hey fellow club members I may have my dream machine in my mists. I had a customer come into the store on Monday to purchase a new washer and dryer. I asked her what she had and she said it was a Magic Chef washer and dryer they both worked but she said the washer was noisy and the dryer took to long to dry. Delivery guys are going to save the washer for me I hope it is a burpalator. from what years did Norge build that machine for Magic Chef? my customer said the tub was huge.

". . . she said the washer was noisy . . ."

Seems like a solid indication that it's a Norge.

Huh, that could have been me... LOL I have a set of Magic-Norge-Tags that the customer's complaints fit perfectly!!

The washer might, like mine, be one of the last Magic Chefs to roll out of Herrin, IL. I bought ours in 2001 when we bought our apartment in Montreal.

That I bought new. A Herrin unit. I was very pleased with it's performance.
Sold it with the old house though.

I've had a couple of these in the garage over the years.  They sure can wash a big load in that cavernous tub.  I had one that was a BOL machine with water temps on the dial and two water levels.  Depending on the age and model, some of the baskets are epoxy coated, not porcelain and I saw a few that the epoxy was falling off in sheets, leaving behind rusty steel.  Nice.

Have fun with it, they are ruthless agitators and the "loud" operating sounds is music to many of our ears.

Isn't noise one of the signatures of a burpilator Norge?

no holes on the bottom of the agitators skirt....not a burpilator!

question would be....Can one be added?

and the tub looks very modern, maybe white plastic, not what was used with the burpilator agitator.  But the overall agitator shape sure looks burpilator, but it's missing the holes for sure.

"...But the overall agitator shape sure looks burpilator"

lets call it burpilator-ish.

I'm no expert on burping washers.  I think you're looking for a model from the 60s?

This machine looks very ...19XX throw-away.  It almost looks like a White Westinghouse made product.

I came across one similar today, while scanning the classifieds.  Seriously, it looked like 2 years old and Cheaply made.  Is that what you are looking for?

I seriously wish you the best in finding what you are looking for.

Whether it burps, belches, farts, or requires adult diapers, I'm sure we've talked about the type of washer you're looking for.

I guess I must really be old...I remember working on those and having a Magic Chef washer and dryer set I bought back in about '85 or '86 right after they quit making the HUGE wide dryers they used to have and made them the same size as the washer. The dryer was much quieter than the old style ones, but the washer still had the solenoid that made such a startling bang when it would go into spin and would REALLY make a loud bang if you opened the lid during spin and it stopped immediately. The washer DID have the agitator that would shoot water out of the side at the top of the agitator where the lint filter sat on top. It didn't however work like the burpatator ones that would push water up the top of the agitator though into the lint pan. It was a good, but noisy washer. Sure did wash well, but had more linting than most I think. The one you have is when they first started with that particular mechanism for Magic Chef. It looks as if your machine has a plastic tub, but the first ones they made still had the metal tubs. Was a little later when they changed to plastic. Also at first they kept the same type of agitator, but later on they changed it and it no longer looked like the old style ones. Even in the 70s when that type of agitator was abundant in all those machines they made some without the lint filter built into the agitator, but usually they were toward the bottom of the line machines.

mine still has the porclen tub the model number is W20HN2 SERIAL EC210473. The agitator unscrews just like the wards looks like the same agitator but without the holes in the bottom. Another tag on the machine says Magic Chef Cleveland Tennessee trying to figure out if this was a Norge built machine. it does have a fabric dispenser that sits on top of the agitator.

It was built in Herrin, IL, at the Norge plant.

Well you have one of the first machines that has the "new" style mechanism that was used after they abandoned the Norge mechanism they had used since about '63. It is much quieter than the older mechanism and has no solenoid for the spin brake.

Post# 715815 , Reply# 20   11/17/2013 at 06:17 (3,783 days old) by brucelucenta ()

They used that same type of mechanism in the later models of Maytag too.

can anybody tell me by looking at the model and serial number when my machine was manf where is the best place to get replacement parts? need the chrome end cap on the left hand side and I need a hinge for the lid. Thx Mike

Post# 716903 , Reply# 25   11/21/2013 at 17:55 (3,779 days old) by tsteves5 ()

It looks like it was made in November of 1989. This makes sense to me. I had a Wards version of this washer with a metal tub, black control panel, and newer style agitator. I think mine was purchased new around 1991.

Mine lasted about 12 years of heavy use before the transmission went kaput. I also seem to remember bypassing a defective lid switch after a few years.

End Cap

Your left control panel end cap seems to be a bit illusive. I don't see any in stock using my normal parts providers. Perhaps you can use a different colored one and paint it. There is one on eBay right now.

just to bring everyone up to speed, hope to have my machine by the middle of next week. I ran off a copy of the owners manual today, in the features was the following self cleaning lint filter, porclin tub but plastic outer tub, the instructions say that with the way the holes are designed in the inner tub that when it goes into spin the lint is held in the outer tub untill the washer drains. i still would like to find a burpalator agitator with the lint catcher to put on the machine. there is a guy on you tube that has the exact washer that i am getting. it is under Magic Chef 20 lb washer. the fact that it is a norge built washer I'm happy my foster mom had a Norge in 1971.
