Hey gang? Do you like General Motors Frigidaire appliances? YES!

Do YOU own a General Motors Frigidaire appliance? Or two? Or twelve? YES!

If so, we need you! I am working on a project to decipher GM Frigidaire SERIAL numbers for all types of appliances and of all ages - Washers, Dryers, Dishwashers, Ranges, Fridges, Ironers, Dehumidifiers, etc.  You name it, I want it.

Here's what I'm looking for. If you have access to a camera, take a shot of the model tag of your Frigidaire appliance, and post it here! Early washers have the serial number stamped in the model tag on the back of the machine.  Later, the serial number is not stamped on the model tag and is hidden under the washer top (early 60's), or hidden along the bottom of the front edge (1964), or thrown on a tag along the side of the appliance (mid to late 60's).   By the 1-18 era, the serial number is restored back to the model tag along the top of the control panel.

YOU DON'T have access to a camera? NO worry! Just take a moment to record the following:

  • Model number and type - washer, dryer, fridge, range, etc.
  • The approx. year of MFG (if known)
  • The SERIAL number of the appliance (most important part)
  • And, the color of the appliance

You may ask, what am I going to do with this information? I'm gathering as many GM serial numbers as possible to better understand the possible logic used by Frigidaire throughout the years. This isn't meant to become a registry of Frigidaire appliances, but instead to better understand what information is able to be extracted from the model/serial number. I will share my findings with everyone once the analysis is complete. In fact, we may even be able to solve the riddle together as a group!

If you don't feel comfortable posting here but you want to participate, please feel free to shoot me a PM through the AW email, or shoot me an email: bswestka at gmail.com.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's TAGS! Let's have fun with this!

Ben

Cool Idea Ben, I would love to see what you come up with. I have at least 18 GM Frigidaire appliances, but it will take me a few weeks to get the requested information as I am leaving the country for a few weeks, John.

I went through the archives of AW a few nights ago, and pulled about 35 serial numbers from various appliances, mostly washers and dryers. I didn't go through every post with the word Frigidaire, but instead grabbed from posts that hit on "serial" or "s/n" or "model tag".

I'm pretty lean right now on washers from the Rollermatic era to the early 1-18's.

UPDATE!

swestoyz's profile picture

Would you guys believe that I've already collected 107 unique model and serial numbers!  A huge thanks to everyone who has contributed so far!

If you are planning on contributing, let me know when you might be able to add to the list.  The primary focus is washers/dryers, but I'll take anything at the moment, with an emphasis on anything washer/dryer related from the 50's through 1972.  I'm very lean on washers from 1964-1972.

What I can share right now is that GM used a letter or letter combination to identify the appliance type within the serial number, placed at the third digit, from the very beginning up until around 1971.  Here is a small sampling of what each of those letters mean:

  • A - Fridge
  • AA - Freezer
  • C - Range (includes ovens, flairs, cook tops, drop-in's)
  • E - Washer (1947 Unimatic through the 1964 Multimatics, 1-18's)
  • VB - Dishwasher
  • SA - Dryer
  • VD - Washer (1964 Rollermatic through 1969)

There were more codes used during this time, and as well as a new set of codes used from 1971/1972 on.

And there is more to come.  Again, if you have a 1950's, 60's, or early 1970's washer and you're willing to contribute, I'd love your serial number!

Thanks again to everyone!

Ben

Ben (or Greg), did you ever see the serial number on the washer I got from you?
There's the plate with the model number at the back but I didn't see a serial number sticker on the lower part of the front panel like there is on my 1964 washer. According to the Tech-Talk manuals, they should still be there in 1965-66.

Also, I can't find the model number or serial number on my 1957 Imperial dryer. There's just a wiring diagram at the rear that says model DIC-57.

My 1965 (D&M) Super mobile dishwasher (which was sold new to friends of mine in Canada but made in the US) has the code "ED", my other top loading dishwasher, also from Canada but made in the US has the regular dishwasher code "VB" and so does my Canadian 1962 Deluxe but not my 1969 Custom Imperial dishwasher (which has a "C" code in the serial number like many Canadian appliances that are not cooking appliances).

BTW, I'd be curious to see the tags of other "slant top" dishmobiles in the club. According to my documents, only the "DW ITR" was imported here, I'm wondering if just this model had the CSA approval on the tag or if other models had it as well...

Phil -

I never did find a serial number for that washer. With the base coming from a WIAK (or was it a WCIAK?) and the top from a WCI-65, there is a good chance that it went missing at some point.

I know the 53 through 56 Filtrators had the model/serial tag along the frame behind the filtrator coil cover. I'll look around on the later examples I have to see if I can track it down. It has to be there somewhere.

I thought it to be strange that the D&M dishwasher had an EB serial code, rather than the traditional DW code of VB. I might have a photo of the 59/60 D&M Frigidaire dishwasher model tag from when I had that one from Robert years ago. Maybe GM wanted to distinguish between in house dishwashers and sourced dishwashers since they were being produced at the same time, just originating from different sources?

I have a theory about the Canadian serial codes, but I'll do a write up about them later tonight.

UPDATE - I took a look at the '58 Dryer manual, and it has the tag posted in same location as it was on the earlier models - right behind the filtrator cover. Take a look to see if you spot it there.

Ben

Ben, thanks for the information on the Filtrator dryer!  It is there, mounted upside down!  It has the same extra number after the model number as the washer (5430165 for the washer, 5430170 for the dryer). I don't know what this number is, the serial number is clearly a separate number.

DIC-57              Canadian 1957 Imperial Filtrator dryer                  Serial #50SA 3050

Frigidaire DIC-57 dryer tag

As for the washer I got from you, the cabinet is from a 1966 WCIAK, the model number is still written on the electrical tag at the back, in 1966, the serial number was still in the same location as in 1964-65 under the front panel but I really looked for this one and it's not there anymore!

More from Ogden! This is the tag for the 1958 Frigidaire dishwasher. Original colour as sold was white (it went through a harvest gold phase and then I repainted it turquoise). The last three numbers are 113 (sorry for the picture quality).

This is a US-built machine that was certified by CSA and sold here in Canada. Later models (like Phil's pink '62 model) were actually built here.

Gary, the serial number on your WCD-64 should be located below the front panel. On my WDR-64, it's on the silver-painted toeplate. It's just a sticker and it's not very visible...

Hi Ben ~

The garage laundry here is a veritable tundra. If you can wait for a thaw, I can help; but DO know that I have a 56 identical to yours -- is the serial number different for each machine? -- and a WO 65 - 2, and a Multimatic that you have baptized as a 62 and 1/2. If the thaw will come too late, I'm sorry I can't participate.

Hey guys - thanks for the recent additions!  Much appreciated.

Currently I think I'm up to about 170 or so serial numbers.  When I have free time, which doesn't seem to be very much these days, I'm combing through of Tech Talks and grabbing groups of serial numbers for random changes made to various appliances over the years.  Hopefully I'll have something to present soon.

Mike - if you want, feel free to post the serial numbers of your Frigidaires!  :)

Ben

I need some help...

Somebody please tell me where the plate is located on the WO-65.

I don't want to drag the machine because i'm afraid of damaging the ceramic floor. Luckily there's a big gap where i can put my arm with my mobile phone to take a picture but, i need to know where's the plate.

Joe,

I also searched it a lot on my 1957 Filtrator but Ben told me! (and I should have looked at my manuals like he did because I already had the info in them!).

So I did look at my manuals for yours and it's at the same place as in my 1957.

Thomas, I didn't see an illustration of a pre-1955 model but the serial number should be on the back panel, probably at the left of the opening where you can see the motor/mechanism.

Ben, if you have the chance, I'd like to see which was the oldest 1-18 washer tag (or any post-1970 Frigidaire appliance tag) you had that had a CSA approval. Members who have sent their serial numbers directly to Ben but no picture can look at their tag. The picture that Mike sent in the post above doesn't show one but newer ones do.

As an example, here's one from a post above that has the CSA approval as an example. My 1977 1-18 has it too and so do my two 1978 microwave ovens. I'm wondering if Cory's RCM-9 microwave oven has the CSA approval and refrigerators from other members too. Dryers and Ranges, unless they were originally sold in Canada won't have it. Frigidaire didn't import appliances here for a few years during the 1970s.

UPDATE -

swestoyz's profile picture

A HUGE thanks to everyone who has participated so far.  I really appreciate it!

I think I lost a few serial numbers that I had gathered from going through Tech Talks, but most importantly I haven't lost anything that was shared here, or found in the archives of AW.  I'm sitting on about 170 or so serial numbers right now, most of which came from YOU, which is pretty amazing.

In terms of washers, here is what has been collected as of 3/14/2014:

  • 1947 - 1950 WJ/WK/WL - 2
  • 1951 - 1954 WO - 8
  • 1955 WV - 0
  • 1956 - 2
  • 1957 - 5
  • 1958 - 0
  • 1959 - 0
  • 1960 - 2
  • 1961 - 0
  • 1962 - 0
  • 1963 - 2
  • 1964 - 2
  • 1965 J line - 0
  • 1966 K line - 0
  • 1967 L Line - 3
  • 1968 - 1970 N line - 4
  • 1971 S line - 0
  • 1972 T line to 1979 models - A LOT

I was telling Phil in a PM that I'd like to find a few 1964-1966 Impact Clutch Rollermatic serial numbers, as well as ANY 1971 S line 1-18 washer serial numbers. If you've got one of those machines, a serial number would be GREATLY appreciated.  Check earlier posts in this thread to better understand the location of the serial number on 1964-1966 washers.

I'll keep bumping this thread every so often, as this project will be an ongoing project, not something that ends anytime soon.

Thanks again everyone!

Ben

Glad to help Ben

That particular machine was headed to the crusher.

I rescued it from the local Re-Store. They had it on a pallet
ready to go out the door and I convinced them to sell it to for $20.
It was missing it's spin clutch. A guy I knew at a local parts
dealership GAVE me one he saved from a machine. I owe him.

It does function well but the spin bearing is getting noisy.

Bill (or anyone)....

Where is the model/serial tag located on the Skinny Mini?   I was looking at the one in my garage but was not able to find it.

Granted it's not 100% accessible, I was having to look over and around other machines to access it.

Thanks!

Tim, if this model has the 1960's style curved doors and hidden door gaskets, the tag is probably behind the toe plate on the left side. If it is a model with flat doors and gaskets visible from the side, it could be somewhere inside the refrigerator section.

Strangely, it's a smaller model than my 22 cu-ft model from the same year (in the reply #75 up in this thread) but it holds more refrigerant than mine.

Sept 4th 1968?     This 1968 "N" model was probably produced from mid-1967 to mid-1970. It's probably one of the most common models among solid tub Rollermatic washers.

I just pulled this beauty out of mothballs to use as my daily driver. So far, I'm thrilled with its performance. I bought it about 5 years ago and I think I tested it to see if it worked but now that my "trusty" LG has temporarily( I hope) shit the bed, I decided I needed another capacious machine to do the week's wash. One unexpected surprise: AFAIK these 1-18's had a top spin speed of 650 rpm but as I was taking this machine through its paces I swear I heard a solenoid "CLUNK" during the first spin and then noticed the tub wind up to what I consider solid-tub rollermatic speeds. Did some of these machines have an enhanced spin???

Ken,

They didn't have a solenoid like the previous Rollermatic Rapidry 1000 models but the spin cycle always starts on slow to empty the tub and then the timer advances and the motor switches to faster speed. The Rollermatics with the Rapidry 1000 feature did it in 3 steps. First slow spin, second, the solenoid switched the spin rollers for faster speed and then the motor went to high speed.

See Ben's 1-18 in this video when it switches to high speed.

I did a few short videos of my 1-18 myself but none show it switching from low to high speed spin.

http://youtube.com/user/rivgs67/videos

BTW,  Ben, what do you think about that. These two serial numbers that I posted previously in this thread are from identical 1971-72 RDE-38S ranges. The first picture shows the serial number of the range I got two days ago and the other one shows the serial number of the one I already had.

Trying to find RE-38 serial number

Pretty sure I have an RE-38s (circa 1978), but having an impossible time finding model and serial number plate. Not in any of the obvious places (inside oven door, inside warming draw). Any help much appreciated.

Thanks!

Model WCDS  serial 35FE 949

This one seems to have the old style serial number since it should have been made in 1970-71 and the number begins with a "3". Could "FE" be the code for the early 1-18 washers?
