Finally had some time to begin working on the 641C dryer I obtained earlier in the month. Started on top and took a peek where the timer sits. Lots of lint and the indicator bulb was broken.

You can see some lint did fall into the heater coils and was baked.

This might be the reason why the lint got in the coils. Hope I can find a replacement.

Pic of the interior. Looks like new.

Now to obtain supplies. I think the the door gasket might be a little challenging.

It looks like the seal is the same as found on a DE700/701. The one on our DE700 is in pretty rough shape and they've discontinued new ones. I've got one on our DE701 that appears to have seen little to no use. I'm tempted to pull it off to see if someone can fabricate a few more of them...

Early HOH-door gaskets

swestoyz's profile picture
Hey guys -

One quick heads up on the gasket (312238) you previously mentioned. In 1966, the HOH dryers received a re-designed door gasket, which is not compatible on the 1965 and earlier 641/700 HOH series dryers.

The earlier gasket kit (302448) was discontinued even before Whirlpool bought out Maytag. You might want to check an older Maytag dealer in your area. They may have a few still collecting dust in their parts rack. That's how I found a few for myself.

Thankfully you can still find the front and rear felt seals fairly easily.

Good luck!

(Quick note for the archives - the lower end pre-66 HOH dryers (models with the single piece door) use a completely different gasket than the two piece HOH models, AND the water dryers uses two different gaskets all together depending on model! Crazy stuff. Maytag had enough sense by 1966 to use the same gasket on all dryer models, up until the Stream-of-Heat Big Load dryers.)

The 2nd link appears to be 302448 (or a compatible version). I had ordered a 312238 and it fit, but honestly it did not work as well, so I popped the old door gasket back on. What amazes me is that parts still appear to be plentiful for the A700, but the DE700/701 seem to have most parts listed as NLA. Go figure, right?

The second site does list the item as NLA.  You can give them a call but more than likely they're out of stock for good.

Hang in there. Call around to some of the older Maytag stores in your area, or better yet, stop on in. They may have something on a shelf somewhere in the back. You never know.

Well, have the dryer apart and just examined the shaft that is connected to the drum. Everything looks good with little wear. Even the rubber washers are soft. My question is what type of lube / grease / oil do I use to lubricate the shaft and the interior in which the shaft goes into?

641C Belts

Not a collector, but admire how well built it is and the simple design of this dryer.
Helping a friend stop the belts from squeaking. It looks to us like the belts are both too short, because the idler is out of position.

The belts installed are 3-11013 & 3-11012.
Are these the correct size ?

Thanks for any help

Rick

Thanks for the quick reply.
On our dryer, the shaft on the picture in reply #4 of this thread is up too high, and can't slide down. I wondered if it was upside down, but it's the same as yours.

Thanks again

Drive Belts For MT HOH Dryer

combo52's profile picture

You have the correct belts, when properly installed the shorter of the two belts goes from the idler pulley to the drum pulley, the longer belt from the motor, blower and around the large part of the idler pulley, this larger belt should be very loose, the shorter drum drive belt very tight. If your dryer still has the aluminum motor pulley try to find a replacement motor pulley, MT changed from the fast wearing aluminum motor pulleys on the later HOH dryers to steel pulleys to reduce slippage and performance problems.

Once the drum is reattached, next is taking care of the HOH and back of the dryer panel. You can see the dirty filter at left, in the pic. I believe I can use a furnace filter of the same size.

Maytag recommends painting the lower inside of the heater shroud with Hi-Temperature silver paint to reduce the chance of coins etc shorting out the heater. I do not know how good it does but it sure makes the shroud look great.

Look up the thread where I restored a DE750 a year or so ago where I did this.

Blowing Bearing?

My 641c has a low growl, that seems to be getting louder with time. I'm pretty sure its coming from the blower assembly. Does anyone know if this sound is typical (which I suspect not)? If not, I assume a bearing is going bad and if so, what's the best way to approach fixing?

Post# 718599 , Reply# 52   11/30/2013 at 17:09 (3,770 days old) by mrx ()

You can see the similarity between those and the old 1970s Hoover Tumble Dryers in this market. A lot of the layout (particularly the heating elements) and even components look very familiar.

This would appear to be some kind of a derivative of that design scaled down to European cabinet size and with some other modifications to the blower setup. It also had the filter at the back of the drum.

Posted on YouTube by matchbox3236h

Similar blue porcelain drum too

There was one of these machines in my grandparent's house until the late 1990s and it had worked perfectly from the 1970s onwards! My grandad used to open it up once a year for a good vacuum cleaning to remove lint and it needed the occasional fan-belt change (the fan was directly behind the drum on those machines, driven from a pulley on the drum motor.

I replaced my motor pulley a week ago. The old was was worn down significantly, slowing the dryer down as the belt slipped. I replaced it with a NOS steel one and it made a HUGE difference. The dryer performs much better, speeding up dry time on average 10 minutes. Definitely change out the motor pulley.

Well now that the holidays are over, I once again continued with the dryer. Replaced the motor pulley and converted the dryer to 110-120 so I could see if it would run. It did, but one items that didn't work was the timer. It would not advance. Nor will the bell ring when I advanced it to off. So, need to find a replacement timer. Interesting that the time housing itself is missing the model number. I can't, so far, remove the screw in the front of the dial. It's stuck. Maybe it's there.

I did pull the timer itself. Maybe I can just replace that.

It sounds like you may just need a timer MOTOR, if you could post a picture of just the motor I can see if I have one, a picture of both sides of the timer motor and whether it is a CCW or CW turning motor and the number of teeth on the little gear on the TM would be helpful.

The bell will ring when you manually rotate the dial. The dryer has to be on the Wash n' Wear setting for the bell to ring. The contacts that ring the bell are very small in the switch housing and fail quite easily over time. I even bought a NOS timer and the bell contacts didn't engage. I had to disassemble the timer switch and set/align the contact spacing myself. If you like tinkering with mechanical electronics, I suggest you disassemble the switch yourself. Most likely, all you will need to do is some contact cleaning (fine grit sand paper and rubbing alcohol). It can be tedious work though if you need to set the contact spacing as the contact spacing has a small margin for error.

Thank you Bob331. I don't think I had it set on wash and wear. I will try it on that setting and see if it rings. My luck I will have to take apart the timing housing.

If you increase the settings of the video to HD it looks better. The clothes I used were dry. Wanted to use them as props.

#2. But I first I have to finish a bearing replacement on a Maytag Neptune front load washer. Been sitting in the basement for 4 years.

Hey John, Jason, or anyone,

If you find a second door gasket I need one for my de702 also. These rubber parts are difficult to find!

The one thing that I always do is...

...take a fairly thick felt drum seal, and using hi-temp glue, glue it around the outside of the drum lip so that all of the heat from the elements go through the heat holes in the front of the drum. This will also keep anything from falling into the heaters from the inside of the drum. Sorry I didn't mention this earlier, but haven't been on in a while.

Hi Will, I cross referenced and found that this part would work on my 641C. I don't know if this one would fit your dryer. I do have a continuing search on E-bay for the correct part / # . Someday I might be lucky.
