ok so, here is the story on this bradford washing machine....

my mom was willed, a little old house from her great aunt, when she passed away, many years ago, like maybe early 1970's. the house was empty for a few years, until my mom rented the house out to her aunt (my grandpa's sister) the last 2 or 3 decades. i don't know if anything was ever boughten for the house or replaced in the house except for a refrigerator and an electric stove and maybe the dryer. but i don't really know cuz i never really went inside the house. well recently, my mom's aunt passed away and we are going to be in the process of cleaning the house out pretty soon.

we have gone to the house a couple of times to make sure that nobody has broken in or started squatting in there. and i did spot in the little washroom, an old washer. i didn't know much about it but that it was a "bradford" brand of washer. the electricity & water have been turned off on the house. so, it is dark, dirty & has alot of spiderwebs all over the house.

well, just yesterday, we made a trip out of town, to go check on this little old house & to lock it up, cuz we had to air out the house from all those years of my mom's aunt living there. i finally brought my cell phone with me & took some pictures of the washer to post on here & share with you guys.

i have to say, please forgive the blurry, bad quality of pictures, but it was dark, dirty, spider webs & scary in that little wooden backroom!!!

now from what i could see, this is a solid tubbed bradford automatic washer WITH a black agitator. i hope you enjoy the pictures.
oh and by the way, as luck would have it, when i was taking pictures, my phone wouldn't let me take anymore than like 4 or 5 pictures and then it flashed a message that the memory was too full and i had to delete some pictures, downloaded materials, or videos to take more pictures. WOULDN'T YOU JUST KNOW IT!!! ;o/

enjoy the few pictures i did take for your viewing pleasure....

control panel...

hippiedoll's profile picture
here is the right side of the control panel showing the circular timer dial (i guess??). i don't know how this washer works, as this is the 1st time that i am seeing it, through these pictures, in detail. but i'm guessing the red line turns as it is going through the different wash, spin & rinse cycles......

i forgot to mention, it has a "LIGHT" button on the left side of this circular timer dial and a "RESET" button on the right side of the circular timer dial display (or whatever you would call this?). i pushed in the "LIGHT" button and i also pushed in the "RESET" button, but then remembered that there is no electricity in the house right now. so of course, nothing happened when i pushed in either button. i am curious to know, where the light would be on this washer cuz i didn't notice a light panel or anything? i'm thinking maybe the circular timer cycle lights up?? i think that would look cool if it did! and i love that light blue color too.

it says in scroll writing:
TWO SPEED (on the bottom left side of the circular timer dial)
FIVE CYCLE (on the bottom right side of the circular timer dial)

Reminiscent of Norge.

Probably the dial is backlit and maybe the panel at base of the console and text of the buttons.

money shot???

hippiedoll's profile picture
here is what you all like to call it, the "money shot".

although to me, it doesn't look like there's much "money" here in this shot!!!
LOL....

just look at how dirty this washer is!! you can tell that by the dirtiness that, it has probably not been used in a very very long time! and there is water in the tub with bugs floating around in there and there was like dirt or dead leaves or something, sitting at the bottom of the washtub too.

you notice the black agitator and the solid tub. and that "basket weave" edge trimming around the tub. i am guessing these are tell-tale signs of a spin draining or over-filling rinse washer?? or whatever you call it.

and like i said, this is the first time i am seeing this bradford washer in detail, only through these pictures that i took. and i think i can see that, below the blue control panel, that is where the "light" panel is located. man, i wish i could drain this washer & clean it up to see if it works & how it works!!!

i can't wait til we go over there and really start to clean up the house. there are a few things that i liked over there;
there was a vintage dining table with the metal tube legs,
a pair of green glass globe lamps
a 1970's side table
a console stereo/record player
but like i said, everything is very dirty, dusty, & covered in spiderwebs!!!

there was also a brown dryer next to the washer. i think it was a kenmore dryer from like maybe the late 1970's or early 1980's. i didn't get any pictures of the dryer cuz that was way too far into that old dirty washroom and i wasn't brave enough to go in that far!!!

thanks for replying!!

i know everything depends on personal preference when it comes to washers but, in your opinion, if you have one on this brand of washer, is this a good performing washer??

i know i mentioned bradford to someone else before and they said that bradfords weren't the best washers.

any comments or opinions....

It's one of the most unique machines I've seen for a long time.

IIRC Bradford was the WT Grant's brand of major appliances. During a period that I'll remember as a golden era of department stores, our local Grants, Western Auto and many stores that I can't remember the name of were selling their own brand of white goods. I don't remember solid-tub Grants machines, but I do remember the ones that had white agitators in the same shape as the one you have pictured above in huge perforated washbaskets. They also had a cheap version of the Filter-Flo style lint removal system. The flumes looked like average black garden hoses that had been cut to measure with a fishing knife.

I wonder what the record was for number of brands of washing machines in a year of the US market. It still seems to me that there were never more brands tested by CU than for the washer edition of the 1969 volumes.

Bradford Was Sold By:

danemodsandy's profile picture
W.T. Grant, a chain of stores that no longer exists. Bradford was their "house brand," meaning they had stuff made to their specifications and no one else sold it. They went belly-up in the '70s when they loosened up their credit requirements in an attempt to expand their business and got stuck with a lot of bad debt.

Bradford appliances could be very decent, if you elected for the nicer ones. A cheap Bradford anything was about as cheap as it got.

We had a Bradford console stereo when I was a kid. My dad worked for RCA and usually got deals, but when my mom started campaigning for a nice stereo, he couldn't find a deal, and when the Mom Wheel started squeaking, it seriously needed to be greased. So he sent her to Grant's.

We never had any of their major appliances, though, just the stereo and a couple of fans and some clothing purchases.

P.S.: There are members here who have restored machines that were just as dirty and neglected as this one is, believe it or not.

i'm just sorry they weren't better pictures and that my d*mned phone hadn't stopped up on me, so that i could've taken more, better pictures. but like i said, it was dark & SCARY in there!!! and it was just me & my mom. so, i took as best of pictures as i could without going too far into that backroom, that's connected off the bathroom.

and i just remembered, that when my d*mned phone decided to quite taking anymore pictures, i told my mom to get her phone so that i could take more pictures. i tried to use the flashlight on my phone to get good lighting. let me grab my mom's phone and send the pictures to my email so that i can try to post the pictures to this thread.

dirty & neglected....

hippiedoll's profile picture
you know, i kinda figured, with the condition that this washer is in, with water sitting in the washtub for so long, that this washer was going to be a lost cause. especially since i know NOTHING about fixing mechanical things (other than changing a belt or hose). but....

i've had this "buzzing" feeling (for lack of better words) in my gut, that i would really like to get this washer cleaned up & tested, to see if it works. but i'm afraid that i would find it to be all rusted out with no remedy or fix....

I would guess that the "partial fill" button shortens the fill time. Being a solid tub, it probably uses timed rather than measured fill.

Went out of business in 74, I remember there store in Hickory NC well, that washer could be a Norge, but the agitator looks more like a Franklin built machine.

When I went to beauty school, there was a very large (2-story) Grant's nearby. I do remember going over from time to time for things like jeans and undershirts. Always a stop by the appliance section just to look. I remember their top-freezer fridges looked quite substantial (a friend of mine had one). Don't recall seeing washers/dryers, though. The store went under in 1975, I remember them selling-off the fixtures, overhead lights, mannequins, etc. A sad end to an American retailer. Your machine is unlikely to be older than 1975, based on my recall.

Neighbors had a Coronado washer (sold at Gambles hardware stores) that looked almost exactly like this Bradford.  Definitely from the Wizard family.  Indexing tub, lots of interesting sounds. Not a quiet machine, that's for sure.

Partial Fill:  Let machine fill to desired level, then push the button.  Fill stops; agitation begins. You'd have to come back and do the same for the rinse cycle if you wanted less than a full tub of water.

but Robert would know more about the guts than anybody else. I think his Wizard needed some TLC when he got it. All solid tubs are rare machines nowadays.

Must be fun wandering around that house.

malcolm:
for posting the youtube video. in fact, when you posted your first message, i went to google "wizard washing machine" video and came across it. cuz i got so curious to see the washing in action of a machine that could be like this bradford.

ptcruiser51:
for trying to help me figure out when this machine could be from. but did you mean that this washer is "LIKELY" older than 1975?

dadoes:
for posting that picture of robert's wizard washing machine's control panel. it has almost the exact same features as this bradford washing machine!!! what a trip! the only difference i see is that on robert's wizard washing machine, it has that "NORMAL" & "COLD WATER" lever switch. which i didn't see that on the bradford.
but even the center of the circular control knob looks almost, if not exactly, the same on both washers. that is too cool.

frigilux:
indexing tub, does that mean the tub moves around with each stroke that the agitator makes? is that what an "indexing" tub means?? i wonder how this agitator would treat "delicates"? it does say "two speed" on both washers. i wonder if it has a slower agitation or a stop & go type of agitation for the delicate cycle??
(partial fill) thank you for explaining what the partial fill option is and explaining how to use it. very interesting.

jetcone:
yeah, i know it would definitely be a challenge. but i think the fun part for me, would be cleaning it up and seeing what is what. if it needed fixing, i don't know if i would be able to do it?? but i would like to clean it up and see how it looks all cleaned up!
;o)
as for wandering around the house, it's definitely interesting, that's for sure!! i say that cuz when we were there (me & my mom) yesterday, there was one dresser in the corner and my mom looked at it and said "i think that used to be our dresser. i think it was nana's dresser? i remember seeing that dresser. and there was this one other thing in another room, and it was in a corner. i don't know what you would call it but the best way to describe it is like a mirror with a frame around it and little shelves coming out from the sides, going in towards the mirror. like for displaying knick-knacks on. when my mom seen that, she said that she was sure that was my grandma's too.
so, it was pretty cool, to look at these things that my mom said, used to be my grandma's things before. to know that my grandma had, touched, & looked at these things, in the past, and now, i'm looking at them in the present. the sad thing is that these things are definitely dirty. and are aged & falling apart.
but it's a really old house, a 4 room (kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom) a bathroom & a very small wooden laundry room that was built off of the bathroom. it is a cute little house. it has 2 front doors (one that opens to the front room and one that opens to the bedroom. it's definitely different.

the washer isn't in tucson. it is actually in douglas, arizona. about a 2 hour drive from tucson. it's a good thing i have a truck so that when we do clean the house out, i will be bringing this washer home with me, to tucson. we just haven't made any plans yet, of when we will be going back to douglas.

as for members from the group that are here in tucson, i've spoken to & met 2 members, that live here in tucson, ross & roger, really nice guys. ross told me that he doesn't fix any of his machines. and roger told me that he does all his own repairs on his washers and that if i ever needed help, to let him know.

thank you for offering to help & letting me know that you are willing to assist me in anyway you can. that is really nice of you and makes me feel more comfortable about getting this bradford in working order. thank you so much!!

as for the console stereo, no i didn't take any pictures of it. i was wanting to bring it home with me, the first time i seen it but it was pretty dirty too. and i can't even think what brand it could be. one thing i thought was wierd about it was that the power cord could be & was disconnected from the back. like how the portable radio/cd players are nowadays. the next time i go down there, i will take some pictures of the console. it wasn't anything fancy.

as for old vintage tv sets, from what i can remember, she did have one or 2 tv.s there. but not the kind like you have in your profile picture. it had been a couple of years since i had been in the house but if i were to guess what kind of tv she had, i would say maybe like 1970's or 1980's. but i didn't see the tv there anymore. it seemed like everything she had, was something that somebody had given to her, cuz they longer wanted it or they got a "new" one.

thank you again for offering your assistance if i need it. i really do appreciate that.

Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhh!!!! I thought you bought a Washer to WASH clothes! (LOL)

I know, you're just testing this machine... My dad was w/ Grants up until the company folded & we had the entire Bradford line: Washer, Dryer, Dishwasher, Fridge, Stove!

In all cheapness you could expect--right down to admitting the inferiority that they probably wouldn't have minded us going to a "real brand" had they stayed in business, as each app' quickly died, one-by-one...!

Check where the drain hose comes out on the back. If it's near the bottom, you could probably lay the hose on the floor, and drain 95% of the water.

I don't think that washer is a hopeless cause. I've seen a lot worse than that returned to life. I know RickR has resurrected a few machines that were outdoors in a scrapyard for years. Nothing is impossible.

If nothing else, all that water standing in the tub means it still holds water, so at least you know the tub seal and hopefully the inner hoses are still good.

I think franklin came out with perforated washtub~1967,so that one would be earlier-perhaps around 1964-66? A rare survivor, could be a real prize in someones collection.

we don't get down to the house very often but i am starting to get pretty anxious, to start cleaning the house out. so hopefully we'll be making trips down there more frequently! and hopefully the pictures will be better & clearer the next time i take pictures. i will definitely keep you all updated & posting pictures.

goatfarmer:
i was thinking the same thing, about the drain hose, just laying it on the ground to see how much water i could drain. i did read another "tip" on the internet that said you could also use a hose to drain the water. you connect a garden hose to a faucet and put the other end into the washtub. then turn the hose on until the water has filled up in the hose and no more air bubbles are coming out of the water. then, you turn the faucet off and bend it so that it is doubled up in your hand, about 2 feet from the faucet, so that you have a water tight bended seal in the hose. hold that kink in the hose and disconnect it from the faucet. now at this point, the hose is going to be full of water (from the washtub all the way through, to where you have it bent). now all you do is make sure that the end that was connected to the faucet, is lower than the end that is inside of the washtub. and that when you let go of the kink in the hose, it should start draining the water out. i'm sure once you lay the unconnected end of the hose, down on the ground, you have to go to the washer and hold that end down into the bottom of the washtub as it drains, to make sure it doesn't fall out or get any air in it, causing it to stop draining.

you saying that you've seen alot worse washers brought back to life, gives me a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe i might be able to get this washer "living" again!? thank you.

talk about looking at a glass as "half full" instead of "half empty"!! you are so right!! i didn't think about it like that. i was thinking, all that water in there is probably doing it's rust damage to the metal parts in the washer. but if it's been holding water for so long, it must mean that there are no leaks!?! that is a good point you made there!! thank you.

W.T. Grant has the stranges credit policy known to man. I will link that. My Aunt always bragged about their drapery sales. Hippiedoll, thanks for posting. IIRC, Robert hauled his "Wizard" all the way from Oklahoma. The thread is somewhere in the archives. Here the wiki link to W.T. Grant. can you believe it, "NO credit check". I did not remember The W.T. Grant was the second largest bankruptycy in U.S. history. No intent to hi jack.

This is a solid tub washer so laying the hose down won't help much unless there is water in the outer tub.  You can siphon the water from the washer tub or lay the machine down outside and let it spill out, then stand it up and drain the remaining water from the outer tub.  That's how we did it on the SD farm with machines full of water.  Hopefully this machine is close to an outside door and won't take too much wrangling to get it out.  Is there a leaky pipe or roof above the washer?

I don't recall Robert's "Pig" needing too much to get running properly, hopefully this one won't either.  Machines always are "put aside" for a good reason, usually a failure of some sort.  Larry at Modern Parts in OH may still have a few parts for this machine.  But the battle will of course begin with the extraction of the machine from it's crypt first - good luck and thanks for keeping us posted.

For it's age and being a solid-tub machine, it holds a surprising amount of wash.  The smallish-looking agitator is no slouch either, I've seen it rip riveted buttons from jeans.

Is that a Kenmore dryer next to it?  Looks like "Soft Heat" on the right side of it's panel.

Tub Full Of Water

You mention that the electricity was turned off. Did you mean just shut off at the board or shut off by the supply company. If just at the board, if you have or can lay your hands on a wet duty shop vac, that may be an easy way to get that tub emptied, and of course it will make the machine a lot easier to move without that water in it. Even if shut off, is there someone you can borrow a generator from to run such a vacuum? Or an extension cord from a neighbour?

After the previous disappointments you have had, it seems like this is destiny that it should fall into your hands right from in your own family. I truly hope you can get it going and in use again

Al

very interesting information on the w.t. grants stores. i have never heard of that store before, except from roger & ross, fellow members to this group, here in tucson, who said that roger bought a bradford twin tub washer from the w.t. grants store here in tucson.

thanks for posting that link to read about the store.

Is there a leaky pipe or roof above the washer:

not that i'm aware of? but i couldn't say for sure, cuz i've never really been in the house when it was raining, or when my mom's great aunt (who willed her the house) or aunt (who lived in the house last) washed clothes. to be honest, i don't think the aunt, who lived there las & recently passed away, ever washed clothes in the washer, but i don't know for sure??

as for draining the water, i think i'll try that water hose trick i read about & hopefully i can drain the water down the bathtub. if not, then the next thing would be to siphon it out :o/

i don't think i could try to get the washer out of that washroom (door), through the bathroom (another door), then through the kitchen and out the back door, with it having that much water in it. and if i tried to lay it down to drain out, i'm afraid it would be too heavy for me and i would end up dropping it and possibly damaging something or some part of the washer.

i don't think this washer was "put aside", as it is the only washer in the house. i think the last aunt that lived there probably just didn't know how to use it. you see, she was born "special needs". and wasn't the best housekeeper. so it just may work fine, after all? i won't know until we get the electricity back on, in the house.

as for the dryer next to it, yes, i think it is a brown/coppertone kenmore dryer. i'm not real sure, cuz the dryer was deeper into the dirty, dark, spider webbed, narrow washroom. and i felt very eerie/uneasy about going past the front of the washer. so, i didn't get a good look at the dryer. but i think i did flash the light from the phone over there to see it real quick and i think i remember it saying kenmore. and it was dark brown in color. that's all i could see!!

Hippiedoll, surely there is an old saucepan or large cup to dip out most of the standing water. USE GLOVES and protect your eyes. A cheap pack of disposable diapers from the dollar store would blot up any remaining water and you could do your initial wipe down with them. I also doubt dropping the drain hose would allow the water to drain from the inner tub, I would still lower the drain hose, there could be old foul water in the outer tub. Amazing Find ! Good for you!

the electric was turned off for the whole house. when my mom's aunt passed away recently, my mom's cousin (one of the ones who was clearing out the house, called the water & electric companies and had the utilities turned off. so, there is no electricity going into the house at the moment.

as for the wet/dry shop vac, believe it or not, but i was thinking about that. and i was looking at a wet/dry shop vac that was on ebay. but it was $50+ dollars to buy + the shipping. at right now, i don't have the extra money to do that. but i was thinking the same thing as you, "how easy it would be to just stick the shop vac hose in there and drain all that water out. even if i just bought a cigarette lighter converter for the plug.

but i was trying to think who we know that might have a generator we could borrow from too. cuz we are definitely going to need electricity when we go to clean up the house. i plan to take my vacuum cleaners to suck up alot of that dust, dirt, & spiderwebs. i think it would make it so much easier. i have 2 canister vacuum cleaners, with attachments, which would be ideal for cleaning, dusting, & vacuuming the spiderwebs. but we are definitely going to need electricity.

we heard from a friend/co-worker of my mom's that, if the electricity has been turned off, on a house, for more than 30 days (i think it was?) that in order to get the electricity turned back on, you had to have them come out and inspect & approve the electricity in the house.
i told my mom, that one of our relatives, that lives in this small town, has to know somebody that works at the electric company. so that we could have them turn the lights on for us.

hopefully we can get the lights turned back on with no problems, so that we can clean up the house and get that washer drained & running. we'll see what happens??

keep your fingers crossed for us. i'll keep you posted...

you know what, there is some old pots that are still there in the cupboards. GOOD IDEA!!! i didn't even think about that. UGGGHHH, i'm so dumb!! LOL....

and another good idea about the cheap disposable diapers, from the dollarstore, to blot up any remaining water & wipe out the bottom of the washtub! i guess that old saying is true; "two heads are better than one" but in this case, the more heads the better!!! so many great ideas, that i wouldn't have thought about doing. of course, i've never done anything like this before too. that's probably why i feel like a fish out of water. If you want to check to see if its stuck before running electricity through it, Once the water is gone try tilting the machine to locate a belt and move it with your hand that will move the belt from a flat spot which could stall the motor, Also another thing that has sprung to mind is over here we can get a siphon device thats used for draining fish tanks its a plastic tube with a pipe and small plastic bellows that siphon the water for you as its near to a bath tub maybe that will suffice till the power is back on?

Good luck as Al.vacbear says you deserve it !!

HD, Once you bail the water out, and check the inner tub by lowering the hose as suggested. Something mfr in 1965 is going to be much heavier that a modern machine. I just wanted to make sure you protect yourself from that foul water. You also want to get all the water out to make it somewhat lighter and easier to move it back thru the house, the way you think it came in.** Please do not plug this washer in until someone "looks it over"****. It has set a long time with water in it. Someone could of tried to repair it years ago. A mouse could of chewed on the wiring. Anything is possible from 1965 till the present. Just be cautious. thank you so much for all the helpful hints & tips. i don't doubt that this is going to be one heavy machine. it's pretty hard to move my maytag around. i can't do it with just a simple push or pull. i have to give my maytag a few pushes/knudges and pulls/tugs to get it into positions i want it in. and i'm not what you would call petite, at 5'6"!! LOL.....

so, when i do get over to the house to clean up & remove the washer, i do plan on taking our dolly that has the inflatable tires on it, to make it easier to move that bradford around & out of the house.
(now how we'll get it on the back of the truck, to bring it to tucson?) that'll be another story!!!
ha ha....

thank you sooo much for letting me know, not to plug this washer in, until someone looks it over!! i wouldn't have thought about a mouse chewing on the wires. and that would have been my first instinct to do, plug the washer in to see if;
A. it works
B. if i can get the washer to spin the old water out.

but now that know not to plug it in until someone looks it over, the next time we go over there, i will unplug it from the outlet. so that if & when the electricity get turned on again, it won't be plugged in.

and now i know, to just drain the water & remove it from the house are the first steps (besides giving it a good wipe down on the outside of the washer & inside of the tub. and of course that outta sight control panel!!

i do have a question though.....

do you or anybody on here know what the "RESET" button on the control panel is for?? what is it supposed to "RESET"???

thank you again, to you & everybody on here. i GREATLY appreciate all of your comments, suggestions, enthusiasm & motivation so much!!!

Wouldn't it be something if all that was wrong with the machine was that it tripped the reset after all these years ???

reset button....

norgeway:
so, what would happen when the "RESET" button was triggered/tripped?
would the motor just shut off. and to get the motor/washer going again, you had to push the "RESET" button and it would start the motor up again?? is that how the "RESET" button would or does work??

toploader55:
you know, now that you mention it, it wouldn't surprise me one bit, if this is exactly what could have happened. like i told you, the last aunt who lived there, she was "special needs" and IF (and i use "if" heavily) this aunt did use wash clothes in the washer, i could see this exact thing happening. the washer stopping cuz of the "RESET" button being triggered and her thinking it was broken.

but to tell you the truth, wouldn't the water be soapy or cloudy looking? or would the detergent have settled to the bottom of the washtub and turned black after so many years?? cuz the water in the washtub looks pretty clear & there is dead bugs floating in the water, and there is something black at the bottom of the washtub, which i assumed was dirt and dead leaves (although there's no tree in the washroom/house)???

if that is all that is wrong with this washer, that the "RESET" button was tripped/triggered, that would be nothing short of a miracle. but just very possible as well. God does work in mysterious ways. and i guess we'll find out soon enough!!!

keep your fingers crossed that this is the only thing that is wrong with this washer!!!
ha ha ha.....

we'll see???

ozzie908's profile picture
Could it possibly be anything to do with a out of balance switch?

@Hippiedoll you say it was plugged into the outlet so does this mean its been alive/hot all the while the power was on?

If so surely there is a good chance it won't have chewed wires etc ??? Well we can hope can't we ?

How long is it since the power was cut off to the house do you know ?

as far as i know, the washer has always been plugged in. in fact, i think it still might be plugged in? i'm not sure, as i was only looking at the washer & taking pictures of the washer, when i was there. i can look through the pictures i posted in this thread and see if anything looks plugged in. but as far as i know, i don't think anybody has unplugged the washer?

like you say, "we can hope, it won't have chewed wires, etc...". definitely!!!
;o)

as far as the power being turned off at the house, she passed away in july. and the electricity was turned off right after she passed away. so, it's been off since july of 2013. i can't believe it's already been that long??!! i guess since the electricity has been off for 6 months, there is a good possibility that the wires more thank likely, have been chewed up?
:o/

i guess all we can do is "hope" for the best & expect the worst!!! this way there won't be too much disappointment at what we find.

RE: Reset Buttons ~ Exactly as you say. Early Frigidaires had them, and they were fun to press back in after over-sudsing with too much Tide. Many people with Frigis switched to All or Dash. And when you press the button in, the cycle resumes where it left off. Like throwing a master switch, the lights come back on, the motor revs, the spin resumes, the pump shoots, and you're off. Woo-eee ! Great fun.

Fond Memories of Grants in downtown Buffalo where the Bradford looked so inviting. I remember one on display and demonstration like yours and how the wings at the top of the agitator made such cool splashes. So wished we could have one, but Geraldine was a die-hard Frigidairian. Never gonna happen.

When you see Ross, give him a big hello and an even bigger hug from me. The 806 S he gave me has become a huge hit around here. Friends and Family who have never seen a suds-return marvel at it, and wonder why they've disappeared, what with everything going green and eco-conscious, and so forth.

I wish you the best of luck getting your Bradford going and when you do, Sweet Christine, you'll have a rare prize in your laundry. See how quickly you turned into one of us, LOL.

Here's another easy solution I use if you can get power on in the house- I use a drill pump and two garden hoses to drain machines.

Only takes a few minutes and no lifting or splashing of deadly 40 year old diaper water lol!

thank you for confirming the "RESET" buttons function & purpose. sounds very interesting. i bet it would be a hoot to push the button and wash the machine come back to life.

in fact, now that i think about it, when i was there at the house taking the pictures & looking at the machine, i did push the light button in and i also remember pushing the reset button in too. and i remember both of them making a "click" when i pushed them in. but of course, there not being no electricity at the house, nothing happened. i tried to push the buttons a 2nd time (cuz i figured that is how you would turn the light on & off) but neither button would push in & click again?

so just maybe, the "RESET" button was triggered and the washer was never used after that. maybe???

as for ross, i've emailed with him a couple of times, but i haven't heard back from him lately? i hope he's alright. i will send him another email & see if i hear back from him. if i do, i will definitely give him your message!
:o)

thanks for the good luck wishes with the bradford. and yes, i see how quickly vintage washers is becoming very interesting. me personally, i've always like older things; cars (the durability & ability to have a mechanic fix/work on), houses (the look & character), music (the quality & instrument realness), and i guess washing machines would be for the same reason as cars.

me & my cousin both agree that the older washers, do just that, "wash" the clothes, with their agitators. she doesn't like newer washers because they don't have agitators in them. which i agree with.

even though i'm not too hip with vintage washers & i'm barely learning at a "baby steps" pace. it is quickly becoming a greater appreciation for vintage appliances, for me. MOVE OVER BOYS (& girls) AND MAKE ROOM FOR "LITTLE O' ME"!!!

I did not know Grant's had a line of major appliances. So interesting. Anderson, SC where I live had a Grant's on the south side of town that I did not know existed until it went out of business and a local resident turned the building into a hardware store. The door push plates said Grant as did the shopping carts. I miss house brand appliances. I have wavy hair and back in the 70's I used a Kmart hair dryer with a brush attachment to straighten my hair. Lolll

Hi there,

No, we never got the washing machine out. The house sat empty and then the scrappers broke in and pulled out the wires from the walls & light sockets. Then the druggies started getting in the house and doing who knows what, in there. So we boarded the house up.

Bradford update...

hippiedoll's profile picture
Well, After almost 10 years, we finally got the Bradford washing machine in Tucson. I've drained the washtub, wiped it out and wiped off the control panel & top of the washer.

I plugged it in, and it energizes up; 😃
i can push the light button in and the control/timer knob lights up. 😃
I can spin the solid tub by hand in one direction (counter-clockwise)
But all I can get the washer to do is hum...
😕

I tried turning the belt by hand but it's stuck 😖
Would WD40 help?

The little bottle of deodorizer was still liquid, but it was dark and sluggish moving in the bottle. I couldn't unscrew the cap, so I could smell it though.

I don't know...

If I've already asked this question before...
But what is the RESET button for, to the right of the control knob?
For off-balance loads, or motor overload RESET?

I think that reset button is for the overload on the motor along with being an off-balance switch as well.

Looks like that Kenmore gas dryer has the modulating burner.

Good to hear from you Christina. I don’t remember reading this post before so it was intriguing and when it ended in 2014 and was revived in 2021 i figured the machine was long gone. But here you are again and the washer is now at your house. How cool. The motor/pump/transmission setup looks a lot like GE especially with that rubber coupling connecting the top of the motor to what I assume would be the water pump. I agree that the belt is probably frozen in the pulley and the top where it connects to the pump doesn’t look good. It can surely be fixed but I think a major restoration will be in order. It’s a really cool washer and I hope it all works out for you. Looking forward to updates. If the machine buzzes from the motor when powered up the reset is not tripped but if you let it buzz too long it could trip at that point.

super cool that washer was recovered and cleaned up halfway decent : THE motor is an Emerson and probably ruined-rotor rusted into the stator and stator lams spread from the rust...Emerson motors of the era often had the specs stamped into the dust cap covering the lower bearing-if stampings still legible, there will be a date code to determine when the motor was made.Looks like a GE Filter flo motor and clutch could be mounted as a substitute-especially if pulley is about the same size.An era correct round GE motor would be most authentic :) If the transmission is found to be in good order, you are waaay ahead in getting this classic washing again :)

Hi Christina!

The reset button is motor protector overload reset FYI. The pump (and clutch shoes) may be stuck frozen which would prevent the motor from turning. You should try filling the pump with hot water by pouring hot water down the drain hose and then take a wrench to the top of the pump where the rubber/cloth coupling attaches and gently turn the wheel back and forth to get it going. Then try the motor again. If the pump turns easily then that isn't the problem. The problem then most likely is the motor start switch which needs to be sanded and cleaned.

There is alot happening on this side.

It's been pretty nonstop. But when things seem more back to normal, I will be able to get on here and tinker with the Bradford.

Thank you for your advices, tips, and pictures. I really appreciate you❣️

I'd like to wish you all a Happy & Blessed, Merry Christmas...

So are you planning to get both of those machines working together as a pair?

Will be neat to see, and cool if you have a dedicated space for them as a second pair or if you only use one area for them as your daily drivers...

Update:

hippiedoll's profile picture
I'm afraid the Coppertone Kenmore match-all gas dryer is beyond repair for me. I couldn't even get the lint filter to come out because it is rusted & deteriorating. So it would probably be better as a parts/donor machine.
I am not mechanically blessed.

As for the Bradford washing machine, I haven't had a chance to do anything to it. I go to my sister's during the week to help with my niece & nephew. On the weekends, I try to catch up with house chores & laundry, and rest up for the coming week. When I get a chance, I drive down to Mexico to take care of my dad's house, that I finally got possession of, from his "girlfriend" who tried taking advantage of me & my brother, by trying to keep possession of the house.

With everything that's been happening, I'm afraid I haven't had much time to do anything...
😕

Christina, I'm not sure how I missed this thread from the beginning, but ....

The kenmore dryer that was in this thead was the exact same dryer my neighbors had when they bought the house next door in 1988. They both passed away by 2012.
