Wanted to get the old Maytag out of the detached garage (aka SHED) and inside in the bathroom, but then realized the door was too narrow. So instead of having to install a wider door, I got a really good deal on a Haier 1.46 cu ft. portable washer on ebay- way below Walmart cost.
So here it is going into the slot where a long counter with a double sink once stood. As I live alone, I just need the other one sink- The water heater will also soon circumvent the old one- also out in the shed- which I'll still be able to turn on and use with the old full sized machines for large items. So all the hot plumbing will be within about six feet of the new water hearter soon. The Haier below is meanwhile hooked to the old line, and a laundry faucet I've put on a makeshift stand eliminates any need for any leaky hose adapter to the faucet, and allows me more temperature control to the one top hose inlet on the machine. The discharge hose goes neatly down into the old sink drain piping. I'm jazzed! |

Don't know how detached your shed is but you may want to consider putting a trap on that sink drain. If it's connected to any type of septic or sewer drain line you'll get the smells from it with no trap there to prevent it from doing that. |

I've used it a half dozen times now- most of the time fairly filling it- it has four water levels, and of course the laundry tap controls the temp-
but tonight I just had six or eight pairs of socks a half dozen underwear, a tee shirt and a couple of wash cloths- so I used the second lowest water setting- about half the tub full, and the quick wash setting- looks like it only suses a bucketfull of water that way, and done in no time- for as little as I paid for it- and got rock bottom on e-bay- $212 I think it was shipped- I'm lovin this! and I can still use the larger Maytag out in the garage for big stuff- but it's not seeing much use these days! |

After seeing this old thread, I realized it's been a year now. In that time the little Haier has seen lots of use, but with no troubles and REALLY convenient. I have that Kenmore space saver dryer I converted to 120v power in the bathroom too, and all last winter used this combo almost exclusively rather than schlepp outside to the shed.
I've been tempted to get a larger portable machine- looks as if the 2.0 cubic feet models will still clearly fit through the door, the 2.5 cubic foot models are "iffy"- and the Maytag in the shed outside has seen some problems- running fine now, but have to get the case back on securely after replacing the timer. If I got a new larger portable, Id put this Haier out in the shed then and scrap the Maytag. The 220 dryer out there is still the clearly faster dryer though. It's just a bit of a hassle taking the laundry out to the shed now, but I make the effort more in the warm months, to reduce the usage of the Haier. The little Haier serves all my needs except for perhaps my heaviest blankets. For someone who lives alone or a couple starting out I highly recommend- it moves through it's cycles and has more adjustments in time and water usage than the old Maytag, and my set-up gives me easy control over wash temp. For the time being I'm just trying to be happy with what I have- I'm definitely covered on laundry! There's been the exact pair I use on craigslist here for a few weeks- the Haier 23 1.5 model and a Whirlpool space saver 110 dryer, for only $200 for the set if anyone's interested CLICK HERE TO GO TO harpon's LINK on Jacksonville Craigslist |
