Quick question:
My favorite detergent, Cheer seems to have disappeared from the shelves.
Is there something I don't know?

Why did the detergent... Dis-a-CHEER?

I think it was on the shelves at Walmart today, but I haven't looked for it or bought it in years, since the bottles have gotten smaller as prices continue to climb.

I haven't seen Cheer for Darks in Philly for about 6 months. I have recently seen the "stay colorful" version.

Something seems strange with Cheer here in Charlotte too...

kenmoreguy64's profile picture
Just about 4 to 6 weeks ago I noticed that one of the major grocery stores had changed the price of the 100oz bottle to $7.99, which is a great deal and a drop of several dollars. There was a shelf tag that read "new low price". It didn't say clearance or mention anything about while supplies last or that it was temporary.

Last week I noticed that the 100oz. bottles are gone, slots taken by something else and we just have 40oz and 50oz bottles. There has been some discussion that Cheer is somewhat of a lost brand at P&G...Era, Gain, Dreft and Tide all have their slot or niches, but Cheer was just sort of hovering out there.

I haven't seen the Cheer Dark, which used to be found around here only at Target, in at least 6 months either. Hopefully it will reappear!

Could it be a weather related shortage due either to production problems or shipping issues? My supermarket had notices about produce availability and it isn't beyond the realm of possibility that production facilities had cold or snow slowdowns or raw material shortages.

Local Stock

mrb627's profile picture
My local grocery store has Cheer in stock, but it only has a two width display compared to the gobs and gobs of Tide. You could almost miss it. Funny that Purex has more of a showing in the detergent aisle compared to Cheer. Perhaps it is on its way out...

The tide of Tide

paulg's profile picture
I also did notice the overwhelming variety of Tide in the stores where I once bought Cheer. Quite honestly the over-Tide influence on the shelves seemed a bit... odd to me. Am I having a TIDE dream??
Tide makes us both itch so neither of us can use it.
I'm experimenting with All Pods and Purex - so far so OK.
I will however visit Target. I don't normally shop there so I'll give it a spin.

Clearance Cheer at Target

My local Target Greatland had 120 load boxes of powdered Cheer on clearance last month and now only has a bottle or two of liquid in stock.

P&G Has Really Mishandled The Cheer Brand

launderess's profile picture
Perhaps they should just let it die and then launch "Tide for Colours" as they do with Ariel.

Once upon a time you knew what Cheer with "Triple Colour Guard" was for; to launder items with the same great cleaning as Tide but to keep colours from fading. Now Cheer is "Bright Clean", for darks, and so forth with most liquid versions loaded with OBAS.

What's the deal with Cheer anyway? The liquids have OBAs and the powder has oxy bleach. I know, some of it is to cancel out chlorinated water but still...

Noticed at Kroger's today that the unscented Cheer bottles were gone -- they were there last week -- but the stuff in the black bottles was still on the shelf. They haven't carried Cheer powder for quite some time.

I gotta admit, I have often wondered why Cheer has oxy bleach and OBAs in it.

Over here in the UK, under the Ariel and Persil brands, the colour versions, have never had oxy bleach, and nearly never have OBAs (I can only think of the new Ariel colour pods that do)

Originally Powdered Cheer With "Triple Colour Guard"

launderess's profile picture
Protected against the fading of colours by including a small amount of oxygen bleach (sodium perborate)meant to counter chlorine found in tap water. The small amount meant bleaching action was nil to none. Also since sodium perborate really becomes effecting at bleaching in water temps >120F, laundry done in cold, lukewarm, and warm water would rarely if ever be affected.

Remember as well just because the word "Oxi" appears on a detergent label today it does not translate into oxygen bleach. It can mean a brightening and whitening action based upon increased surfactants, enzymes, and anti-redeposit agents designed to give the *appearance* of bleaching action.

As for OBAS, cannot understand why they are in detergents for colours either. One assumes makers of such things separate pastel/colourfast laundry and darks/blacks. The former aren't really affected by bluing agents, but latter can and will often become faded from constant exposure.

OBAs

According to "Stiftung Warentest" the German consumer magazine and Henkel as well the impact of OBAs is worst on pastels. Few people are aware of that.

I don't normally shop for detergent there. Let me check into this.
This is so odd.
Just this week two bottles (yes TWO) showed up at da Jewels. They weren't there the other day. Still not a great showing.
Thanks to all for the detective work!

Now that you mention it, I was at a Jewel Osco, too. In a strip mall-type setting on Canal. Maybe that's where I saw it. Sorry, the past few days have been a sleep-deprived blur.

Target!

zipdang's profile picture
Try Target. Was in a larger suburban store today and they had powder in large 120 load boxes, and regular liquid in two sizes and in both regular and HE versions. Didn't notice any free and clear, though, which struck me odd. I used the free and clear liquid many years ago and remember liking it at the time.

I live close to a CityTarget and even with their abridged selection I think they stock liquid Cheer. Now I'm curious and will have to find out. Lol

Similar findings at Target in Charlotte

kenmoreguy64's profile picture
There are two Target stores very close to me, so I checked them both yesterday. Both have Cheer 120 load powder, and Cheer 100oz liquid in HE and non-HE. The bottles are only $7.99 regular price, that is not a sale price. What a deal.

So, to Paulg, I guess I'd continue to check around, if nothing else maybe Target will order it for you since other regions have it.

Gordon

I went to Walgreens: No Cheer
And I went to Mariano's in Western Springs (formerly Dominicks): No Cheer
Still have to try Target. I'll get to them soon.
So off we go to Target. Regardless though, something has indeed changed in this market in regards to Cheer. Don't know what's up, but something is goofy.
Thanks again for your help. I'll advise if Target comes up to the plate.

I have a bunch of those.. but not SNEER. How funny.

I do have "TIED". If I remember correctly, "Your clothes will be fit to be TIED" or something like that.

Thanks for the laugh... and for a great idea. I'm going to frame any detergent "Wacky Packs' and put them in the laundry room.

In Rite-Aid. They typically have it on sale every month, and, stock it regularly here.

@GEFilterPro. I'm kinda surprised. We used to have Two Great Lands, but they eliminated the name, back in 2008/2009 and converted them, into Super-Targets. I didn't think there we're anymore greatlands left.

Yup, Target had nine bottles. Thanks for the tip.
I am left with an overwhelming feeling that Cheer ain't long for the Chicago market.
Oh well, I have Cheer at this moment so it makes me... CHEER-FULL..
Even so, I do find this topic interesting. I wonder what is going on with this brand?

The Kroger I shop at has restocked the unscented 100 oz. bottles of Cheer, so they're back to normal.

I live in Canada and have been using Cheer powder for a number of years. I noticed it was getting harder to find. I called the toll free number on the Cheer box and was advised the powder version has been discontinued as of the end of February. Yesterday I was at a local Target store and noticed the new bottles of Cheer have a plastic band around the cap advising of lower pricing on Cheer.

Ah, sorry to hear that. That explains why I haven't seen the powder for some time.

Hadn't used it in in years, though.

The old paradigms are being washed away.
