Hey Guys,

Thanks to a very generous offer, and a 1000 mile roundtrip this weekend that was a blast, this gem is now sitting in the driveway out front. I thought I'd make this one fairly easy to guess...maybe..

Okay... hint #2: It's 300+lbs with a built-in heater.

You guys are very close, it's definitely a combo!

Final hint: It was offered in both gas and electric, has a door on the top as well as the front, and only came in the colors yellow, pink and white.

Hey, I should get some credit too. I guessed a Lady Kenmore Combo from the late 1950s. The Kenmore was the UPSCALE version of this combo because it had timed dispenseers as well as AUTOMATIC dry cycles rather than timed on the WP.

And congratulations. Another one saved.

Well I know it didn't come from Minneapolis cuz that round trip is slighly less than 500 miles lol.

And it is one awesome machine.

Hi Cory, Congratulations on another great find. When we were at Roberts in December we had had great fun using his. We washed three down jackets in one load with plenty of room to spare. That tub is huge. Is this an electric or gas dry? I bet that was a beast to move, I suppose it was in a basement?? Have fun. Terry

This machine is so wonderful for a collection. They hardly made any noise, at least the one and only time I ever saw one in Pennsylvania in 1982.

congrats

Swoon, Drool ...

Wow!

What an awesome find!

What were they thinking when they designed this machine? It has to be on the heaviest machines ever built. That being said, it's one of my all time favorite machines. Thanks for saving it!

Does it still work? Both as a washer and a dryer? Or will it need work to get it up and running?

Is this the gas or the electric version?

How did you find it? Where did you find it?

First Bob's Easy and now a Whirlpool combo! I shouldn't say this too loudly but 2006 is starting out to be a very good year. Let's hope it continues!

Mike

Thanks for the compliments guys! This baby was rescued from the very south of Indiana out of its original cellar. It hasn't been connected for at least a decade so who knows its condition? Thankfully, the current (second) owner checked the net and found that these things are collectable, otherwise I heard what its fate was going to be, and it didn't sound pretty. Very cool guy by the way-

I plan on giving this one a full tear down, clean-up and rebuild for some dependable service when the time arrives. And thankfully, this is the electric version! -Cory

want to learn....

That is a very good looking machine. Being new here and a novice compared to some of you, I need an education on what makes it so valuable other that its styling.

Congratulations! You are going to have fun. Make sure that you put water in the pump before starting it. Let me know if your combo has the flat lint comb or if yours has the curved one. The original pumps were placed above the water level and had to suck air as well as water so they were just about the same as the pumps in the Bendix Economats where they pulled a vacuum for extraction.

My first WP came out of a friend's house. We ONLY had to move it from the carport onto the bed of a pickup. A VERY nice neighbor drove me over to get it. It took 4 teenagers to lift it. The combo rode steady all the way home. At my house, the reception from my parents was very chilly, but my father helped us lift it down on to the driveway. I had no hand truck, so I pulled and twisted the machine on a thick piece of cardboard so that the leveling feet would not tear the rug and dig into the lawn and under that a long carpet runner. I tugged the thing half-way around the house to the sliding door downstairs. I had to make a plywood ramp to get it over the tracks, but I got her inside. It was the Fall of 1968. I had to buy Allen wrenches to remove the timer dials.

You are lucky that yours is the electric drying version (the little red lightning bolt in the tuning fork is the indicator). The gas models of these are prone to porcelain failure where the lower left side of the tank sits next to the burner. It will be interesting to see, when you get inside the machine, if the little baffle on top of the heater box still opens and closes. The one I got was stuck open. Ray & Bob's mother took very good care of her husband and if he walked in the house at the end of the day while the combo was drying, she immediately popped the door latch to shut if off. That left that cherry red heating elements just glowing and the little spring on the baffle lost its springiness. The combo would not be restarted until he left the house, usually the next morning. When the machine is drying, you can look through the window toward the back, I want to say left side, and see the loops of the heating elements glowing where the hot air enters.

Have lots of fun with your monster combo. I wish I had not been forced to give up mine to get Brenda Bendix, but sometimes others call the shots.

I think I saw a machine just like this at a dry cleaner for the coin operated dry cleaning - and I know it was Whirlpool. Did I see something real or is it just a figment of my imagination? Nep
