As long ss I've been hanging around AW, I have never seen something that theoretically exists - a set of 1966 or early 1967 "New Generation" Maytags in Turquoise or Yellow. As everyone knows, Turquoise got dumped for Spanish Avocado, and later, Yellow got dumped for California Gold (Harvest) .
Does anyone have a set of these, preferably 806s in Turquoise? I'd be very interested in seeing a photo. I'm not in the market for a set (Hell, it's difficult enough to collect a complete set of vintage majors in White), but it sure would be nice to know these are really out there. Thanks! Sandy |

Those are GORGEOUS!
In a way, I kind of hope none of those ever show up near me - because I'd be in a hunt for other Turquoise majors to go with them, LOL! But I have to admit, a set with a DE 806 dryer would tempt me mightily. Thank you so much for posting these. And Don, thanks for making them look so good again. I hope it wasn't too major a project! |

Actually, Sandy, Don bought these on ebay and the were NEW IN THE BOX! I think the boxes are folded up out in the garage. The story goes something like this: a couple was getting married in 1967. These were a wedding gift. I don't recall if the wedding was called off or if circumstances just didn't permit their immediate installation. They were put into storage and FORGOTTEN for over 40 years! If you look closely, the washer is a suds-saver, too!
Last summer I put a new capacitor on the dryer electronic control in order to get the auto-dry "just right." |

I think I just did the world's slowest double-take!
What's up with that generous array of buttons on an A806 of that vintage? I count the correct five buttons for wash and rinse temps at far left. I also count the correct three for load size at far right. But the other grouping of buttons - for wash action and Wash 'n Wear/Permanent Press - has a fourth button not usually found on an early A806. And since this sucker's Turquoise, it has to be an early machine. Is this a Suds-Saver model? P.S.: Bob, don't get any Turquoise karma started, LOL! It has taken me years to get the majors I want in White, and I'm still on the hunt for the last dream machine - the Amana fridge. I don't think I'm going to live long enough to duplicate my collection in Turquoise! ;-) |

....To get a color sample matched to the control panels of those machines, so that there was a reference for the blue insert color.
These fade and change color, to the point that a lot of them don't match other machines any more. Obviously, one can paint the control panels of both machines of a pair in any shade of blue one thinks is close, but a reference sample would be a terrific resource for the purists among us. This suggestion is offered, of course, just in case Don doesn't already have enough to do. :-) |

the middle five are the 3 wash & two rinse temperature buttons. The left bank is the two wash and spin speed buttons as well as suds save designations. Far right are load size. Early 06 units, although designated "Big Tub", they only had 3 water levels. Small, Medium, Large.

I'll see what I can do….
Seeing as I own one of these as well….
The left 5 are the wash/rinse combos
The middle five buttons are: Regular Action (fast/fast); Gentle Action (slow/slow);Wash-n-Wear (fast/slow); Save Suds; Drain Suds.
The right 3 are the load size. On the first generation of the "New Generation" machines there were only three water levels on the Large capacity (19 gaL.) machines: Large = 19 gal.; Normal = 16 gal.; Small = 12.5 gal.
For whatever reason, in 1969 when they added the "permanent press" cycle with cool-down to the 806, the switched the speed & suds controls to the LEFT set of buttons (6 total: 1. regular wash; 2. Gentle Wash; 3. regular spin; 4. Gentle spin; 5. save suds; 6. drain suds) and the water temperature to the MIDDLE set. |

This has been discussed here before…..
Maytag introduced a TRUE Wash-n-wear cycle WITH a cool down on their 160 (and subsequent A900, A902 & A906) machines in 1959. This is only 1 year after WP/KM introduced this feature on their machines. However….Maytag did no deem fit to introduce it further down the line until 1969 when they chose to introduce it truly ACROSS the entire line in one fell swoop. |

Sandy, my knowledge of matters Maytag is somewhat encyclopaedic because I own REAMS of service literature and have read nearly all of it. Since it is of considerable interest to me, the details stick.
Now, if you were to ask me about the details of 1960s Chryslers…all I could tell you was that there was a car called the Dart. Some people liked it, most hated it…. LOL |

i hear ya!!!
i know exactly where you're coming from when you say: "So many minor differences between each model that it's a little hard to keep up with all of them". that's exactly where i'm at right now too, trying to figure out the different models & what different features they had. there are a few members here that are very impressive with how much they know about the maytag washers. it is definitely hard to keep up with the different model numbers & years of production. but it is interesting to learn & read on this group. thank you all for your great insights & conversations.... :o) |

Until the frabjous day that someone posts a shot of their New Generation machines in Yellow, here's a catalog shot from the 1966 brochure that introduced these beauties.
The four color selections available at introduction time were: White, Yellow, Turquoise and Shaded Coppertone. Color availability (at least at that time) extended only as far down the line as the 406 washer and 306 dryer; models below those were available only in White. A pair like this would be a real find - Yellow had its fans (me among them), but it wasn't to everyone's liking, so it's a little HTF now: |

Sandy, I have one of the new generation machines in honest to goodness 'sunny' yellow, only trouble is it could stand a repaint due to bleach and fading like the earlier machines. At least the porcelain top is in good shape. It's a middle of the line machine but does NOT have a chrome panel, which I understand was typical of the first year of production. Wish I could recite the model number but it's out in the shed at the moment. I grabbed it a couple years ago once I realized what I was looking at! -Cory
