a "medium" dose and washed a load of whites. All I can say is I've never seen such tenacious suds! I have softened water, and I'm used to Tide being all about the suds, but after FIVE deep rinses, the Wisk was still producing a lot of suds in the SQ. I'm not talking a few bubbles, here; it was still producing a thin layer of foamy suds!

In fact, after the 4th deep rinse, I pulled the clothes out, refilled the washer and let it agitate. No suds at all. I started adding the clothes back in, and immediately there was suds was all over the place.

I used powdered Sears detergent (the version in the green box) for the next load, and had a crystal clear rinse. Sears' detergent isn't rated as high for stain removal by CR, but it does a good job in my front-loader. (It is also designed to be used in standard or HE machines.)

I'll have to experiment with the Wisk, as it is by all accounts an excellent detergent. There was a good 1/2-inch to inch of suds in the wash, but the machine had no trouble spinning it out. At any rate, I've never seen anything like it.

As for your question: By far, most people use liquids these days. I don't think any harm will come to your new SQ with either format.

Sorry, Ben, didn't mean to hijack your Fuller 86 thread, but was answering Frank's question.

Back on topic: Have never heard of Fuller 86. But yeah, 40 cents per load seems extremely high-priced. Even top-rated products by Tide come in between 18 to 23 cents per load.

Is the Fuller detergent low sudsing, and does it rinse out well?

I use Wisk Deep Clean and it is wonderful. 40 cents/load for the Fuller sounds kind of high to me. You can usually get 1$ coupons around here for the Wisk in the Sunday papers. True it does suds up a lot but I measure on to the second highest line for large loads in my top loader and it usually comes out about right.

Performance is better with powdered detergents ime, also liquids contain waxes that can muck up washers. That said we use Woolite for Darks for most lightly soiled loads. :) It's different (thinner) than regular Woolite and has a nice scent.

Our other go-to is Charlie's Powder (for whites). It's mostly washing soda and has the best residual scent of any laundry product we've found. If you remember that 'really clean' smell of laundry when you were a kid, yeah that. :) Eugene, it will also remove detergent residues from your clothes and machine.

Joe-- I want to use Wisk Deep Clean, as it's rated very highly by Consumer Reports. I just have to figure out why I wasn't able to shake the suds despite many deep rinses. It was crazy! Don't know if it was because of the softened water or using too much, although I only filled the cap to the "medium" line. I'll try again using half as much and see if that improves things.

I also used liquid chlorine bleach with that particular load, but I can't imagine that would cause a sudsing issue...

Some chlorine bleach formulations can promote sudsing.

I haven't used Wisk in a while but don't recall any sudsing issues when I did.

Glenn-- I'll have to try it in both the front-loader and in the top-loader without chlorine bleach to see if that gives different results. It was almost as if the detergent was locked into the fabric. There was even some suds clinging to the tub wall just above the clothes...after the spin of the 4th deep rinse! Freaky.

Back to Fuller 86: Just ordered a box of it from Amazon.com. Curiosity got the best of me. Great user reviews. Appears to be low-sudsing and clean-rinsing. Took advantage of free shipping---which is slower---so it's slated to arrive between Oct. 18-21. Then...let the testing begin!

Eugene.....

I too love powder Tide with bleach, a great clean and scent....I have softened water too....

Sears Ultra Plus is also great.....and inexpensive...

but I do a mix.....taking the scoop from SUP...and put one scoop of both SUP and Tide w/bleach into each machine.....takes care of every stain the first time...give it a try!

Dollar General is a good place to get detergents inexpensively...just a thought

Jeez Frigilux

First by sheer willpower, I convince you to buy a SQ.

Then you go out and get some Fuller 86 detergent!

At this rate, I am putting in my two weeks and taking up a job selling SQ and Fuller 86 detergent!

You simply must post a review of this stuff. I was going to give it a go, but at 40 cents per load, yeeesh.

Be sure to run it through different fabrics, I would be most curious to see how well it cleans on ALL things.

Washman, the only time I ever saw Rinso was in the movie Mommie Dearest where Christina is in the laundry room and Joan tells her she has to work while going to college.

Ben-- I know, right? I've been very frugal the past 8 or 9 months, so this was apparently my week to splurge.  New washer, new detergent---now it's back to tightening the purse strings.

Wisk Deep Clean Original:  OK, my bad.  Still baffled by the suds-o-rama that was a load of whites washed in the SQ (five deep rinses and still sudsy), I shone a flashlight into the Wisk's measuring cap.  There are five very hard-to-see markings, numbered 1-5.  2 is for medium loads (and the amount used to determine how many doses per jug); 3 is for large loads.  The instructions say to "add more for heavily-soiled loads."

For the load in question, I had unwittingly filled the cap to just past line 3.  Obviously too much.  Plus that load had 1/2-cup of WalMart's concentrated liquid chlorine bleach (1/2 cup concentrated = 3/4 cup regular strength bleach) in it.  It will be interesting to see if the bleach exacerbated the sudsing problem.

I washed a load of dress shirts last night (line 2 in Wisk cap) on Permanent Press and sudsing wasn't a problem.  Ditto for a load of sheets washed in hot water on the Normal cycle this morning.

I'll wash a super-stained load of kitchen whites tomorrow with Wisk, adding more due to the heavily-soiled nature of the load, plus 1/2-cup of concentrated bleach.  We'll see if Mount Vesuvius erupts again, LOL.

Gotta say....liking the Speed Queen.  If it had a suds-saver and a 1000-rpm spin, I could maybe, possibly even consider it as a daily driver.  It uses so much hot water (and water in general), and I'm equally startled by both the brevity of the wash cycle (about 30 minutes) and the increased length of the dry cycle.  Even longer than for clothes spun in the Frigidaire Immersion Care...which was, in turn, longer than loads spun at 1300 rpm in the Frigidaire front-loader.  And there's more lint in the dryer filter on loads washed in the SQ, so it is obviously not as gentle to fabrics as the front-loader.

But it is fun having a "vintage" washer in the house.

Is my GOTO liquid detergent. Falling back to Persil or Tide HE for whites.
