Those are not turnaround shelves, it is true. And they are plain-looking.

BUT - they are pull-out shelves. You can pull them out towards you to access items on the back of the shelf. That's not quite as handy-dandy as turnaround shelves, but it's not just plain shelves, either.

Pull outs are better than stationary, but they still can't compare to the luxury of articulated, which make visions of Carol Merrill dance through my head.

Well....

danemodsandy's profile picture
Carol Merrill wasn't the one who had to bear the manufacturing costs of turnaround shelves, and GE really needed to stay competitive in the heated-up appliance market of the 1960s. Those turnarounds cost some serious money, and they weren't universally beloved, anyway - anyone who got to clean up a major spill on them got pretty resentful by the time they got all the gook out of the crevices, both topside and bottomside.

Don't get me wrong - I was around those shelves for years, and nothing will ever beat them for sheer convenience. But I can see why GE felt they were no longer necessary after a certain point.

Well, THAT party's over

Such a spoiler.

It just switched from Carol Merrill to Norma Rae.  :-D

My Favorite Amana!

danemodsandy's profile picture
Carol's caressing it in the top right photo - the 22-cubic-foot side-by-side they made for so many years.

They were frequently seen on TV - Suzanne Pleshette had one in Harvest on The Bob Newhart Show, and the guys on Emergency! had the Coppertone version in Station 51's kitchen.

One turned up here locally last year, and if it had been White instead of the dread Almond, I probably would have done it, running costs be damned.

Would those have been the Amanas that were touted as using no more energy than a light bulb (wattage of which was never stated)?

Maybe a searchlight bulb! I was interested in buying one of those fridges for sale here locally, but not only was it Almond, John combo52 advised me that operating costs would probably be on the order of $40 a month at today's electric rates.

Cooled my ardor right quick, that did.

This is the closest I've found (the other being in Pittsburgh) in yellow. I've been looking for a 61-64 Frigidaire frost-proof for a bit now in sunny yellow (no luck yet). I absolutely hate our 1 year old GE; it's quite possibly the worst fridge we've ever owned. It's given me more time to find a vintage fridge though, so I guess there's that.

Other than due to the color, I wonder why this fridge hasn't moved.

Shoot, too far!

I'd grab this in a heartbeat if it were nearer to Michigan. I like yellow, too. Any of the pastels make my heart go pitter patter.
