I would have thought Dos Equis!

Oh, well - whatever you choose, there will dirty glasses for the KD-10 to deal with later.

Wonderful news!

I followed the time line of your saga and I know there were moments of great discouragement. It makes this particularly sweet. And what a cool machine!

Those old KA's can really get under your skin. I don't know what I'll do when (if?) the family KDS 55 Superba fails. I truly appreciate it and watch it at work every time we run it. Your story makes me want to go earlier in the models rather than later.

I'm sure it gives you a warm feeling to run it!

Sorta like this-

Joe-
Your KD-10 looks phenomenal! You would never know that it is as old as it is.

I'm sure that you're elated that it's back up and running. Congratulations on your success. Hopefully you'll get many, many years of use out of her.

If it's possible, I'm sure others as well as myself would love to see what your baby looks like when you have it loaded up and ready to run. Those racks are an interesting set-up. A pic or two would be great!

Lastly- How long does it take for that DW to complete a cycle?

Have a Great Day!
Rick

Kitchenaid KD 10 Dishwasher

These are truly amazingly overbuilt machines, to anyone that likes the later KAs if you ever tore a KD-10 apart you would realize just what an amazing well built machine these 10s were.

I parted out 3 KD 10s last year [ one was where Joe's motor came from ] and after taking these machines apart I came away feeling that KA should have just quit making DWs after the KD-10, the machine is just that much superior to any KA that that followed.

I think that this is also the way many Maytag fans feel about the Maytag's grey ghost wringer washers, again nothing they built after the GG was anywhere as well built.

Absolutely Stunning! It's difficult for me to describe the feeling I get when I see something like this--something so lovingly designed and crafted-- built the way things SHOULD be built.

And honors to you for equally lovingly bringing it back to life.

This is excellent news! Definitely wishing you many more happy years of overbuilt KD-10 dishwashing :-)

Can we see a shot before you wash the dishes so we know you aren't committing dishwashing-blasphemy?

Post# 738585 , Reply# 22   3/1/2014 at 18:58 (3,679 days old) by washdaddy (Baltimore)

Joe,
I noticed that your KD-10 also has a fan blower for the dry portion of the cycle.

It's sad that it isn't a common feature on all DW's. If would make things dry so much easier and eliminate condensation left over after that part of the cycle finishes especially on plastics.

And WOW! 35 minutes for a complete cycle. Compared to today's DW you could almost do three loads of dishes in yours compared to the time that todays DW's would do one.

Said it before, I'll say it again- GREAT MACHINE!

Rick

In just 35 minutes, all my dishes are clean and with no pre-rinsing. They are dry to the touch warm and with no water spots. PERFECT!!!

I would be willing to put this 1949 Kitchen KD-10 Dishwasher up against any new modern dishwasher for the test!

I think the KD-10 would win!!!

Nice load :-)

I wonder what the water/energy consumption of one of these machines, compared to a modern one is?

Do you have a particularly hot inlet temperature, or just the standard 120°?

It HAS to be more economical

Hell...it runs 1/4 the time of a new one, and I bet it uses about 12 gallons or so of water, water is a lot cheaper than electricity!!

Congratulations Joe, it's a wonderful machine. We love our 12, the water movement and pressure is amazing in there and they are very durable machines.

Post# 738909 , Reply# 36   3/3/2014 at 00:55 (3,678 days old) by washer111 ()

Running times may vary, but considering the differing motor sizes between then and now, it is (probably) a moot point. Not sure of the wattages between machines, so I can't say for sure. The bigger differences would come from insulation and actual water usage today.

Still though, if it works, who cares?

Water

dosxxpapa's profile picture
It uses about 61/2 gallons of water for the entire cycle. 1 wash, two rinses. Not sure about the watts or electricity.

But works very well.

Alright. So now I think Im going to keep my eyes open for a KD for my 1956 MCM home renovation. From what Ive gathered here I think it would do a better job than my 56 GE? What was the last year for the KD? And how many models/revisions where there in the line?

Beautiful machine. Shoudn't the bowls on the right be facing inside the machine?

Shoudn't the bowls on the right be facing inside the ma

appnut's profile picture
Possibly. I was thinking about this last night and some today. The larger of the bowls could possibly fit on the outside rail of the rack, but they still may be too heft or thick to fit properly. So the direction which they are loaded might be best. If those larger bowls did fit well on the outside rails, then they could face toward the center and the smaller bowls could then fit on the next rail in toward the center. But even if the smaller bowls could fit on the inside rails, given the heft of the dinner plates, those smaller bowls may not sit properly either. Joe may have already experimented with all this. These are quite hefty dishes, far larger than the typical dishes which were most common in homes during this time, even though these dishes are vintage. The 10 & 11 series, and quite possibly the 12 series, had a kind of funky arrangement which loaded the smaller plates for facing toward the center. I know that by the Custom 14, the side facing dishware had the same raised loops to hold the dishware as what you see in the empty rack photos above that were used to support the dinner plates going down the center. I've never gotten to play with a 10-12 series, only a KDC14. And the revised raised loops for the side-facing dishware on the KDC14 allowed for a lot more loading flexibility and capacity.

Thanks for the answer. I never had the joy of playing with an old KitchenAid dishwasher either.

As I look again at the pictures, I wonder if the bowls are scraping the tub when you push the lower rack back in.

No scraping

dosxxpapa's profile picture
There is no scraping against the tub when dishes are property arranged. It looks small but it really holds allot of dishes. I enjoy it every time I get to use it. There is really something fantasizing about watching vintage appliances work.

It was also I allot of working on it and seeing how it was built. I am glad John had a motor and it was fun to install it and also put in the new seals. Pretty straight forward.

I an reading the KD-10 sales brochure and operating instruction manual. It is very interesting how they described everything about the dishwasher.

Take Care

Joe

One Thing....

danemodsandy's profile picture
....That's interesting to reflect on.

We think of the KD-10 today as a very simple machine. After all, it does not have a detergent dispenser, a rinse aid injector, a rapid advance timer and certainly no electronic touchpad controls.

But in 1949, it was high tech, a magic machine that only the few could aspire to, and which even fewer understood about what was "under the hood."

I get the feeling you see your KD-10 as a magic machine still, instead of something "old and quaint." That's how I like to think of my own vintage appliances - as the very best you could buy.

You are exactly right Sandy!! That is how I feel about it!! I love it and I am so glad that I have this site and it members to make this dream come true!!!! It is top of the line back in 1949.

I think this dishwasher cost about $650.00 back in 1949. Only a few would have this dishwasher back then.. Most of the people I talk with that lived during this period, did not even know that a dishwasher existed.

I am living the dream in the 1940's!!!

That brings up a little confession: My house is over-equipped for the kind of house it is.

I live in a little 1950 tract house, a starter home for the many Waterloo residents who worked for factories like John Deere and Rath. It was probably about $7995 new - and "new" was about the only thing it would have had going for it. I'm tawkin' basic here.

Now? It has as many TOL goodies as I can find - Maytag 806s, a KDS-55 dishwasher, a GE range with P*7 and Sensi-Temp, an Electrolux 1205 vacuum and a Singer Athena sewing machine.

If the first owners of the house could see it now, they'd probably wonder what so many "rich people's toys" were doing in it, LOL!

Yes I know. If we really had all of these items back in the day, we would be considered rich. The average person back in the day did have all these items.

But it is fun to have them anyways!!!
