I have a Maytag Reverse Rack model WC504. It is quite a fabulous machine but lately it hasn't been working right. The pump hasn't been able to maintain full wash pressure, and it makes a surging sound instead of the normal rhythmic swooshing sound. Adding water to the sump does seem to help, but it doesn't make it go all the entirely away, there is still some surging and I can just tell the the jets aren't at full pressure. Also, I have to add so much water that if I put anymore in I feel like it is going to flood. I have to put water in until it is touching the heat guards on the wash arm.

Here is how much it fill on its own.

And here it is with the added water. The water is touching the bottom of the heat guards on the wash arm, and there was still some surging in the pump.

The experts should be here soon... But I think one of the members here said he had to clean the screen (filter) under the power module.

So if the machine drains, take off the lower wash arm a see what you got.

There is a circular micro mesh filter beneath the pump cover. They can easily clog because it is such a fine mesh filter. I'm sure that is the problem. There is also a filter flush arm the sprays water against this micro mesh filter. It has vertical slits that can get clogged as well. Once you take the white pump cover off, you will see what I mean. I beleive the pump cover screws are torx screws.

I was gonna say in addition, to check the filter in the water valve as well, there may not be enough water passing thru for a full fill.....

a good cleanout, and you should be back to normal....they are really nice machines....

metered fill

I believe Maytag referred to their reverse rack machines as having metered fill--which meant it wasn't simply timbe-based, but also involved a switch which would let the timer know there was sufficient water added.

I know that micro mesh filter can be kinda finicky if it gets clogged, I usually try to keep it cleaned out. It didn't really look all that dirty but I'll give it a soak and see what happens. The filter backwash was clean as well. I haven't had a chance to check the fill valve but I will.

If you look at the pic in reply #7 you will see under the back flush arm that the bearing/seal ring is split. I am willing to bet that when the wash pump is going that water is surging out that seal and not pressuring the arms and tower like it should be. Just a thought .also look at the lower arm sides, they tend to split.
