LOL at the comparison to that HE Whirlpool impeller washer (although, in all fairness, they should have waited for the slower turnover to begin instead of fading the video out once it actually started).

Anyone notice the brief glimpse of the SQ combination washer/dryer in the first video?

As you mention...

... YES! Has this even ever been launched or seen or does anyone here have used it?

But its too bad that they are not pushing the Front Load SQs more with a similar promotion. They even admit that the TLers are designed for only around 10,000 loads, while they claim that the FLers are good for around 25,000 loads, 10,000 loads is no better than a Miele and probably not much better than most Whirlpool washers being built today.

Speed Queen Combo, Yes Thanks To Jon C. [ jetcone ] we have a SQ Combo in the museum collection. While I was glad to see they saved one, I was also disappointed to find out that we did not have the only one left, LOL.

SQ was the LAST US manufacturer to introduce the combo around 1961 and by this time some manufacturers were already thinking of discontinuing them, partly because of the Eisenhower recession that the US was still recovering from.

The SQ combo was the same basic design as the Hotpoint combo that was only on the market for barely two years starting in 1957. SQ reduced the size of HPs combo design from 30" wide to only 25,1/2 " wide making the SQ the smallest Combo made in the US, and they called it the Compact Combo, I would love to someday learn the story of how HPs design made it over into SQs hands. Like the HP the SQC was only made as a water condensing electric no-vent machine.

Turnover...

...with an impeller? I never saw it in the GE Hydrowave in the basement. The only thing that washer is good for is spinning out clothes after I've washed them properly in my Maytag.

I got a kick

out of the comparison to the "eco friendly" washer. Well, I use the term washer lightly in this instance.

If they really put each machine through a teat cycle with water and do a visual inspection, it's strange that some people still report having oily film on the tubs.

Love Speed Queen Top Loaders

Long Live Speed Queen!!!

Love my Speed Queen Top Loader! I have the AWN542 Washer and the ADE4BR Dryer. You can keep all the HE machines you want, but I will never buy them.

I built a good energy efficient 1600 sq/ft new house in 2010, with new energy saving appliances, LED lighting, water heater, Hvac, insulation, etc... How disappointed I was, with the washer, dryer and dishwasher. These appliances are what lead me to investigate why our new high efficient appliances, in my opinion, are crappy.

I can now wash a load of clothes, on Heavy with two rinses, in 37 minutes. I also raised the water lever to where it should be, thanks to the video on youtube. I can also wash a load of pots and pans, in my 1993 KitchenAid dishwasher, in 1 hour.

I did not build my high energy efficient house to save the planet or because the Government told me to do it. I did it to save money on my utility bill. My utility bill, (water, garbage, & taxes included), stays between $80.00 and $130 a month, even with using the older KitchenAid dishwasher, Speed Queen washer, & keeping it 72*F inside year round.

In my opinion, we need to roll back our energy appliance regulations to the early 1990's and focus more on building smaller houses with better insulation, water heaters, Hvac units, windows & doors. Your Hvac unit and water heater make up the biggest portion of your electric bill.

These 3000 plus sq/ft houses with their whirlpool tubs, over the top kitchen appliances, and showers with multi heads are putting a higher demand on our electricity, water supplies, and wood, than the normal size houses with average kitchen and laundry appliances like we had 30 years ago.

I know that some of you will not like what I have said, but the truth sometimes hurts. You have every right to build any size house you want but stop and think about the impact your house size will have on utilities and building materials before you build it. I know an older couple, who's children have moved out years ago, that just built a new 4000 sq/ft house. That size house for two people is crazy and a waste.

I wish we had laws that put high energy appliance regulations on houses over 2500 sq/ft. Make those houses use these new crappy energy star appliances and let everyone else use the early 1990's energy appliance regulations. People would start to think, about the size house, before they build or buy.

I know, it will never happen. We will have to go on suffering with them.

Love my small, super insulated, 8 foot ceiling, 1600 sq/ft efficient house. LOL!!

You Allen are a man after my own heart!

Kudos to you!

I have the same pair of Speed Queens as you do and I agree they are among the best machines made today, if not the best.

Kudos to you for thinking rather than "trending" and latching on to the latest "eco-fad".

I too utterly reject current thinking that holds we're in an irreversible phase of climate change, that Mother Earth is getting hotter, that water is disappearing faster than my hairline, that using mere cupfuls of water somehow will clean your laundry.

The basic problem is, and you alluded to it, is people don't think anymore. They grab the latest issue of CR or Mother Earth news or something and right away.........what they read becomes the gospel. They tune into Faux news, CNN, PMSNBC and the like and are bombarded with scare tactics and told what they need to do lest the planet just up and die right before our eyes.

When GMA starts off with........"we'll tell you what you need to know....." I switch off the tube.

Sounds like you did your homework on your laundry needs. I too spent time researching rather than telling the world my life on Facebook or memorizing who is getting kicked off Big Brother or who is swapping wives, kids, houses, cars, dogs, etc.

When the data was in, Speed Queen won handily over the overpriced, technoladen garbage commonly found in your local BIG BOX. That the dryer has not seen a major redesign in 25 years bothers me not one bit. That the washer operates on the same concept as Mammaw's Norge, Maytag, or Whirlpool does not bother me either. That it comes only in white. That is has a commonly available v-belt to drive the transmission.

Nevertheless in bypassing modern technology, you and I along with other brave souls are missing out on some "new" concepts in laundry:

Such as:
1. Wash and rinse cycles taking over an hour
2. Error codes
3. Having to "reboot" said machine to clear error codes
4. Having to spend additional money (and consume even MORE resources) buying "washing machine cleaner" and running the darn thing on a dedicated "cleaning" cycle.
5. 1 year warranties on the entire appliance.
6. Installing surge suppressors to protect the delicate control boards from power surges.
7. Mold.
8. Having to buy HE detergent.

I hope you get many satisfying years of use from your Speed Queen appliances.

Thanks washman

I have enjoyed reading a lot of your post. You and I think alike, when it comes to all this "eco fad" stuff. Most of us, as children, were taught not to be wasteful, but there's a difference between wastefulness and plain common sense.

Wasteful example: You don't leave the front door wide open while the ac is running.

Common Sense example: It does take lots of warm water and a powerful motor for agitation to get the dirt and body oils out of your clothes.

Whenever I hear this eco stuff, I think of that childhood story "Chicken Little" and the sky is falling. LOL!

I just got a 1980's GE Potscrubber 1200, from the local Restore. I plan on fixing it and keep it as a backup. My 1993 KitchenAid dishwasher, I bought 2 years ago, puts the new dishwashers to shame. I also plan to buy another Speed Queen washer and dryer as a replacement in the future.

I hope someday these people will wake up from this foolishness. These radical eco people are on the same level as snake handling church people. I've met some of these eco people and they remind me of the cult that followed Jim Jones to South America and drank the poisoned Kool-Aid. When they start lecturing me, I tell them to quit shoving their religious beliefs on me. You should see their faces, when I say that. I tell them that they are worshiping mother earth like pagans, which is a religion by definition, and the Government is peddling their religious beliefs on the rest of society so they can make money off of it.

I'll get off my soapbox now, before I really tell you what I believe about this eco stuff. LOL!!!!
