Yes, the unlucky streak continues... Sigh...
I was frustrated with the Inglis so I relegated it into the 'corner of shame' in the basement. But to make room, I needed to flip machines around a bit, so I thought, well, why not bring the Maytag back into service? HA! I bit off a wee bit more than I could chew. Again. |

This Maytag washer and dryer got loaned out to a furniture store in Sherbrooke earlier this year for a 50th Anniversary event. I 'doctored' the wiring in both machines so that only the panel lights would work when plugged in. I didn't want to think about having a machine sitting with a buzzing water inlet solenoid for 4 months!!
Anyway, when attempting to put the original wiring back in place, I managed to rip the entire top off the transformer for the fluorescent light. I was NOT happy... However, I did managed to splice some thin copper wire to the remaining wires coming from the transformer to the terminals and re-glue the terminal block. Piece of cake... Better still, it did actually work, but the light seemed kinda dim. I suspect the tube is weak from the continuous display duty. So I changed the front panel for one with a grey-based kick plate that I got from Ben in Iowa this summer. It looked great so I thought, well, let's do some laundry... |

So I set the washer to the LOW water level and went on my merry way to get a cup of tea. It seemed to take a LOOOOONNNNGGGG time for the washer to start up, so I went back down to the basement to investigate. I was just in the nick of time! The friggin' tub was flooding!!
It gets better - I couldn't get the darn thing to drain! It started to spin, but not a drop of tub water was draining out. I had a bit of a spill-over situation and wound up having to siphon the water out. Boy was I steamed... I went through the 'what caused this list' and I assumed I had done something to the water level control when I had the console cover off. Well, for once (write this down in the history books!) I was right! Well, kinda... The pressure hose from the tub to the water level switch was cracked! It was probably already brittle when I got the machine and the moving and jostling around when the machines got moved out and back in again probably did it. |

No pictures for this, but I bypassed the water level control and got the washer to agitate. This was a good thing. The timer ran and when the machine cycled through to the spin before rinse - some remaining water actually drained out of the tub!
I thought it was a fluke so I filled the tub up again, bypassed the level control and managed to get agitation AND a drain with the spin! I don't get why I was not able to make it drain when I had the overflow... Does a Maytag need to agitate before it will drain?? And for the Maytag folks out there, would anyone happen to have the part numbers for the water level pressure hose and the panel light transformer? I need the hose, for sure, but I figure I should replace the transformer while I am at it! |

This is the only source I could find for a direct replacement ballast transformer. Unfortunately they're not cheap, and when I ordered mine it was a special order that took about three weeks to arrive. Of course you can replace the transformer for much less if you're willing to do without the tabs for the solderless connectors, but being a bit of a purest I just couldn't do it. I really had the wind knocked out of my sails yesterday so I decided not to mess with any machines today - I did some parts-hunting instead!
I found what I believe is the current part number for the "air dome and tube" which connect the tub to the water level control on an A702 washer. The part number I've come up with is 212942 and I'm going to try a local parts dealer in Montreal when I back in town. I found the ballast transformer part number too, N200862. However, I found another thread showing a replacement one from Grainger (thanks, Kenmore71 (Mark) for posting that information back in April!!). The price is reasonable, but I can't seem to order it 'cause I live in Canada... GRRRR! I'll maybe try an electronics place I know of in Montreal, too. So, the Maytag may be the first of my three 'patients' to get back into service in 2014! Stay tuned... |

I always replace air tubes in restorations for just this reason, but I just use fuel injection or vacuum hose, something of the same inner diameter always works. But you live in metric land , you'll need english land to replace so that it has about the same air volume. If you wanna send me down a section of hose I probably can cut some from stock or Ben can get you whack when you get that transformer from him.

Jeff - thanks for the information - I was soooo mad that I didn't think about belt slippage due to the overflow!
Jon - I think I found a replacement air dome at a great parts store in Montreal - the whole darn pipe was brittle so I opted to replace the whole thing. I'll be replacing the one in the '57 GE when I get to that project, believe me! Ben got me the replacement transformer and sent it to my Vermont address - I nominate him for 'elf of the year' this Christmas! LOL Seriously, thanks again, Ben!! |

Jon, don't worry, we can still buy hoses in size like 1/4" or 5/16" here too! And everything we need to build houses is still sold (and hopefully will be for a long time!) in regular US measures. Plumbing is in inches only and so are the other materials. You need plywood, it still sold in 4x8', 3/8" 1/2", 5/8" or 3/4" thickness. We still build houses with 8' 2x6" studs and I don't think this will change soon. The only problem is that we haven't been teaching kids anything about the Imperial/US systems for over 30 years. And many of those who don't build or repair stuff have no clue about it just like many Europeans! I had fun when I saw two friends of mine (both accountants) trying to measure everything in centimeters while remodeling their bathrooms. And they were born in the 1970s so they are about the same age as I am!
It reminded me a friend from France when he arrived here (he learned otherwise since as he needs to use the US system constantly at his job and he worked quite a bit at renovating homes he bought! ). But he and his wife are still not too familiar with how to set the oven temperature here and after a few years of undercooked meals, they decided to buy a newer range with an electronic thermostat that can be set to show the temps in Celcius because they were still confused with their range with a thermostat graduated in Fahrenheit only! Unfortunately, since they switched, they keep getting error codes instead of temperatures on their new range's electronic thermostat! |

The needed parts are down in Ogden now - the parts place in Montreal got me the air dome on Wednesday as promised and the transformer arrived in Vermont Tuesday.
Phil and I did a 'parts run' yesterday and zipped into Vermont then dropped my goodies off at the house in Ogden. They'll be ready and waiting for me when we get back on the 31st! Now, let's all hope I don't mess anything further up when I tinker with the 'Tag... |

thanks for the info and fascinating stories!! I'll have measure my kitchen in centimeters someday lol!
Isn't it nice having parts in stock?? Gray's got me the last tub seal for Chester left in the distributors warehouse - MINT UNUSED! 2-165 or now actually 200165.
I can't wait for all this holiday nonsense to get over and gone so I can get back to washing machines!

So, after surveying the ice-storm damage around the house in Ogden and ensuring that the inside plumbing system was still intact, I figured I should get going on the three machines I left hanging before we took off to the UK for the Christmas holidays.
I like to pick my battles, so I started off with an easy one: the '65 Tag whose tub runnethed over and whose transformer I broke. I was able to find the air dome hose in Montreal and Ben very kindly sent me a replacement transformer! I got both parts installed in no time flat and I am thrilled to say that I have my A702 back in service! I need a new fluorescent tube (the original one finally gave up the ghost) but that'll happen next weekend. Now, those other two 'projects' were a whole other story.... |
