After three years of not hearing a word, my favorite recycler called yesterday and said he got in something that I need to look at. I went down this morning to pick it up.

Here's a little Riddle for a hint:

Drop in the quarter and pull the big ring, the sprial smackalation will soon sing. When all lights are out and the clothes are spun so very dry, some wont even need to fly high on the line.

It's a Seeburg 222, 160 selections, stereo tube amplifier.

But it could a coin-op Easy with some kind of high speed extraction.

Cool! I've never seen an Easy up close before. That's quite an agitator; even more curvacious than the vintage preggers Roto-Swirl.

I take it the 1960 coin-op Frigidaire had a rubber-ring agitator, originally?

Congrats, Robert!

Robert!! yee haw!!! I couldn't quite make out the script on the Easy's temp buttons. Please elaborate. Is the coin-op a 9 lb or 12 lb. machine. And cool it has more than just the basic hot and warm washes with warm rinse. Is it's cycle the same length of time as your Superduty coin-op? And congratulations don't even seem appropriate.

I'm confused...

The Frigidaire is a Unimatic? If you come up with 5 more, I can replace my Maytags with them!

The Easy is not a coin-op machine, right? Which manufacturer does the Easy serial plate say it is from? That the agitator is so fat and the spiral fins aren't quite as dramatic makes me think this is a Hotpoint sourced machine. Love love love that control panel. What a funky way to select a cycle!

Congrats!

"From the flimsiest of fabrics to the grimiest work shirt, Easy's Spiralator washing action gets out all the dirt! Anything that you can wash, Easy does it better!"

And I had no idea there were two machines until you told me! LOVE the Frigidaire coin-op with the oversized Cissell coin box; now your wash will be all done in 18 minutes with little tangling due to the Deep-Action agitator!! What an incredible find; now we'll have to find you the "matching" turquoise Cissell double-load dryer as well...;-)

I'm especially interested in learning more about the Velva-Power transmission and how it works. For now I'll pose a couple of intriguing questions: Is the mechanism truly direct-drive like the Unimatic, or is there a rubber coupler of sorts like those machines we're all too familiar with now? Also, is this a reversing-motor design, or is there a direct KER-CHUNK into spin? The reason I ask is that there appears to be a Beam-style clothes guard, and the lid closely resembles one from a late-model 1970's solid-tub SQ.

Here is the latest update on the Easy. The good news is the motor and transmission seems to work just fine. But the outer tub to pump hose is bad and its a very specialized hose. I found a good one in my parts-o-rubber box, but in order to install the hose you have to remove the cabinet top and wash tub. I will attempt to do this tomorrow and take some more pictures along the way.

This is not a Beam, nor is it a Hotpoint designed washer, its Easy's very own. You can sort of see the Easy Velvapower Motor/Pump/Tranmssion assembly in this shot below.

Cool...looks very nice under her skirt! Looks like Whirlpool wasn't the first to use a horizontally-mounted motor to accomplish the direct-drive design, and Easy appears to have done it without a coupler as well as far as I can see!!

This is a dumb question, but is that a separate electric "suds pump" to the right, or is it the water valve?

Congratulations!

That Easy is simply amazing. I've never seen a control panel like that before. It almost looks like a Timeline.

I've always wonder why Easy automatics never enjoyed such a large market share.

I'm also drooling over that Frigidaire co-op. I love the color and the windowed lid. I agree that it looks like the three ring pulsator has been replaced by a Jetcone.

I hope that the restoration of both of these machines is Easy (pun intended).

I'm looking forward to more pics.

Enjoy!

Nice finds there. One question...

"Set cycle indicator to position desired by moving selector lever up and down in "select" section before the "off" position"

...huh?

I'm thoroughly confused. What does that mean, and how does one actually select the cycle and turn the unit on?

Hi Robert

Another amazing find, love the timeline control ring, so is it as simple as pull ring out to desired programme and push up to start??

The mechanism is very interesting, its the same as Hotpoint did on their first twinnies and single tub wringer machines from the 60`s, direct drive into the gearbox on one side and the other directly into the Filter Flow Pump...a bitch to work on for me, probably not for you...LOL

ALSO , was looking at some 60`s Washer Reports from The Ideal Home year books and came across a McClary-Easy top Loader, priced £125, dryer £99, 9lb load, Suds Saver etc, this one has only two rotary controls mounted on a black back panel, Where these washers known as McClary and what was the connection??

Cheers, Mike

p.s. Anybody explain "Pachinko"??

Austin, no that is the water valve not the suds pump. What is very strange about the water valve in this machine is it is mounted in the FRONT of the washer! You need extra long fill hoses for them to reach the valve! Now that's a silly design.

As for the timer and how it works this should help, I was also confused at first, but its actually very simple...

Wow! That gives me hope that there are more Easy washers hidden in the basements of central New York! Yay!

I bet the bigger ramps on the Easy Spiralator give better wash drama than the Hotpoint Silhouette.

The Frigidaire is a Unimatic?

Mike: Pachinko is Japanese pinball. It is played vertically rather than horizontally. They are usually quite ornate and colourful. The older ones are much more cool than the new ones (as it is with washing machines too!). Search "pachinko" on ebay to see a few.

Apex Coin-ops

John (coldspot66) wondered "Apex?????? Did they make coin-op machines????? I doubt it!!!!!!!!"

I could have sworn that I once read a post from someone who described the "commercial Apex washers" that were in his apartment building's laundry rooms. It only took me three searches of the archives (pats self on the back) to find it! I've never heard of a "commercial" washer that wasn't coin operated, so I would be surprised to hear that those machines were NOT coin operated. (Unfortunately, the poster doesn't post here any more and is no longer listed in the user profiles, so we can't ask him.) For what it's worth, here's a copy of his post:

"Post# 25217-12/21/2002-09:26 ||| rossroberts (Palm Springs, California)
SUBJECT: RE: POD (POD)
MESSAGE: In the apartment complex where I grew up, they had commercial Apex washers with bouncing tub. The lids had round glass windows. The water would start come into the tub. Half way through the fill up, the tub would start to bounce. You could see the action through the glass lid. Then the wash action stopped and a second or two later, the tub would spin. There was a wash and two rinse cycles, followed by final spin."

How cool is that? It would be awesome of someone from the Club would find one of those machines.

Mike

Peter, yes the 1960 Coin-op Frigidaire is a Unimatic, all Frigidaire commercial washers were Unimatics until 1964.

And yes, Apex did in fact make a coin operated washer.

Now that I have the machine apart I will do an update on the Mechanicals of the Easy later on tonight.

WELL I'VE NEVER!
I found my Easy rated in the 1962 CU Washer Report (someone at CU is going to get smacked). Hmmmm lots of suds, I bet that agitation is just wicked!...

What did Consumer Reports know!?!

They didn't like Philco or Kelvinator either!!!

The fact that a Time Line type of timer was available as late as 1962 is simply amazing.

I hope that the restoration process is Easy (pun intended) and I hope to see it in action (in videos) in the very near future.

Sudsing: Doesn't surprise me; look at the width of those curvacious fins! You'd better wear rain gear if you operate it with a half-full tub of water, LOL. I didn't think it would be possible to create more of a water-ruckus than a Kelvinator.

Water inlet deflector problem: if you get the chance, can you get a photo of it? Either I'm not understanding what they're talking about or it's not visible in the tub photo, above.

What an interesting machine! The control panel with the Operator's Ring is too cool. Talk about standing out from the pack...

Thanks for the explanation of the control ring. Now, what does one do if one accidentally pulls it out too far and gets into the wrong cycle? Is there a way to reset it before it turns on? For example, pull it out *all* the way to reset?

All in all, the whole 1950s era was a time of much interesting diversity in a whole range of technologies. Things hadn't converged to the present stage of uniformity. The control ring design you have there is almost an extreme case. But if you assume that people vary in the abilities & needs that go into the human side of the human interface design question, the 1950s era machines were more accommodating than today's: people could choose from a much wider range of different user interfaces than those available today.

(I for one have still not gotten used to, and probably won't get used to, flat-screen touch keys with digital readouts for anything except a microwave, but even that took a while. A microwave with rotary knob for power level select, and another rotary knob for a timer, would be quite sufficient.)

Does this mean.........

Hmmm, With Jon's EASY in secret storage, does this mean that Robert is dethroned as queen of all washer queens, OR will it not count until Jon gets his EASY out of the closet?

I love Easies

mickeyd's profile picture
Re:Crown for Jon or Robert--looks like it's a wash ! R's super uni has 7 sprays, and now they both have an 8-spraying Easy.

Jon Jetcone, did you know that the first easies--the SPINDRIERS-- used spray rinsing exclusively, accomplished by needle sprays, hundreds of them, jetted out of a long cone that ran the length of the spinner.

In the mid-nineties, Whirlpool made a model that had a conservation cycle using only spray rinses. Did anyone buy it or see it in operation?

The spinner in the Easy is narrow, so the needle sprays are effective, giving you clear water in 5 to 7 minutes.

Mikeyd hey, big welcome to a fellow upstater!!

I did not know Easy's had that spray feature, the only Easy machine I have ever played with is GregM's and you have to aim the nozzle down the hole, just like the twin tub Hoovers in Mikes' Garage.

I may have a lead on a very early easy I had the 1918 Copper Model but it did not have that feature , how early was it??

jon, that was the economy model. GregM hasn't lived . You've got to see this thing. Does greg's not even have the faucets,?

I'm talking about the Easies of the 50's 60's 70's. I don't know when they stopped making them. The regular models had two chrome faucets, one long one for draining and suds-return and a shorter one for filling and rinsing, all settings engraved in the chrome plate that held the sviveling faucets. It was --IS-- a beautiful thing. I'm hoping to be able to post pictures by next Friday

Greg lives

I just checked his profile and among his millions are three--yes?-- Easies. I bet one must have the jet cone. Again they were standard; only the economy model had the short ceramic fist at the bottom of the spinner. I have one, never used it.
I have en extra spinner with the jetcone. Maybe greg would like to have it.

Lucky '7' Frig Coin-Op find

Brings back childhood memories of 1971 when the whole family went to Beach Haven, NJ (aka the Jersey Shore). It rained almost the whole week. Mom didn't want to tote home a bunch of smelly towels and swim trunks so off to the coin-op...all Frigidaires like this one. 3 or 4 that folks didn't load properly so their little unbalance lights aglow. The window action is so cool! Like the saying goes...good things come to those that wait! Congratulations Uni!!!

That Easy timer ring: It's overly complicated, strange, unnecessary, and getting parts for it was probably a chore even when it was new.

And that, my friends, is what's missing from modern appliances.

Look down the rows of washers at any dealer:
SmallknobSmallknobSmallknobBigknob. Reverse it for dryers.

Let's go back to the days when manufacturers made things different just for the sheer hell of it!

Veggie--How I remember those glory days when every machine was soooo different. Maybe those days will come back.

Westy-- If you turn down the water a little, and perfectly center the faucet, you should not get wet. I never put the top on because it's so much fun to watch. If I put my face too close, sometimes my whiskers get a little dewy.
