Hi listers,
We bought our MAYTAG washer Mod. A512 Serie 04 Serial #987052 back in 1989.
Never had a serious technical problem until last week when we called the insurance company where all our electrical appliances are insured, who determined that we must replace the gear for a refurbished gear (there is no stock of new parts for these washers in Israel). The problem is that the insurance company does not cover gears in washers with a load capacity over 10 Kg. In Israel they work only in Kg and not in cubic feet. We claimed that there's no way we can load more than 6 Kg of laundry in our MAYTAG A512. They sent an expert technician who measured the drum's height 38 cm and claimed that our washer is a 10 Kg model, compared to other Maytag washers where the drum height 33 cm can accomodate 8 Kg of laundry.
Some experts said that our washer is a 3.6 cu.ft. and other experts said it's a 2.9 cu.ft.
Is there aby way we can receive a creditable answer explaining what is the load capacity of our washer A512?
If possible I will appreciate receiving also a copy of the A512 brochure and its specs where I can read the manufacturers information in this matter.
Thank you!

Check the Automatic Ephemera site in the link below.  It may contain literature that will provide specs for your machine.

Andy, might you have access to something that will confirm the capacity for this machine?  I know it's nowhere near 3.6 c.f. and is probably even less than 2.9 c.f.

Might be 2.9 CF - but no more than that

I know that the last Maytag "Dependable Care" models (through 2006) were rated at 2.9 CF - and were "Large capacity" machines.  As a result, the most that an A512 could be is 2.9 CF because I don't think any of the "true" 1966 - 2006 Maytags were ever bigger than the last "Dependable Care" models.  I am not sure if an A512 was a Standard capacity or a Large Capacity tub.  If an A512 is a Standard Capacity machine, then I'd bet it is more like 2.5 CF.

Maytag tub size

I'm not sure about your particular model, but my A806 uses 19 gallons of water on a full fill. There are 7.48 gallons of water per cubic foot. 19 divided by 7.48 is 2.54 cubic feet.

I realize that the tub is actually somewhat larger than this, but in a top loader this is the capacity that is actually used.

I hope this helps.
