hi all!!!

i have a question.....

well, i finally got around to removing the agitator on my GA208 tonight. i had tried before and i couldn't get it to budge at all!!! so, i finally filled the 2 biggest pots we have, with water and put them on the stove to boil. i did this twice and got the washer about 1/2 full of the boiling water. then, i turned the washer on for the full 10 minute regular wash cycle, but i put it on "GENTLE" agitation so that the water would stay above that inner solid piece of the agitator.

once the wash cycle was over the washer drained, like it's supposed to and once the tub was empty, i figured, i'd stop the spinning cuz i didn't want the agitator to cool off. so once the washer stopped spinning, i grabbed the bottom sides of the agitator and pulled up. and guess what!!??

it came up with a slight "POP". but boy was it dirty on & all around the agitator shaft!!! it was like caked on, baked on mud. i got a scrubber and scrubbed the inner tub, around the agitator shaft and got most of what i could off of the agitator shaft.

sorry for the long message but here comes my question....

for now, i've put the replacement agitator onto the shaft and pushed it down & heard that slight "POP" when it went down all the way. but my question is;
should i put something like a lubrication on the ribbed metal agitator shaft??

i kinda remember reading in a thread that you could use vaseline on the agitator shaft. is this correct? or do i have to go to the store (walmart or ???) and buy a special kind of lubrication?? or do i NOT need to lubricate the agitator shaft???

thank you all in advance for your replies & advice. i look forward to hearing from you all that are in the "know", of these things.

;o)

this is the new but used agitator that i bought a while back, from anthony, a member who was selling an A107 (if i remember correctly?).

notice the difference of the top edge on this replacement agitator compared to the old agitator that was originally on my GA208?
what a difference, huh!!??!!

Christina,

Vaseline will work. Put a lite coating over the shaft and down over the stop ring. See if you can spin the stop ring and try to work some of the Vaseline underneath it to help stop the rust. In three or four months, depending on how often you wash, pull the agitator off again, wipe off the drive shaft and splined hole in the agitator and reapply the Vaseline again. If it's rusty, like you said, more of the rust will be working loose and the Vaseline will get dirty again. After it gets cleaner you won't have to do that but once every couple of years.

Christina,
I would guess that perhaps the previous owner of your machine may have attempted different ways to get the agitator out. The ending result is how the top of the agitator ended up looking. Whether or not they were successful ---who knows.
What matters is that you were successful in getting it out to replace it.
Congratulations to you.

Rick

You gotta admire persistence in a Lady! Good job! Brian nailed it on advise. Check that rubber stopper ring. It shouldn't be all dried out and ROCK hard. If it is, then it might need to be replaced. They are still quite obtainable.

Proud of you, girl!

beekeyknee/brian:

thank you for your reply & letting me know that i can indeed use vaseline to lubricate the agitator shaft. and also for letting me know about the "stop ring". unfortunately, i don't know exactly what that is or what it looks like? i've tried to google an image for it, but i don't find anything that looks like the images i've found so far? i hope i don't sound dumb here, but i don't think this one has a stop ring?

here are some pictures to show you what i'm left with. i don't know how to use the computer to make red lines on the pictures to point to areas in the picture?? so please bare with me, i'm not that "HIP" to modern technology (or mechanics) obviously. LOL....
hm hm hm......

i've tapped on different parts of the agitator with my fingernail to see if i can feel something that might be rubber or something. but the parts i am tapping with my fingernail, they all feel like hard hollow parts?? maybe i'm doing something wrong or not looking in the right place??? i even looked inside both of the agitators to see if maybe that stop ring is stuck inside the agitator hole underneath, but i don't see anything rubber in there??
(BOY, i probably sure do sound dumb right now and giving you all a good laugh!!!)
LOL.....
:o)

here's the pictures....

the agitator shaft pics...

i know it still looks pretty crusty/crudy, but the only things i had to clean this off with was a yellow & green, scrubber/sponge (for washing dishes), a stiffer dentures toothbrush, and a regular toothbrush. i also used a steel scrubber but pieces kept breaking off and i didn't want too many of the pieces to fall into the inner tub's drain holes, for fear that the pieces would harm the drain pump or something.

the upside down cone shaped thing i tapped on with my fingernail felt hard & hollow. so did the piece on top of that, with the 4 dips on the edge of it (i think that is the part you use that wierd looking tool on to take that part off by unscrewing it {sorry i don't know the names?}). and also that black part on top of that piece, it felt like it was hard & hollow too. the part that sits on top of the one with the dips in it. all that felt hard & hollow when i tapped them with my fingernail.

if i'm doing something wrong, let me know. LOL.....

thank you so much.
and sorry for the pictures if they aren't very clear.

although, i'm sure some of my simplest questions must give you guys such a good laugh & you must get a real "kick" out of my naive (but learning) mind!!!
hm hm hm.......

Christina,

Stop ring identified.

P/N 015494.  I bought three a year ago from AppliancePartsPros.com.  They were $4.83 each at the time.

thank you soooooo much!!!
for pointing out the stop ring on the agitator shaft!!! i thought that was just part of the shaft. but now that i know where to look and i grab the agitator shaft with my fingers and run my fingers down the shaft, i can feel the difference in the texture and i feel the "rubbery" feeling of the stop ring now.

again, thank you so much for pointing it out to me.
GOSH! i feel so dumb!!!
LOL....

you gave me a chuckle

;o)

i did get the agitator shaft lubed up and then i pulled off as much of the vaseline off that i could, to make sure it had the minimalist amount of vaseline on it. cuz i always tend to put "more than less". and i just want to make sure i don't put too much vaseline on there.

and i did get a chance to rub the vaseline on the stop ring too but i couldn't get it turn twist around the agitator shaft. so i don't think i got very much under the stop ring.

but i even scrub the inner hole of the underside of the agitator with a toothbrush and got that pretty clean. not as clean as brand new but i did get alot of the dirt/gunk out of the grooves.

i want to be sure that everything is dry before i put the agitator back on to the shaft. which will probably be in a few hours, later on tonight.

thank you guys so much for all your help!!!!

lots of love,
christina ;o)
